For The Record

4:51 pm EST August 6th, 2006 | Republicans | 30 Comments

The former speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich, who divorced his wife when she lay in a hospital bed, shut down the government, and had his ass handed to him after he tried to remove President Clinton from office — has now compared the Democratic Party to the Iraqi insurgency.

But we’re the crazy, wild and "unhinged" ones. These people have no shame. It’s what they do, its how they operate.

He got the GOP talking points memo. That will be the line from all the winger bobbing heads too for a while. I hear an insurgent is leading Santorum in the PA polls too.

  2. Organic George says:

But the icing on the cake is that he said this on FOX

  3. Mike says:

Hey, you guys should be proud. Aren’t the Al-Qaeda fighters Iraq’s version of our Minute Men? And they’re fighting those awful “anti-Semite” Bush puppets in the Iraqi government aren’t they? Sounds like your kind of guys to me.

  4. Analog Kid says:

    Oh the humanity!

So Oliver, just where is/was your outrage at Howard’s brother Jimmy Dean when, on July 25th, wrote a letter to the Democracy for America creeps:

“Three months ago, Joe Lieberman led Ned Lamont in the polls by more
than forty points. But you took a chance on Ned and thousands of DFA
members around the country pitched in to help his insurgent campaign.
The result? Two new polls show that Ned Lamont has surged into a
    narrow lead over Lieberman.”

You were spot on, Oliver, when you wrote:

“But we’re the crazy, wild and “unhinged” ones.”

Yes, actually you are unhinged. Either that or willfully ignorant.

  5. Sundown says:

Um, Analog Kid, your post has nothing to do with the subject.

And Mike, you simply are delusional.

  6. Dugger says:

Mother of God! Get a grip OW. He said a “legitimate” insurgency.” It wasn’t a NAZI metaphor like D Sen Durbin used against the troops.
I know you need to juice up the unthinking rabble but even most of the true beleivers are going to laugh at this one.

  7. Sundown says:

Ok, Dugger, you know that Durbin never said that, so you can go to the hot place.

  8. Dugger says:

    Sunny,

I said Durbin used a Nazi metaphor to describe the troops.

    You said he never did.

    What do you think America?

Here’s the GIs friend, progressive Senator Durbin:

“If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime–Pol Pot or others–that had no concern for human beings. Sadly, that is not the case. This was the action of Americans in the treatment of their prisoners.”

I didn’t even have to infer nazi. He used the word and threw in Pol Pot to boot. These are our troops he’s describing.

  9. midderpidge says:

Dugger just thinks American troops should torture, mutilate, and murder their prisoners apparently. Iraqi girl raped and murdered? Sounds like American ideals to Dugger. Iraqi prisoners raped with batons, threatened with dogs, daughters and sons sexually molested in front of them, Apple pie to Dugger.

There is a difference between describing specific actions taken by specific troops and applying that kind of label to the military as a whole. And there is a huge difference between pointing out these things are happening and trying to stop them from become representative of our forces versus trying to minimize and excuse them and creating an environment where these things can become representative.

  10. SaveFarris says:

And there is just as huge a difference between working behind the scenes to stop these alleged abuses and doing it on the floor of the Senate in order to score political points.

  11. Sundown says:

Wrong. Those were SOME of the troops he was refering to. And he was right.

Or are you, Dugger, saying that it’s a good thing that some soliders are torturing Iraqis? (Many of whom aren’t connected with terrorism, but were just in the wrong place at the wrong time) Do you think it helps America’s image?

  12. midderpidge says:

Alleged abuses? He was directly commenting on sworn testimony by investigators. People have gone to prison for the abuses he is commenting on. Is it alleged only in your mind, Farris, because you, like Dugger, seem to think these things aren’t crimes?

  13. Dugger says:

    Lets see, Sunny,

Durbin uses the word Nazi to describe the activities of US troops at Gitmo. Now Nazis murderd roughly 5,000,000 Jews in addition to a bunch of other bad stuff. Pol Pot, another one the Durbmeister throws into the hate-stew, only murdered around a million. What is the total number murdered by the Gitmo GIs, Durbin’s “Nazis”? What is it that justifies the use of the horrific metaphor Nazi in describing these US troops.

Likewise to you Midder. Whats even remotely close between murdering 5M Jews and what US soldiers did at Gitmo?

Or perhaps both of you mean that since Hitler brushed his teeth in the morning and the GIs brushed their teeth in the morning, they are clearly Nazis.

  14. Sundown says:

    Wow, Duggy.

Brushing your teeth is comparable to abusing a prisoner. How did you come up with that?

Seriously, I’m just stumped at how dental hygene, which I personally happen to think is a good thing (you may be different of course) is on the same level as abusing people, which I happen to think is bad (though sometimes I wonder if I’m in the minority on)

  15. Analog Kid says:

Sundown, only in your “Reality Based World” does posting a quote from brother of the Chairman of the Democrat Party using the same language as what got Oliver all worked into a tizzy have “nothing to do with the topic”.

If you’re going to decry one and rail about the other, you’re either ignorant or a hypocrite.

    Choose and Loose.

  16. Zython says:

Sundown, only in your “Reality Based World” does posting a quote from brother of the Chairman of the Democrat Party using the same language as what got Oliver all worked into a tizzy have “nothing to do with the topic”.

So wait. You’re saying that Howard Dean is his own brother. That’s…stupid.

News flash, Howard Dean’s brother is not Howard Dean. Newt Gingrich is Newt Gingrich. Got it memorized?

Next you’re going to say Jimmy Carter endorsed drinking because his brother did. Dumbass.

Seriously, I’m just stumped at how dental hygene, which I personally happen to think is a good thing (you may be different of course) is on the same level as abusing people, which I happen to think is bad (though sometimes I wonder if I’m in the minority on)

I suppose if the guards brush the prisoners teeth and are especially rough… Then again, Dugger isn’t exactly intellegent enough to think outside the box like that, so your guess is as good as mine.

  17. bryan says:

let me get this straight. Because of something one guy says, the other guy’s utterances are also OK. Someone asked where was the outrage when the other guy spoke, but forgot to condemn his guy too.

  18. “If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis,”

    Well, that was then.

Nowadays, most people would guess “Americans” right off.

    Thanks Rummy. Thanks Gonzo.

  19. midderpidge says:

Which historical or current armed forces to you think the following actions should be associated:

    1. Shoving a glow stick up a prisoner’s ass:

    A) Nazis
    B) US Armed Forces

    2. Forming prisoners into naked pyramids:

    A} Nazis
    B} US Armed Forces

    3. Beating prisoners to death during interrogation:

    A) Nazis
    B) US Armed Forces.

Get it? Durbin said those kinds incidents reflect the kind of cruelty and inhumanity the Nazis were infamous for and should never have occured with US troops. National fucking disgrace or a fraternity prank?

  20. Dugger says:

Murder scorecard: Nazis – 5,000,000 Jews.

Durbins’s Nazis (AKA US troops serving at Gitmo)- O.

And you think Durbin’s using ‘Nazi’ and ‘Pol Pot’ to describe US soldiers is OK. Soldiers serving there
Sunny, what happened to you. Did the conversation progress beyond juvenile taunts and you move on to DU?

  21. Sundown says:

What the hell are you talking about Duggy?

    I don’t post on DU.

And you still haven’t answered my question.

Do you approve of the abuse at Abu Ghraib?

  22. Duros62 says:

Not talking about murder here, Doogy. Talking about abuses of power.
    Stay on point, please.

  23. Dugger says:

    Sorry boys.

Sunny said Durbin was innocent. I say he’s (Durb)full of horsesh*t for using a Nazi metaphot to describe the Gitmo troops.

Here it is. If you don’t want to deal with murder, then don’t use Nazi to describe our troops. ‘Cause Nazis murderd a sh*tpot of people – only commies murdered more. Your guy used the Nazi metaphor.

  24. Duros62 says:

Again, Dugger, Durbin wasn’t talking about murder. Do you get that?
*dugger with fingers in his ears**”I CAN’T HEAR YOU!!!”

  25. Dugger says:

    duros

What in the hell part of Nazi don’t you understand? You are making the butt-silly point that Durbin didn’t describe the troops literally as murderers. He said Nazi. Nazis are most known and reviled for murdering 5M Jews.

He’s your man and he said Nazi re the troops. And this is a post where OW is complaining that Gingrich said “legitimate insurgency.”

    Sweet Jesus!

  26. So, Dugger.

If someone read the FBI report–to you–and didn’t tell you it was
Americans doing that, what would you guess?

  27. Zython says:

    Shorter Dugger:

It’s OK to torture and abuse people that may have done nothing wrong as long as you don’t kill them.

  28. Sundown says:

That’s pretty much the case, Zython.

Somehow, I think that when the abuses came to light, Dugger probably was happy inside.

  29. Dugger says:

    Quaker,

It was “an” FBI report. I would have more faith in American troops than I would Nazis and withhold judgement until I had a more complete picture. I would then find out, among other things, that the prisoners of Durbin’s ‘Nazis’ were actually gaining weight. You’ve seen the concentration camp pictures Quaker: those people look like they’ve gained weight to you?

But hey, troops volunteer and sometimes give their lives so that millionaire pandering jerk senators like Durbin have the freedom to call them Nazis.

  30. “It was “an” FBI report.”

    Yes.

“I would have more faith in American troops than I would Nazis and withhold judgement until I had a more complete picture.”

You mean you wouldn’t have guessed “Americans” right off the bat? I think that’s what Mr. Durbin was suggesting as well.

“I would then find out, among other things, that the prisoners of Durbin’s ‘Nazis’ were actually gaining weight”

Their weight has what to do with this? Can’t one be well-fed and mistreated?

“But hey, troops volunteer and sometimes give their lives so that millionaire pandering jerk senators like Durbin have the freedom to call them Nazis.”

He may have the freedom to do so, but of course we both know he never did.
