Honestly

11:21 pm EST September 17th, 2006 | Sports | 22 Comments

The only explanation is that they’re actively trying to lose. The Mark Brunell of 2004 is back, and he sucks (and why the heck did they hire an expensive-ass offensive coordinator if they weren’t going to actually throw the ball? Santana Moss would be more productive knitting than he was in the game – they never threw him the ball). Blitz Drew Bledsoe, a middling quarterback at the tail end of his career – clearly that’s crazy talk.

Ye Gods, here we go again into Planet Suck.

Please start Jason Campbell or anyone not named Mark Brunell next week. Thanks.

I understand the fixation on the Redskins–I grew up in D.C. and I remember them from before Sonny Jurgenson, when you had to look back to the Sammy Baugh era to even imagine success. No amount of bad seasons could ever reproduce an environment that bleak.

But this is just not the year to suffer vicariously; there are going to be a lot more downs than ups and ups are not guaranteed. I would focus instead on what really counts: hating the Cowboys.

As a Cowboys fan, I thought Saunders, Williams, and Gibbs would overcome any talent issues. (I still am.) The team will click. The question is sooner or later.

33 attempts is a lot. I thought it interesting that Madden referred to last week’s game in which they ran only 17 times and quoted Gibbs as saying, “That isn’t Redskins football.” They managed just three more rushes (two by receivers!) this game.

I don’t think Burnell was so much the problem in part because the Cowboys were getting pressure on him–6 sacks. Plus, did you ever see S. Moss truly open? After what he did to Dallas last year, I wouldn’t surprised if Dallas double-covered. (‘Course we don’t know that because NBC’s camera SUCKED. I almost never saw good shots of the receivers, even in replay.)

I look at those first two possessions at where it went bad. Washington was close to a first done (and called the right plays IMO). But a yard short is still a yard short. (Having Portis on 3 and 1 would have had a different result and a whole different game.)

So, take offensive comfort in Portis’s return.

Now, your defense should be a bigger concern. Even blitzing Bledsoe, he was throwing quick passes or actually getting time to scan his receivers. They managed to sack him only once.

I think you’re criticizing the wrong coordinator.

No, it doesn’t. What a stupid thing to say. Rooting against the cowboys is more important than rooting for the skins?

Guess that’s the difference between a redskin fan and a cowboy fan. You hardly cross our minds.

One down, one to go :)

  4. Dugger says:

Af if Campbell is the real answer. The answer is that Joe Gibbs is about two decades out of date and is dividing time between football and NASCAR. And in NASCAR, Tony Stewart didn’t make the chase.

Maybe yet some more high priced free agents is the answer.

They made Parcels look like a 21st Century innovator last night.

  5. Jet says:

As a 30+ year Packer fan, I feel your pain. It’s gonna been a long year. Who the hell in the Packer organization decided defense was overrated? Frozen assed morons. Sigh. Pass the schnaaps.

  6. Dana says:

And as an Oakland Raiders fan, all I can say is that at least y’all have scored a touchdown this season.

Mark Brunell would be an upgrade for the Raiders!

  7. GravyPan says:

Yeah, let’s not dare give any credit to the Cowboys defense.

  8. Dana says:

The headline in the sports section of today’s Philadelphia Inquirer is:

    Choke’s on us!

  9. WhiteWhale says:

Not only do I have Cooley and Brunell on my team but I also have Portis!(fantasy football) I know things are dire, but Campbell is an Auburn grad so I wouldn’t put it past him suck even worse and with less class.

  10. liberalrob says:

Brunell stunk because he was running for his life half the time. His protection was nonexistent. He had no one to throw to because the Cowboys have a very good secondary, including a 6′ 5″ safety so you can’t just hang it up there and let your receiver out-jump the 5′ 7″ cornerback. And of course Betts isn’t Portis.

  11. Roche says:

    Dana:

Yeah, one thing I’ve seen from most Philly sports teams is a bizarre ability to throw just about any lead. It’s like watching a train wreck done in bullet-time.

  12. Macswain says:

All good football starts in the trenches. So you can talk Jason Campbell, Santana Moss and even Randle-el all you want, things are not going to work for the Skins until the O line performs better.

  13. Macswain says:

Oh … and did I mention the Vikings are 2-0.

  14. Jet says:

Seems to me if memory serves me correctly, the Viking and the Phiily teams have a lot in common.

  15. The O-line was overmatched but then Dallas could stack the line and really apply the pressure.

The Skins D-line seems incapable of putting any kind of pressure on a QB. They actually made Bledsoe look good.

The Skins need a playmaking QB. One that can improvise in the clutch. Too bad that kind of talent is rare.

  16. mroberts says:

I kind of like and hate both teams, but boy was that game fun for Cowboy fans! Smackdown City (no matter how much it had to do with a poor game plan by the ‘skins).

Go Patriots! In Boston we’re so thrilled with Corey Dillon and Laurence Maroney that we are trying to come up with the best nicknames for them (a la Thunder and Lightning). So far we’ve got:

    Gillette’s Twin Blades
    The Boston TD Party
    Two If By Land
    Dreds and Treads
    Bump and Grind
    Smack and Pop

Of course, we already had a nickname for Dillon: Clock Killin’ Corey Dillon. Watching the game yesterday it seemed like it was one of the commentator’s first time hearing it – and he later flubbed it by saying Time Killin’ Corey Dillon.

We have had some shaky play, but we are out of the gates 2-0.

  17. mroberts says:

    CON’D from previous:
    Smash and Slash
Or including Kevin Faulk “Catch and Carry” and “Earth, Wind and Fire”!!!

    It goes on and on.

  18. Dana says:

Hey, Mr Willis, don’t get too drpressed: y’all still have tow games against the Eagles!

As in they both lost a Super Bowl to the Raiders? :)

Of course, the Vikings have twice the Eagles’ record in Super Bowls: 0-4 rather than 0-2!
