Steele Campaign In Trouble

7:20 pm EST October 25th, 2006 | Democrats, Republicans | 3 Comments

The Michael Steele campaign just sent out an email promoting a new ad Steele is running – with his mom. What’s intriguing about the email is that in order to make it seem as if his campaign is on a run, Steele touts the results of a new poll.

The problem is:

1. It is a Republican poll
2. It has a margin of error of 3.9%
3. It still shows Steele losing to Ben Cardin (41% to 39%)

When you’re own internal Republican poll still shows you losing and that’s the best bit of opinion data you’ve got to offer in a state where you are outnumbered in party identification by 2 to 1, it is time to stick the fork in.

Even funnier, in a debate today Steele admitted that he would have voted for the Iraq War (Ben Cardin voted against it), and he tried to pull a “gotcha” on Cardin by asking him about the Metro subway system.

What in the name of Jesus has the Metro got to do with running for the United States senate?

Enlighten me a minute OW, as I don’t follow maryland politics very well.

As you have explained, Maryland is a solid democratic state. Nobody likes GWB. Steele is some sort of an uncle tom black republican.

Why is steele within the margin of error of beating cardin?

  2. He is at best within 7 points, likely its further apart. His poll is fixed garbage that has him losing – that’s the point.

Actually the average among all polls is 5 1/2 points down for Steele which is about half of what it was a month ago.

And Oliver doesn’t use phrases like “Uncle Tom” because it hits too close to home. (Not in the way you think I mean it- I would guess that he himself has been called an Uncle Tom more than a few times in his life by fellow black people who didn’t appreciate his speech patterns and use of the language.) He’ll use other racial epithets, but I don’t recall him ever using that one. (I certainly could be wrong.)

But I digress. The trend is in Steele’s direction, but I don’t know that he can overcome the Maryland 2-1 Democrat ratio. But hey- this is a Democrat seat to lose, so I keep rooting for Mr. Steele.
