There's nothing wrong with sitting down one-on-one with North Korea besides stupid pride. A mushroom cloud or George Bush feeling like a macho man? I'll take the former.

Yes, I think the economic policies of President Clinton had an effect on the economy. You cut taxes for the middle class in a broad way and people have money to invest and hire. As opposed to waiting for it to trickle down on the great unwashed.

Bush's military actions have both been failures. Afghanistan is a drug runner's paradise and Iraq is in civil war. He also presided over the worst terrorist attack in US history. Amazing how that gets glossed over.

The Democrats want to end the corporate welfare and the giveaway to the megarich. Some, like me, also want to fine tune our government's programs and make long term investments in energy security that will save us money and lives in the long run.

Amazing how that works.

First of all, we ARE talking with Iran and N. Korea...when we can. the Norks won't sit down at the table unless they can call the shots and do it one-on-one...which we tried (see clenis and madeline halfbright) and it didn't work. The UN is working with Iran as well, and they continue to thumb their noses at us and the UN...So your plan is to keep talking...unless we absolutely have to..talk some more?

Do you really want us to return to the halcyon days of the frothy tech bubble Oliver? You think that was a good economic thing? More importantly, you think it had one thing to do with Clinton? Really? Maybe to the effect that the democrats had the whole country believing that wishes could come true and you could get something for nothing...

Bush has been in office for two military actions libertating two countries and following the largest attack on american soil in history...and yet, growth is strong, wages are strong, the market is strong. Now I won't argue that the republicans are spending too much, I agree. But a huge chunk of that spending is on liberal social programs! Are you saying the democrats want that to stop?

It is supremely ironic that the democrats use the term "reality based" and then say things like
"In November of 2000 we had a surplus, now we have a multibillion dollar deficit - the only change has been from a D to an R in the White House."

uh, yea.....

If you ask people if they want todays economy or the Clinton economy, most sane folks would take the Clinton economy, which was an across the board boom - led by the tech sector. You guys are applauding Bush yet the Dow is essentially right where he came in. Wages are stagnant, unemployment's only down because people are taking lower-paying jobs. Its certainly not as bad as the Reagan-Bush I economy, but it isn't the Clinton economy either.

"...the only change has been from a D to an R in the White House."

Really, Oliver? Nothing else has happened?

(I know- that's your campaign slogan, but seriously...)

My favorite in this bunch is this...

"GOP Don't tax rich people.
DEM Don't tax poor people."

When almost 90% of tax revenues come from the top 50% of earners. By the way- we don't tax poor people- unless you think that they shouldn't even have to contribute to their own future retirement/social security (payroll tax) which of course, according to the followers of Oliver, is in now crisis. (*cough* ponzi scheme *cough*)

I suppose the economy isn't really a topic you want to get too much play right now- most of the numbers look too good for your liking.

Jobs, wages, tax revenues, unemployment, stock market (on principals this time, not just tech and web speculators), oil prices, inflation, interest rates, job market, and even the promised deficit reduction (in half the time it was predicted.) Yeah- spending is the big achilles heel, but I really don't believe that you think the Democrats would spend less. Do you? It took a Republican Congress to keep Clinton in check. (I only wish they would have kept themselves in check better- but earmark reform should help some.)

I know- you can always find something negative if you scrape enough, but it's pretty tough right now. Most of what you have been whining about has pretty much turned around. But I know- you want to change direction on the economy too. (Even if it is going in the right direction.)

"GWB will at least make a first guess and do something, as compared with the democrats who won't do anything..."

The problem is that Bush's "first guess" has fucked things up so bad that the only option is to leave Iraq. Why do you think that's not a plan?

Pedro, you did exactly what I said you would. You don't hear me saying Republicans don't have any plans. They do. They just happen to all be really bad. If you disagree with Democratic ideas, say so, but acting like a two year old with your thumbs stuck in your ears saying "I can't hear you" is not a strategy. It's just bluster, as you say.

We aren't talking to North Korea, we're saying one thing and talking another with Iran, and Iraq is an unmitigated disaster which gets worse every day. I will state there is no Republican plan for Iran beyond repeating "Victory!!!" a million times without defining what in God's name that is.

With regards to the economy, the top of the crust is doing fine, but the middle and lower classes have not seen their situation change appreciably, certainly not like how they did under the last Democratic presidency when everyone's boat rose with the tide. Whatever (unlikely) increases in government income due to the tax cuts has been completely offset by the insane spending by the Republican government. In November of 2000 we had a surplus, now we have a multibillion dollar deficit - the only change has been from a D to an R in the White House.

Thanks for making my point about a lack of ideas G-H.

To quote dennis miller...

"To have a second guesser, you have to have a first guesser. GWB will at least make a first guess and do something, as compared with the democrats who won't do anything..."

So for the love of god, show me a democratic IDEA...currently you accuse me of "not liking" something that has never been seen....

There is nothing more amusing than watching the Bush-worshippers writhing and drowning in a sewage pit that the GOP ordered them to dig, now desperately, hopelessly begging for a plan. "A PLAN! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PLEASE GIVE US A PLAN!"

Your responses indicate why the democrats will have a hard time winning even this year.

You. Have. No. Ideas.

Your idea basis has the complexity of a four year old. We are engaging in diplomacy in Iran and N. Korea...face-to-face (x 3 in the case of the NORKS)..., no change with democrats

You are afraid to state your the democrats position on taxes (raise them), cause you know THAT is a loser. The Bush tax cuts have led to higher government income than anytime in history, while at the same time continuing the growth at a respectable rate.

You are afraid to state the democrats energy policy as well (start a "think tank"), because it is no policy, and doesn't come close to addressing the near-term concerns.

You guys are simply bluster, no ideas.

So now that your democrat "ideas" have been thoroughly Fisked, ready to admit that you are a party without them?

Iraq: get out, redploy in the region, finish the job in Afghanistan

Iran: engage in diplomacy

North Korea: face to face diplomacy

The idea that we "lose face" by sitting across the table from a dictator kind of pales in comparison to a nuclear war.

And before you retort, you simply disagreeing with a position doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Didn't think I would have to explain something so basic, but we're dealing with conservatives here.

So DrPedo, even in your narrow world you narrow the choices to failed ideas or no ideas and consistently vote for the failures.

GOP Iraq- incompetent failure forever.
Dem Iraq- change to competent redeployment and eventual withdrawal

GOP Iran- not US problem to cover for incompetent diplomacy
DEM Iran- diplomacy

GOP NKorea- not US problem to cover for incompetent diplomacy.
DEM NKorea- diplomacy

GOP Tax Structure- don't tax rich people.
DEM tax structure- don't tax poor people.

GOP Energy- energy companies write policy.
DEM Energy- conservation, alternative energy.

Hard to choose there. You left out family values

GOP Family values traditional- gay bash. This year: enable pedophiles
DEM Family values- gays are people, pedophiles are criminals.

Tough choices this year. We incompetence, failure, class warfare, corruption and enabling pedophiles vs. competence, diplomacy, protect the workers, energy independence and anti-pedophile.

GOP Tax Structure- don’t tax rich people.
DEM tax structure- don’t tax poor people.

On Iraq: repudiate the incompetent, ideologically paralyzed and willfully blind failures.

On Iran: repudiate the incompetent, ideologically paralyzed and willfully blind failures.

On N. Korea: repudiate the incompetent, ideologically willfully blind failures.

Only by digging out and burning the entire rotten GOP apparatus, root and branch, can we hope to turn things around. Unfortunately, we can't vote Bush out in this election; for now all we can do is elect a Congress with balls, to actually curb and investigate the extreme and ongoing failures of the radical Bush administration.

Well lets start with the top three oliver

What is the democratic plan for:

Iraq, Iran Korea?

The current tax structure

Energy

Since you obviously believe the demo's have the right answers...what are they?

What ideas, pedro? Honestly, what effing ideas? I'm sick and tired of the "no ideas" mantra. Just because you don't agree with the ideas doesn't mean there are no ideas. Jesus.

Worry less about strategy, and more about actually coming up with workable ideas.

The republicans whip the democrats like a bad habit in the idea department...unfortunately they haven't actually FOLLOWED THROUGH with those ideas...leading to their inevitable demise in November...followed by two years of watching the democrats running around stepping on their cranks....

I for one am looking forward to it...
