You WILL Believe A Man Can Fly

Superman Returns: 4/4 stars.

Practically perfect.

More later.

UPDATE: Atrios charitably notes that I’m the only critic that matters on Superman Returns, it should be true but it isn’t. Heh. I do intend to write a more detailed review coming up soon, however.

I gotta say, I went to a late/early show too and I wasn’t impressed. Granted, I’m not as big a fan as you seem to be, but it just didn’t do anything for me. It seemed like two movies poorly jammed together. And don’t get me started on the symbolism… I think the word “subtle” is unknown to the director.

    Glad you liked it though.

Practically perfect? From this I can only assume that Superman has a cheery disposition, rosy cheeks, no warts! Play games, all sort he must be kind, he must be witty, very sweet and fairly pretty.

Not that there s anything wrong with that, but does Lois know?

The soundtrack is what always got me going. Glad to hear they’ve kept it. It’ll be fun to see how CGI Brando turns out, too.

LOL at the Mary Poppins reference, cypher!

Wow. I’ve been on the fence about going to see this.

On the one hand, Christopher Reeve was the definitive Superman - and stunningly good as Clark. So who’s this Rputh kid? And why is the shield on his chest 1) embossed, and B) teensy?

On the other hand: Kevin Spacey was born to play Lex Luthor.

Kate Bosworth seems like odd casting for smart, plucky Lois.

    But Oliver knows his Superman.

Half an hour shorter, and it would have been a perfect movie.
As it was, it kicked ass.

Tell me more, Ollie, about this so-called Super Man. I understand he can shoot webs from his wrists!!!

I’ve been reading some reviews, and it sounds boring. One reviewer even said Lex Luthor gets more screen time than Supe.
I’ll see it anyway — I’ll sneak in after I pay for Cars.

FrankD, the reviewer was wrong. Supes gets far more screen time.

As for the flick, I liked more than I disliked. I dug the effects, Lex’s plan was pretty good as far as evil geniuses go, and Superman’s homily at the end was note perfect. Still, Lois should have been at least 5 years older and I’m still not quite sure I buy the timeline we’re given.

    Still, it’s worth your time.

[...] Some of the blog guys are in disagreement over the new Superman film. Oliver Willis liked it and gave it 4/4 stars. Ezra Klein disagrees. I saw it yesterday and am voting with Oliver on this one. I was thoroughly entertained. It s especially fun to watch on an IMAX screen; some scenes are in 3D. Way cool. [...]
