Dean Puts The Chips On Blue

I’m thinking that this is pretty significant.

The DSCC’s optimism about winning the Senate is apparently contagious as the DNC is going to pony up an extra $5-10M for the Senate committee, according to sources familiar with the previously reported arrangement between the two campaign orgs.

While the DNC doesn’t have $10M to just toss around to another campaign committee, the DNC apparently has decided to go into debt to come up with the extra cash DSCC Chair Chuck Schumer has been pleading for from DNC Chair Howard Dean. The actual amount of the loan the DNC is taking out is not known as the committee holds out hope they can raise nearly everything they need before the election. But a line of credit has been opened.

And as John Aravosis and Josh Marshall point out – the remote possibility of the Democrats picking up control over one or both sides of congress is happening for the first time in decades (the first time in my adult life, that’s for sure). The probable Democratic candidates sitting on money for their PACs or token re-election campaigns would do well to drop some cash in service of helping their party. It’s not a must-do, but certainly a gold star that will be remembered when the ’08 races start (which is pretty soon, probably Spring ’07).

What would a Democratic House mean? The right is trying to scare people with talk of “Speaker Pelosi” and her San Franscico Liberalism (Booga-booga-boooh!) but it isn’t working. Sean Hannity, robotic trooper that he is, tried it on Hannity & Colmes today but it was so lame even the tepid Alan Colmes had to laugh it off. Harold Meyerson writes about what would get passed in the House should Democrats gain control:

In the House, the Democrats have made clear that there’s a first tier of legislation they mean to bring to a vote almost immediately after the new Congress convenes. It includes raising the minimum wage, repealing the Medicare legislation that forbids the government from negotiating with drug companies for lower prices, replenishing student loan programs, funding stem cell research and implementing those recommendations of the Sept. 11 commission that have thus far languished.

If a Democratic House passes that, a Democratic Senate will too – and if Bush vetoes it (like he vetoed stem cell research, his sole veto over his entire presidency), well quite honestly, that is a great argument for a Democratic President.

  1. What with Diebold, the hugeass Right Wing Noise Machine, a tremendous cash advantage, and what have you, I can’t get my hopes up.

Decades? Prior to 1995, there was a 6 year stretch (80-86) where the GOP controlled the Senate. Otherwise it was Democrats who were in control for decades.

Isn’t it ironic how the Big Dems are now following Dean’s lead after all the bitching when he was appointed head of the DNC?

One of the few Dems with balls implemented his 50 State Strategy and now they have a legitimate shot at winning both houses.

But like the first commenter said, Diebold has other ideas…

    Just curious, Ian.

Sounds like desperation to me! One last-ditch effort to try and win either house of Congress. It’s not going to happen, much to the chagrin of Dean, Iran and N Korea.

  8. Nimrod Gently says:

Iran and North Korea don’t give a bald fuck which party controls congress or the senate, and to imply that they do is not only dishonest, it’s ridiculously tasteless.

  9. Meatloaf says:

    So the left has Soros.

The right has Murdoch, Mellon-Scaife, the Carlyle Group, etc…

Don’t worry righties, you’e still got more folks funding your machines than the left could ever hope to have.

Man, after all this Bushit I could really GO for some San Francisco liberalism.
