Reality Vs. Bush, 9/7/06

George W. Bush, 9/7/06

The past five years have also shown what we can achieve when our nation acts with confidence and resolve and clear purpose. We’ve learned the lessons of 9/11, and we have addressed the gaps in our defenses exposed by that attack. We’ve gone on the offense against our enemies, and transformed former adversaries into allies. We have put in place the institutions needed to win this war. Five years after September the 11th, 2001, America is safer — and America is winning the war on terror. With vigilance, determination, courage, we will defeat the enemies of freedom, and we will leave behind a more peaceful world for our children and our grandchildren.

Reality, 9/7/06

NATO’s top commander today urged members of the alliance to send reinforcements to southern Afghanistan, where he said fighters of the deposed Taliban movement are waging an insurgency of surprising intensity.

Speaking to reporters at NATO’s military headquarters in Mons, Belgium, after returning from a three-day trip to Afghanistan, U.S. Marine Gen. James L. Jones said NATO forces in the southern part of the country need help in the form of several hundred reserve troops, additional helicopters and transport planes. He called for the reinforcements as Taliban fighters continued a series of attacks in the heaviest violence since the group was driven from power in Kabul in November 2001.

Yesterday Bush talked about how the secret prisons had yielded important intel that stopped terrorist attacks.

Yesterday the Pentagon announced “new” non-torture guidelines for all prisoners. Stating that NO good intel ever comes from torture.

    Well hot damn!

WASHINGTON — The Senate agreed to spend an additional $63 billion for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan as lawmakers on Thursday passed a massive bill that funds the Pentagon.

The bill sailed through by a vote of 98-0 after senators added money to help track down al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden and fight the opium trade in Afghanistan that is helping fuel the Taliban’s resurgence.

    [snippage]

“What does it say to violent jihadists that a terrorist mastermind remains alive and well five years after killing 3,000 Americans?” said Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D. “Our bill tells the terrorists that protecting our nation is the first priority _ and that we are going to deliver to bin Laden the justice that a mass murderer deserves,” said Conrad, who sponsored the legislation with Sen. Bryon Dorgan, D-N.D.

Let’s hear it for the boys from North Dakota.

I wish for just one minute we could just sit down and talk about what “winning the war on terror” means. Or that a reporter would ask what our “clear purpose” has been in the war on terror. Or how much “vigilance, determination and courage” will cost in addition to the $463 billion and 2,700 soldiers we’ve pissed away in foreign wars.

The first thought that popped into my mind when I read Oliver’s headline was that George really was declaring war on reality. Silly, yeah, but I keep pinching myself in the hope that the last six years have been some sort of bad dream.

Direct quote from Bush —- For Immediate Release — Office of the Press Secretary — November 24, 2003

”Working with a fine coalition, our military went to Afghanistan, destroyed the training camps of al Qaeda, and put the Taliban out of business forever.” (Applause.)

“Silly, yeah, but I keep pinching myself ”

Try therapy. Dr Dugger believes your problem relates to self-hate - a conditon prevalent in leftist poltiical circles. We often see leftists actually physically abusing themselves - as if punishing themselves for the hateful positions they take. Ach du lieber, ven vill it all end!

You really think the left is more filled with hate than the right?

  8. Gravatar Icon 8 Dugger

Oh sure. By my score the extreme left worldwide has murdered 100M, the extreme right about 20M. Give or take a few million. Saw a show last night History Channel on Stalin where they estimated he alone murdered 40M.

But of course, does that really compare with Karl Rove with malice aforethought outing V Plame. What? Oh. Forget that last one.

Stalin is a leftist. Nancy Pelosi is a leftist. Nancy Pelosi is just like Stalin!

    Good work, Dugger.

“Stalin is a leftist. Nancy Pelosi is a leftist. Nancy Pelosi is just like Stalin!

    Good work, Dugger.”

Hitler is a rightist. Dick Cheney is a rightist.

    Etc Etc

Looking through the small end of the telescope, Quaker. The question was ‘left and right’ and concerned hate. I included the extremes of each. You chose to complain only about the left.

Stalin was responsible for the deaths of about 40m people. Yes. There is only one reason why anyone would factor that - or the number of people Hitler killed or had killed, or anything along those lines - into some kind of ridiculous historical scoreboard of people the left have killed vs people the right have killed, and that is to make themselves feel like they’ve proved a point to someone on the Internet.

Stalin killed more people than Hitler, therefore Left-Wing thought is more bloodthirsty than Right. Elephants are pink, Nellie is an elephant, therefore Nellie is pink.

Also Nancy Pelosi is a lot further right of Stalin than Dick Cheney is left of Hitler. (that was a joke, by the way, you don’t need to draw graphs or anything)

  12. Gravatar Icon 12 Dugger

Nimmer has a better measure of hate than killing people?? I an’t think of one.

  13. Gravatar Icon 13 Nimrod Gently

And once again we ask ourselves: is Dugger stupid or is he just being deliberately evasive because he can’t counter the real argument in front of him?

  14. Gravatar Icon 14 Quaker in a Basement

The question was ‘left and right’ and concerned hate. I included the extremes of each.

You did? Let’s go back and look:

Try therapy. Dr Dugger believes your problem relates to self-hate - a conditon prevalent in leftist poltiical circles. We often see leftists actually physically abusing themselves - as if punishing themselves for the hateful positions they take.

No, no “left and right” so far.

You really think the left is more filled with hate than the right?

Oh sure. By my score the extreme left worldwide has murdered 100M, the extreme right about 20M.

Uh…OK. There’s “the right is bad” but then there’s “the left is way worse!”

And, of course, this is all accepting your framing that Stalin and Pol Pot have any relevance to “left” or “right” on the American political spectrum.

    That, of course, is codswallop.

  15. Gravatar Icon 15 Dugger

So, I was really right all along, but you couldn’t stand it and now resort to the argument that communists (Stalin and Pol Pot, Mao?) aren’t leftists. I’m happy to leave you there.

  16. Gravatar Icon 16 Nimrod Gently

Dugger, Bare-faced Lies, I’d like you to meet Shame.

  17. Gravatar Icon 17 Dugger

    Nimrod,

Do you actually ever talk about anything? Have a thought of your own? You are like a little, taunting, inconsequential chipmunk. Wouldn’t you like to play in the real game sometimes and actually have interchanges with humans with whom you disagree? Its not as scary as it must look to you.

  18. Gravatar Icon 18 Nimrod Gently

Yes, constantly. The fact that I often fail to engage with a lot of what you say stems from a combination of refusal to let you frame the debate, and a deep-seated knowledge that you’re not worth the effort. I mean, let’s face it, you’re blatantly resorting to lying right now, so why should I dignify you with a direct response?
