"I mean the mere use of the word doesn't automatically connote the person is evil, a racist or any such thing, correct?"

Like uttering "Bring 'em on!" had "unintended consequences" that The Decider, uh, The President of the United States of America merely hadn't thought of in the moment?

Saying that word doesn't make Allen a racist necessarily.

But then again there's the macaca comment.
And the noose.
And the confederate flag.
And voting against MLK day.
And the "welcome to America comment"
And opposing 1991 Civil Rights Act

It's what's called "preponderance of evidence".

Sure, George Allen was probably just rapping along to Old Dirty Bastard. Or maybe he was reciting his favorite Richard Pryor routine. Context, people!

Saying the word "Nigger" doesnt make him racist necessarily, of course. But arguably the fact that he refuses to address the growing issue of his racism directly by saying, for instance "Look, okay, I was, and there is nothing I more regret in my entire life than the misconceptions I had in my developing years about an entire race of people based on my own ignorance, and the things I may have said or done to them" or even by denying these actions outright shows... well honestly I dont know what. If it were me, I would have fessed up to being an idiot a few decades ago at this point and not be trying to deny the incident ever happened, especially after using the french word for "nigger" to refer to a dark skinned citizen of the state and telling him "welcome to america," actions which, in this ever developing context, suggest more and more loudly that, in fact, he was and indeed still is a racist.
Now maybe he's not, and maybe hae has some other reason for behaving so utterly stupidly. I cant imagine its a good one though. What say you?

I know you hate Allen because he a republican and ina contested state, but you admit there could be extenuating circumstances, right, if he did use the word? I mean the mere use of the word doesn't automatically connote the person is evil, a racist or any such thing, correct?
