The Truth #1

Conservatives freak out over Google-Youtube; It’s always Clinton’s fault; Border fence follies; Democrats might “go too far”; Matt Drudge is not a reporter; Neckties & me; Superman on DVD; Republican pedophiles; Mark Foley and other Republican scandals; David Horowitz’s “Shadow Party”; “The Departed”

    Lights!!

  2. Jay says:

    Not bad.

    A few suggestions:

    1. Better lighting. There’s too many shadows and the reflection from your screen is creating these little pinpoints of light on your eyes that is distracting.

    2. You’ll need to back up a little if you’re going to be getting your hands on the camera. The problem is, you see them, then you don’t and because the camera has a wide angle, when they get into the frame, they look bigger than your head.

    3. I know it’s the first one, but plan out a little better what you’re going to say. A few times you were looking up and to the left, obviously searching for something to say. It’s almost like a speech. You have to practice it a few times first.

Other than that it was good for a first effort. Though the only truth I heard was ‘The Departed’ being a great movie. :-)

  3. greylocks says:

Great stuff. I’m laughing so hard I’m carying. Do some more.

And I like the amateur look.

  4. frameone says:

Um, Jay? Can I assume now that you’re done with the “debate”?

  5. Yeah, I’m still confused on the lighting thing. I have almost every light in my apt focused on my face. Maybe I have some sort of superpower that prevents me from showing up on film?

  6. Jay says:

    Frame, I responded.

  7. Ian says:

    (1) What is this thing with Matt Drudge and conservatives believe what he said? Before your whine on Drudge, you criticized Malkin. Oliver, do you even read Malkin or do you just shout out baseless attacks? Malkin, along with HotAir, has criticized Drudge many of time, including his recent Foley page story. Please name me several respectable conservative bloggers and/or columnists who have reported AND defended Drudge’s “report”. Don’t think you can.

    (2) Always Clinton’s fault? How about always Bush’s fault. Dem strategists on TV say Bush 41 allowed NK to develop some nukes, then magically there were 0 when Clinton was in power, and when Bush 43 took over, several magically appeared.

    (3) David Horowitz? Are you kidding me? Who is defending Horowitz? Am I the only one who sees through your blanket accusations.

    (4) Have you seen Republican voters discontent with the current majority? Of course you have, because you post poll numbers constantly. Now how can you do that and then complain about Republican support for Republicans? Just don’t make no sense.

  8. frameone says:

    “Frame, I responded.”

    And I’ve requested a clarification …

  9. Marty says:

I agree with Jay- not bad for a first effort, but try to pick a topic and actually stick with it for more than a few seconds. Make claim, back it up with some analaysis, start again with your next video. Otherwise it comes off as just throwing up everything that’s on your mind on everybody’s pants.

As for the content- it’s a laundry list of all your posts, so we can all comment on them there.

OH- a couple more things- you may want to find a better stop point- like one with your mouth closed. The screen shot prior to hitting play is less than flattering.

As for the lighting- go to Home depot and buy a 500 watt halogen shop light and a stand. (it might cost you $30.00) If it’s too bright, hang a white sheet in front of it. (you’ll have to experiment with it, but it will help.)

  10. Excellent post. Great mix of humor and information. Look forward to seeing more.

On a side note, as you as you said 14-disc I knew you were going to talk about the Superman DVD box set. Tell you what, I’ll buy you that one if you buy me the Monthy Python Megaset. I’ve been meaning to pick it up for years, but I just can’t bring myself to shelling out $200 at once.

  11. 1. I read Malkin every day, hence I know exactly what she’s all about. I’m sure you’ll see she historically has been more pro-Drudge than anti.

    2. Clinton and Bush I engaged in diplomcy, Bush II has – and is – acted like a child.

    3. Horowitz is continually cited by the right as some deep source of knowledge, using his fact-free smears of the left.

    4. Republican voters are upset at the majority for not being crazy enough, and if you look at the polling they still support Bush and his policies. It is the moderates/independents who have left Bush & Co. behind.

I’ve got no control over the thumbnail, my mouth is big enough without it being such a gaping maw.

I really don’t feel like doing one long extended rant on one subject. I’m probably a little too ADD to do that unless I get really worked up about something.

But thanks for the mostly constructive criticism.

  12. Nimrod Gently says:

Wait, they’re releasing ALL the Superman movies? Even three and four? I thought the WB\DC Ministry of Truth had buried those.

  13. Marty says:

Maybe you should solicit some tips from Bethany on the screen shot thing. (O.K. I admit- you’re never going to look that good even if she had her mouth open with seven chewed up Reeses peanut butter cups in it, but you get the point.)

  14. MM says:

I suggest you take a trip down to one of the border-towns to get a first-hand feel of how huge this problem is.

Trust me. I lived it. It’s a friggin mess.

  15. Robbie says:

Oliver, thank you for bringing us the truth. You are already doing better than Altas Shrugs and you will only get better at this.

I do outdoor photography, so the first thing I thought of was a three-piece studio lighting equipment set. That and a suitable background would take care of the lighting issues. A set would cost about $250, so check if David Brock can spring for it. :-)

Even if you can’t get a full-blown lighting set, visit a reputable camera store that specializes in indoor or portrait photography. They will steer you in the right direction.

As for other issues, I live in San Diego County and immigration is no bigger a problem now than it was during Bush 41′s reign of error. If we build a fence, they will continute to tunnel underneath it. That’s why building it would be a tremendous waste of taxpayer’s money.

Keep up the good work, Oliver. I’ll post your YouTube clip on my site so you can get more readers to tune in.

  16. Rounds77 says:

This has always been one of my favorite blogs because of the cast of characters who debate here. The “truth” video adds a unique touch of enhancement. Keep it up Oliver!

  17. Ian says:

First off, why are you not embedding the YouTube version? You can get views that way to build up your audience. Revver, pfft.

    (1) First off, I am no mouthpiece for anyone. You obviously do not read Malkin because she did not take kindly to Drudge’s headline last week claiming pages ‘lead on’ Foley. She wrote a post about it, since you read Malkin, apparently, I don’t think I have to link to it.

    (2) No doubt Bush hasn’t done much about NoKo. He most surely could have done more. I am no Bush apologist, but I am assuming 9/11, GWOT, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, liberal hate, etc has kept his plate full. You didn’t address my remark about the magically dis/appearing nuclear weapons in the Bush/Clenis/Bush admins.

    (3) Straw man. Show me where one person on the right has agreed with him on everything. Do not name Ann Coulter. I’m sure conservatives agree with him on some points, but not his far-right opinions.

    (4) No, Republicans are made at the majority for acting like a minority. Inaction on their part does not mean we want them farther to the right, we just want them to live up on their election promises.

  18. JK says:

    Good stuff, OW.

Thanks for being the liberal bombthrower you are, and for giving this castaway a nice place to hang. (Other than those times when you are bashing the Democrats.)

ESPN does this thing…where they spend 30 seconds on each topic. That’s about the attention span of the average American. I like your strategy of ranting on multiple topics.

    JK

  19. Diamond LeGrande says:

Oliver, thank you for bringing us the truth. You are already doing better than Altas Shrugs and you will only get better at this.

Good grief, I watched the one where she had that song and dance for Arab terrorists. I kept wondering what a member of her intended audience would think if he saw it, how insane he would think she is.

  20. TEScott says:

    That was real good, Oliver.

  21. Snoop says:

Glad I read the comments cause Jay basically dittoed my thoughts.
Good attempt at the video blogging thing. But speaking as a videographer you need to get a cute sidekick for a more appealing visual effect. Having said that the bad lighting did not bother me as much.
You know how us conservatives are chauvinistic sex crazed individuals.
Why else would we listen to Malkin?
