You know Dana, as a Raiders fan, you shouldn't be talking any smack about the Giants.

As a neo-Skins fan (unless and until the Colts return to Bawlmer), I can dig what you're saying. But the club doesn't look good, and Gibbs seems to be going Old Coot on us.

I do believe that Brunell is capable of leading a club to paydirt if he can stay healthy. But that's a mighty big if--the dude's a smidge brittle not to mention long in the tooth. I likes what I sees in Campbell but he's still pretty green.

Ultimately, it's hard to argue with:

The only thing that matters is that Clinton Portis heals up, and how the Redskins play versus the Vikings at 7pm EST on September 11.

[Although, to pick a nit, it's EDT. We don't fall back until just before Halloween.]

Yeah, its an abysmal start, but I'm not going to throw that much weight onto preseason.

As a Raiders fan, I'm thinking that Mr Gibbs might not have gone 3 for 3 in Super Bowls.

And just who called that screen pass from his own 7 yard line with about twenty seconds to play?

Oliver, I think you're being a little hard on Wilpon. He writes the following:

I must admit that I don't believe in drawing any important conclusions from preseason football. That these NFL exhibitions draw so many fans and such excessive media coverage speaks to just how thoroughly the NFL has been able to brainwash America's sports fans, not to mention the saps I like to call producers and editors. The NFL has both created and filled a need for football, which is scary on several levels. But that harangue is best saved for another day.

The primary reason I don't believe in making grand declarations based on NFL preseason games is that coaches aren't trying their hardest to win.

Don't get me wrong, they're not trying for the right reason. To showcase all the good stuff in the preseason would be stupid beyond words. Why do that in games that don't count in the standings with players who won't be on the team in three weeks?

It's not just a matter of opinion that coaches don't go all-out.

But then he writes:

But I was cautioned by NFL scouts who have seen the Redskins on film or in person the last three weeks that there are some red flags.

They emphasize that the final scores of these games are meaningless, but the starters being so feeble is not. Scouts say that the starters for the Panthers, Eagles, Buccaneers, Seahawks, Giants -- among others -- have looked good in their limited appearances. Quite a few teams, the scouts caution, are showing progress each week that the Redskins haven't shown. Mark Brunell completed only 7 of 16 passes for 51 yards. And there's the problem of those injuries to Clinton Portis and Springs. Renaldo Wynn might have to be added to that list depending on how his sprained ankle feels after suffering what he felt was a low block.

I think he's right. It's one thing to lose a game during the preseason. But when your first team offense can't even score, then you've got some problems that could carry over into the regular season.

Besides, it won't matter. The Giants are going to win the NFC east with that monster defense they have. Think Mr. Arrington is going to have something to prove when these two teams meet Oct. 8?

Gibbs lost the Superbowl to the Raiders in Tampa 38-9.

Regarding the season, the Deadskins will be looking up at the Giants as we crush the league this year.

For the record, there is one other active coach who is 3-0 in Super Bowls. Though he's not in the Hall of Fame (yet).

The Redskins cannot win with Mark Brunell at quarterback. And I'm not just talking about this preseason. He has proved in two years that he no longer has the arm strength, the mobility or even the decision-making necessary to lead this team to the Super Bowl. Every snap Brunell takes is one less snap Jason Campbell could take. Let's find out NOW whether Campbell can play in the NFL. We already know Brunell can't.
