Dear Coach Gibbs, Please Bench Mark Brunell
Tweet
Seriously, I know the coach and Brunell share beliefs and church, but what kind of pictures as blackmail could Brunell possibly have to keep Coach Gibbs under his thumb like this? The team has certainly devolved from where it was last year (especially on defense) but you literally have no shot at winning when your quarterback is wheezing like a geezer from a piddling 3 yard pass and anything he does over 10 yards looks like a nice tasty interception to the opposing team.

It’s not the QB, it’s the system. Wrong system for the available players.
Expect an overhaul of the offense during the bye.
I have very little faith in your prognostications either for the Skins or Dems
Well considering my track record with the Skins, things probably bode well for the Dems. The system can only matter so much. All systems require the QB to do a semi-decent job of throwing the ball.
Please, worse than The Gunslinger?? No way Jose’.
Oliver the genius of the Gibbs system was that quarterbacks were not pivotal which is why he won with three different quarterbacks.
Quarterbacks in the Gibbs system are there to manage the game plan and not make mistakes.
Look to the past and learn.
Wasn’t it just a few weeks ago that Mr Brunell set an NFL record for consecutive completions?
I watched today’s game, and the problem wasn’t Mark Brunell, it was the plays that were called. Several times on third down, the play called for a pass that was less than the needed yardage for a first down, with the (vain) expectation that the receiver would make the required yardage after the catch.
And nobody was worse than Heath Shuler! Heck, Heath Shuler made Ryan Leaf look good!
Yes, but Brunell is not even a competent manager. The blame is not right on his shoulders, but the play of the QB is central to winning the game. I’m not expecting Peyton Manning, though I would love to see someone half as good as him in the burgundy and gold, but The Gimp is no good either.
Brunell set the “record” (with 5yd passes) versus the Texans.
I could set a few record versus the Texans, and I’m not even a very good Madden ’07 QB.
I hope big old Snyder Lips is having a good time. Super payroll, bad has-been and never-was players and a coach whose time passed a very long time ago. Remember the Ditka years in New Orleans? I didn’t even know DC had that old Ricky Williams spirit in them.
i’m not sure oliver actually watched the game yesterday or even understands the game of football in general. the play of the QB is NOT central to winning the game. The defense has to not give up 400+ yards. be a reactionary “fan” if you want, but brunell is not the problem with the redskins. i guess it just makes you feel better being able to blame an individual.
The Redskins have a lot more problems than just a quarterback. Even having Peyton Manning wouldn’t turn them into a contender.
Their defense is horrible. Peyton Manning burned them for 342 yards. They gave up another 100+ on the ground. You can’t give up almost 450 yards on defense and expect to win.
The Baltimore Ravens won the Super Bowl with Trent Dilfer. It is not all about the QB.
If Oliver could break that record against the Texans, why doesn’t every QB break that record every week ? That is a patently ridiculous argument to make, Oliver.
By the way, the Texans are a considerably better team than the Titans, whom your Skins lost to at home, last week.
How difficult is it to understand that Brunell was not at fault for this loss ? The offensive line allowed the Colts defense, average at best, to put pressure on Brunell all day long, and at the same time, hold Portis to less than 50 yards rushing. This game was won, and lost, at the line of scrimmage.
It certainly did not help the Skins by allowing Peyton to walk up and down the field on offense, at will.
Like I said in the entry, the defense was horrendous (though, let’s be honest, how many defenses have been able to stuff Peyton Manning?). But even on a bad team you must have reasonable play from your quarterback in order to possibly pull out a win. It is your shot at coming back from being beaten. With Brunell the Skins simply have no shot.
It’s possible that it’s just rearranging deck chairs but there isn’t much you can do to rejigger the offense and defense at this point, it just involves too much personell. But you could make a change at QB and try and get a decent player leading the team.
Son, you and George Bush have the same disease.
When shown overwhelming facts that don’t agree with your opinion, you dismiss the facts.
Not a good way to live your life.
I agree with the others here. It wasn’t Brunell’s fault this time (last week I thought he still had a chance to win until he threw the Hail Mary with 1:08 left). The offensive line is critical to a QB’s success; he can’t get it done if he’s always running for his life, unless he’s Michael Vick and running is how he gets it done. Brunell isn’t Michael Vick, and he needs protection. He’s a fine QB but he’s lost a step. Vinny Testaverde was the same way here in Dallas; if he had time to survey the field he was great, if he had to run he was terrible. Bledsoe is doing good this year because the line is giving him time; if he gets any kind of pressure on him he’s toast.
Remember that Gibbs’ best years were when he had the Hogs going good.
As far as the defense giving up 400+ yards, when facing Peyton Manning that’s going to happen unless your team totally sells out for defense, like Baltimore. If you notice, he rarely gets sacked, and he’s not a great runner so it obviously is because of the protection around him.
Wait, you had a bad player called “Weurfful”?
Now there’s someone with only one destiny.
Danny Wuerffel was another highly-touted college QB who couldn’t hack it in the NFL; he did great at Florida in Steve Spurrier’s system (at a premier football school with the best talent available) but face-planted at the next level. Just goes to show the relative talent levels between Division 1-A and the pros. When everyone’s an All-Star, the merely good are below average.
