Discontent Among the Rube Vote

I don’t doubt that the religious far right will remain solidly in the Republican corner, but you have to wonder if they’ll keep turning out to vote when the day after an election the Republicans tell them to shut up because they’re too crazy.

“We put these people in power in 2004,” said Sue Means, a home-school activist from suburban Pittsburgh. “I really expected more. I’m disappointed.”

Means sees little but broken promises from the Republican Congress: the failed federal marriage amendment, perceived waffling on stem-cell research, no new limits on abortion. She’s far from alone among like-minded people many credited in 2004 with helping pass same-sex marriage bans in 11 states and being key to President Bush’s re-election.

“There are a lot of people that are somewhat disillusioned and have a feeling of betrayal for having worked so hard and have Republicans be so unresponsive,” James Dobson, chairman of Focus on the Family, said last week. “How that will play out, I really don’t know.”

Hey dummies, the GOP is never going to push on those issues because they need to get you yokels whipped up to get out the vote. But then, for 20+ years you guys have done their able bidding and have a demonstrable inability to think on your own, so you’ll probably be snookered again.

You know. If I had said the same thing about the black vote or the gay vote I’d immediately be labeled a bigot.

  2. Except Dems have repeatedly pushed on issues relating to blacks and gay Americans.

  3. Liberals won on civil rights. Now black people living in the South can vote and be in the same schools as whites, against the wishes of conservatives. Liberals have been winning on gay issues, too. Gay marriage will be here within a decade, I predict.

Please be aware that these folks have their own universe of reality supported by separate institutions such as schools, instructional literature, seminars, workshops, and uncredentialed certifications for such things as counseling, teaching, etc. It is part of a huge money making scam with political propaganda as a side benefit for the Republican Party. The organizations and institutions associated with the Dobson crowd and his henchmen are unregulated, usually exempt from any oversight, and everyday in every way get away with fraud on a massive scale.

If Dobson is unhappy, he is free in this country to start his own political party. In fact, I encourage him to do so. He might find out how little power his brand of zealot really has.

Not if you could quote a black voter or a gay voter complaining that the Democratic party has weaseled on their promises.

Conservatives like to paint the world in black and white, right and wrong, with their opinions and beliefs siding on the side of right 100% of the time. Yet history has consistently proven them to be on the side of wrong. After all these years, they still don’t see it. Or maybe they just want to keep the wrong “right” for as long as possible so they can continue feeling superior and powerful. Why worry about bearing a legacy of immorality when you can live blissfully ignorant in the here and now?

I’d gladly label you a bigot even if you didn’t say that, Jay.

    Oh. Ok. Done.

    Thanks.

I will not be too sad to see this voting bloc leave the Republican party. They have absolutely eviscerated the Goldwater wing and have somehow equated religious freedom with increasing government power over personal decisions. I just hope their disillusionment continues.

Jay, you ought to read that article you linked a little more closely.

It says that Dems support the causes important to gay people, but they’re keeping quiet about it.

The Republican voter OW linked to says the GOP talks a big game but doesn’t deliver.

Snark kinda loses its bite when you get the story wrong.

African-Americans and gays know which party has pushed for equal rights.

The religious right just keeps coming back, no matter how many times they get kicked away from the table.

We got something for our efforts, the religious right has gotten, what?

Like the man said, you guys never learn. You just defend the guy what kicked you.
