For those of you who came away from Lakoff’s “Don’t Think of An Elephant” thinking that it was crap, and have been highly disturbed by the way Dems have gone to him for the “magic words” since the ’04 election, you should read this book just out now from Geoffrey Nunberg. It’s what Lakoff would be if it made sense and was realistic.

(and I think someone should buy a copy for Sen. Bayh before he tanks his whole campaign)

  1. Dugger says:

Hey, no kidding, I think liberals opted to be all of those things – on the cover of the book. Why blame conservatives for your own lifestyle choices?

    Dugger

  2. BD says:

It’s not about the lifestyle choices, it’s about the conservative demonization of those lifestyle choices.

At least three of the items on that cover seem to me to be demonized out of basic xenophobia, but ultimately the whole shebang comes down to exaggerating our differences as a means of explaining why those differences should be shunned.

  3. stwendeler says:

Thanks for the recommendation, Oliver. I may actually pick that up as it seems interesting. Although, several hundred pages of “We raised taxes and couldn’t get people to buy into the phrase ‘investment’ and let the GOP paint us as tax & spenders” might get a little old.

    But, I’m sure it’ll be a hoot!

    Thanks!

  4. drpedro says:

yea, no doubt BD, xenophobia plain and simple.

Americans hate the japanese and their stinky sushi, the italians with their fu-fu coffee, and most of all those damn Swedes and their volvos!

The leftists continue to look everywhere for answers as to why they can’t win elections, except of course the real reason…..you have no solutions but the failed leftist ideologies that have already demonstrated their uselessness.

Instead of blaming others for your failure, why not look inward and seek the root cause?

Oh, yea…your lefties and can’t POSSIBLY be responsible for anything

  5. BD says:

Wow, Pedro. I’m stunned and cowed by your continued displays of senseless venom. Please, please, don’t hurt me anymore.

I didn’t say Americans hate these things, I say that they have been demonized and connected with liberals for no real reason other than that they are products of countries and cultures that aren’t American.

But I’m sure that explanation is more leftist pap, Pedro, and I expect to be beaten mightily about the shoulders with your cudgel of rhetorical vitriol for it. Oh, how I quiver.

  6. drpedro says:

Yup….and I don’t need to do much beating, as the facts speak for themselves.

Let me beat down your thoughtless argument with one word:

    Starbucks

Stop trying to present americans as thoughtless, mouthbreathing troglodites. You liberals are so convinced of your moral and cultural authority that you are blind to the reality of america today. No, the reason those things have been “demonized” is that they ARE the icons of the liberal, and most of america doesn’t like liberals and their holier-than-thou attitudes.

Believe me, if the liberals tried to wear the american flag, mom and baseball as hair-shirts proving their love for the “cause” (whatever that happens to be this particular minute), america would likely mock that too.

  7. drpedro says:

Great JSA, now argue with BD about why those other things are demonized then. But I will suggest that an “N” of 1 doesn’t actually prove or disprove an argument.

That being said, I suspect you will find more volvos among liberals than conservatives, etc, so the generalization is not all bad.

Personally, I like all that stuff, I drink foo-foo coffee, love sushi, I am not a huge volvo fan though.

“Stop trying to present americans as thoughtless, mouthbreathing troglodites.”

Hmmmm, I wonder where we’d ever get an idea like that:

“Why blame conservatives for your own lifestyle choices?”

    Or maybe it was this:

“Believe me, if the liberals tried to wear the american flag, mom and baseball as hair-shirts proving their love for the cause (whatever that happens to be this particular minute), america would likely mock that too.”

So drinking a latte is somehow suspect? If liberals liked baseball conserva
