Hugh Hewitt, 9/17/06

But what George Allen’s in-house blogger communicates is the essence of the reason why Allen will win this race in the end: Virginia is a decidedly conservative state which George Bush carried by a margin of 260,000 votes, 54% to 46%.

So, according to Hewitt and a guy being paid by the Allen campaign, there is no way for a Democrat to win in Virginia.

Reality, 11/9/05

Virginians elected Democrat Timothy M. Kaine yesterday as the state’s next governor, choosing him to continue the centrist legacy of popular Gov. Mark R. Warner (D) and rejecting the Republican candidate for the state’s top job a second time in four years.

Kaine, 47, emerged ahead of his Republican rival, former attorney general Jerry W. Kilgore, 44, who had worked for months to convince voters that Kaine was too liberal for the conservative state. Sen. H. Russell Potts Jr. (R-Winchester), who ran as an independent, trailed far behind the major-party candidates.

Clearly I understand the value of the conservative noise-making apparatus, but guys you aren’t supposed to believe so much of your own propaganda. You’ll end up talking about the “heck of a job” being done.

Then again, considering how well the strategy of screaming “LIBERAL” worked for Jerry Kilgore, please do the same with Jim Webb. We in Maryland would love to have another Democratic senator next door.

Hold the phone here. Hugh Hewitt is accusing Jim Webb, who worked for Ronald Reagan, of closet or proxy (the linked item insinuated both) liberalism? (Yeah, I know, he didn’t say liberal, but it was pretty clearly between the lines.)

If someone who worked for Ronnie Raygun is a liberal, we’re a group of Bolsheviks here.

  2. Dugger says:

“we’re a group of Bolsheviks here.”

Now I wouldn’t say that. Some of you seem distinctly Menshevik to me.

No Oliver, you’ve got it all wrong. Hugh is asserting that Virginia is too heavily populated with bigots for a Dem to succeed.

If I were a Virginian, I’d want to have a private word or two with Mr Hewitt…

  4. Cathy says:

I just moved from Virginia last year and at the time all my republican friends were in the process of becoming democrats, thanks to people like George Allen and Jim Gilmore. One of them called up her uncle, a retired county clerk and asked “Why did we become republicans?” She was reminded of that little event called Massive Resistance. She’s voting for Webb this year, as are many other republicans.

  5. Rheinhard says:

Well Ollie, if the take on the Allen-Webb debate by the Times-Dispatch is correct, I think you’re closer to that goal. Hell, if even Hewitt -approved wingnut Dean Barnett thinks Webb is a force to be reckoned with and would acquit himself well in the Senate, then Mr. Macaca must be shaking in his boots!

The other interesting factoid left out by Hewitt and Felix’s blogger is that Bush’s margin of victory in 2004 was considerably lower than his margin in 2000…thekeez
