Discourse In The Blogosphere

6:07 pm EST July 12th, 2006 | Politics | 28 Comments

The lapdog MSM gets itself all in a twitter when one liberal blogger disagrees with another or a Democratic pol, but when a right wing blogger advocates the murder of supreme court justices suddenly the press has more important things to do – like report on Paris Hilton’s latest STD or whatever.

  1. TomY says:

“Discourse” is only ever used by Republicans to shut up Democrats. Didn’t you know?

  2. Marty says:

Oh, poor Oliver. You take Misha seriously or is this just another talking point. That the big boys have ordered you to talk about?

The MSM took up the Frisch thing, en masse? I just don’t remember the Frisch thing being reported on the front page of the New York Times. Or on ABC news. Maybe I missed it in the LA Times. (

But I also don’t recall this particular mostly satirical rantblogger (who I have rarely come across) making threats and sexual/snuff inuendo about anybody’s 2 year old kid.

However- I will agree that the hype and nastyness on both sides is getting out of hand.

  3. Leroy Brown says:

Wow Frank. Just wow. You’re saying that someone advocating the lynching of five of the highest judicial office in the land is a “BFD”. I guess when a radical left-winger suggests that Bush is a war criminal and should be tried and executed we can expect this same sort of restraint.

    Jesus.

  4. Leroy Brown says:

Yea, Frank, nice dodge. Except you didn’t say it was absurd. You said “Big Fucking Deal” as if this is no problem. My point was when anyone, ANYONE says that Bush is less than a God you advocate stripping them of their citizenship and/or having them tried for treason. But when its suggested that five justices be lynched that’s just no “big fucking deal”.

    I repeat: Wow.

  5. drpedro says:

Kids, I know this is hard to take when you are the terminally indignent, but it is all about context.

Read Misha a bit more, and you will find he is a plethora of spleen about a variety of subjects, all colored with more “adult words” than most bars in Olongapo City when the fleet is in town. It is his “oeuvre”.

Now, if a somewhat unhinged lefty trolls on your site for a couple of days and then makes threatening noises about your FAMILY, see, the context is a little different.

For a bunch of people that run presidential candidates based on their ability to be “nuanced”, you sure are concrete thinkers….

  6. drpedro says:

Living proof that the lefties STILL don’t have a sense of humor…and can’t tell the difference between hyperbole, and an actual threat.

  7. Marty, again with the broken record. Anyways the MSM hasn’t exactly ignored the Frisch story. Will they cover this one? No, because IOKIYAR.

So, Pedro, you think its funny to call for the murder of supreme court justices? (And I guess regular judges too, because thats what GOP senators and reps have been doing)

  8. frameone says:

“Living proof that the lefties STILL don t have a sense of humor& and can t tell the difference between hyperbole, and an actual threat.”

Jeez, pedro you’re asking a little much of us here aren’t you? Almost everything that comes out of your mouths could be mistaken for an absurd joke.

  9. Leroy Brown says:

    Hey Pedro,

Like I said (and keep saying) where was this appreciation for humor whenever some criticizes Bush? If I jokingly said that Bush needs to be lynched you, Frank and the rest of the conservatives that inhabit this board would have verbally bitchslapped me onto the next website. (Justifiably so- I can’t find the humor in saying the most powerful figures in the country should be killed, so maybe I need you to clue me in.) But here a conserative has said we need to kill five justices (just like Coulter said we should kill Stevens- oh wait, let me guess, she was kidding too) and its not a big deal because he was kidding.

    One more time: Wow.

  10. frameone says:

Shorter Pedro: It’s okay for Conservatives to threaten the lives of government officials. It’s their oeuvre .

  11. Frank_D says:

Since no one is going to hang them, I don’t think it’s a big deal…
Now, if there were a crowd of ne’er do wells outside the Supreme Court with lots of rope, then I’d be concerned.

I’d never be as apopleptic as you liberals.

It’s unerstandable — just the thought of losing a few liberal judges must have taken your breath away!

  12. Marty says:

WOW, OLIVER!!! NINE WHOLE HITS ON GOOGLE NEWS! (Mostly in Arizona) The MSM IS JUST GOING APESHIT OVER THAT STORY! Next thing you know it will be updated on CNN and FOX every eight minutes.
You’re too funny, Oliver. (And what’s the matter? Does the “broken record” hit a little to close to reality for you?)
I’ll tell you what- if Misha Frisches himself from a teaching position at a major university because of his crass words, I’m sure that nine or so media outlets at Google News will pick it up. Heck- Matt Hale’s attorney will probably find a way to make sure of that.

  13. Marty: one minute nobody covered it, then its not enough outlets. And the “those must be talking points” thing is just so lame because as I’ve said – the Dems don’t produce very good or frequent ones, which is a significant part of their electoral failure.

  14. drpedro says:

Paul your lack of insight never ceases to amaze….but I did think a budding auteur as yourself would appreciate that I used the word “oeurvre”…..

  15. JayTea says:

Misha who? Oh, that guy. Read him once or twice, found his style offputting and his schtick annoying, haven’t looked back.

That being said, that is too much. He’s an idiot for having said it.

It’s still several orders of magnitude above veiled threats to kidnap and sexually misuse a 2-year-old because you’re torqued at the kid’s father.

    J.

  16. drpedro says:

No Ollie, their electoral failure is due to their lack of unique ideas or real world solutions to problems….but the more you believe it is cause you don’t have good talking points the better, you will just keep ignoring the real root cause.

  17. Sundown says:

Normally I refrain from stereotypes, buy I think one thing that does separate conservatives from liberals and moderates is that liberals and moderates have a real sense of humor. In other words, satirists like Stephen Colbert are funny, but threatening to murder people isn’t.

  18. Marty says:

Oliver- you misunderstand me. I am one of the few in here that understands that you want to be the one who WRITES the talking points. Thus much of what you write comes in the form of talking points. You write things how you wish the Dems would talk (and some try to) and repeat them over, and over, and over. Thus you not only latch on to Democratic talking points whenever you can- like “culture of corruption”- but also are very aware of the positioning of words like “Republican” and “Hate” (or “racist”)usually throwing out some ‘half of the story’ example that is supposed to support your point. But hey- you’re a partisan and proud.

Like I often say- when you actually take the time to put an actual original thought together, you have a great knack for writing with coherency. Unfortunately your niche is bomb throwing, antagonizing, and writing talking points, thus your true abilities (and often your ability to think things through and use logic) are usually thrown by the wayside in favor of pure partisanship.
So when I joke about your “talking points” understand that I’m often talking about your style and sometimes lack of substance- not necessarily who you’re mimicking. (Although in this case…)

But let’s get back to the topic at hand-

The lapdog MSM gets itself all in a twitter…

Usually when someone says something like that, I would expect that you were seeing something in the multiple MSM media outlets- like on the front pages of many major newspapers like the NY Times and Post, Washington Times and Post, LA Times, The Kansas City Star, the Phildelphia Enquirer, The Minneapolis Star Tribune… Hell even the Omaha World Herald. And by “a twitter” you’d think it was on the cover of Time, Newsweek, and a feature in People magazine. Then you’d expect to see it as a breathless feature on World News Tonight, the CBS Evening News, and the NBC Nightly News. Hey perhaps even a feature on Nightline and the alphabet soup of cable news stations.
I mean come on- you said “the lapdog MSM.” I was really expecting to see an example of a “LAPDOG MSM” in your link. I mean hell- I was even expecting to read five or six articles on Media Matters complaining about the “lapdog MSM” giving way to much coverage to this University professor who made threatening, sexual inuendo ridden, comments about killing someone’s two year old child and then quitting her job due to the ferver. But even Media Matters doesn’t have much about it. Wow- are the folks at Media Matters just NOT doing their job in this case? Should they be going after all those Arizona media outlets who thought that the local story about an UA professor who quit her job after she commented on a blog about her thoughts on the sexual abuse and murder of the site owner’s two year old child?
Yeah- they better get on that story.

  19. JayTea says:

Sundown, you will probably argue that this is “the exception that proves the rule,” but I will answer your allegation that the right lacks a sense of humor with one name:

    P. J. O’Rourke.

    J.

p.s.: Oh, what the hell. Let’s toss in Dennis Miller. And Robin Williams has shown signs of conservatism/libertarianism, too (although he was pretty brutal on Reagan back in the day).

  20. z adura says:

JayTea, I will grant you P.J. O’Rourke, but Robin Williams is about as liberal as they come. You can have Dennis Miller – he ceased being funny about 5 years ago.

  21. JayTea says:

So, you say Miller lost it about 5 years ago? I think that’s when George Carlin lost it, too. I’m not as familiar with Williams’ humor as I was years ago, but I still love his description of golf — that whole “fooked-up little stick” still kills me.

OK, then, how about Carlos Mencia? His bit on racial profiling in the military might have some messed-up geography vis-a-vis Iraq, but it’s hysterical…

    J.

  22. Jay C says:

You can have Dennis Miller – he ceased being funny about 5 years ago.

Ahhh. The moment he became a semi-Bush supporter. At least you admit that part. Most liberals come with the BS “he was never funny” routine when they were probably roaring in laughter when he was going at Newt Gingrich.

  23. Sundown says:

I do think that Miller and O’Rourke are of the different type of humor than “hey, lynching people is funny” than this Misha idiot is, so you’re right Jay. I guess my generalization has exceptions.

But from the fact that Misha hasn’t been shunned, and that drpedro thinks that Misha actually is funny, is just plain sick.

  24. z adura says:

JayC, I gave up on Miller when he tried to do Monday Night Football. That was about the time he switched from being funny into the hyper-masculine tough guy he tries to portray now. For the record, he used to be every bit as harsh on Clinton as he was on Newt Gingrich.

  25. PD100 says:

Soap. Toothbrush. Toilet Paper. Literacy. Right Wing.
    -Some assembly required.

  26. roche says:

Given how little a brouhaha was made when Tom DeLay and John Cornyn talked about how judges “had it coming,” the relative lack of coverage here doesn’t surprise me.

  27. drpedro says:

sundown, where did I say Misha was funny?

    Ahh…more leftist imagination issues…..
