Are Immigration Extremists Marginal Even In The GOP?

Chris Cannon was running in solid-red Utah as a supporter of Bush’s version of immigration reform versus someone more in line with the Minutemen, and the challenger lost badly

U.S. Rep. Chris Cannon said his solid victory in Utah’s Republican primary is good news for President Bush and those seeking a consensus on immigration policy this year.

“I hope what it means is Republicans look at this and realize we don’t have to be divided on the issue of illegal immigration,” Cannon said.

I don’t think I agree. An incumbent only getting 56% of the vote in a party primary is a bad sign.

Whatever the challenger did, he motivated the hard right wing base that votes in primaries. The more reasonable voters who only show up for general elections would have handed the challenger a spanking.

Of course, in Utah, there may just be a paucity of reasonable voters!

Speaking of extremism, who said this?

Sen. ______ _____ chastised fellow Democrats on Wednesday for failing to “acknowledge the power of faith in the lives of the American people,” and said the party must compete for the support of evangelicals and other churchgoing Americans.
“Not every mention of God in public is a breach to the wall of separation. Context matters,” the ________ Democrat said in remarks prepared for delivery to a conference of Call to Renewal, a faith-based movement to overcome poverty.
“It is doubtful that children reciting the Pledge of Allegiance feel oppressed or brainwashed as a consequence of muttering the phrase ‘under God,”‘ he said. “Having voluntary student prayer groups using school property to meet should not be a threat, any more than its use by the High School Republicans should threaten Democrats.

  5. duros62 says:

And your point is what, exctly, Frank? That Democrats have a concept of God and religion? Horrors! Don’t tell Ann!

  6. TomY says:

Strawman. If you want to characterize liberals as being really worked up about something, a more appropriate version would be something like the “strategic failure in Iraq is coming!” “strategic failure in Iraq is coming!” crowd.

  7. duros62 says:

Wow, nice generalization, Frank. And completely wrong, of course.

  8. duros62 says:

Sorry, that doesn’t sound like extremism to me. Sounds to me, as it always has, like common sense.

    This does, though.

See the difference, Frank, or should the letters be bigger for you to read and understand?

Since you obviously “read” it with no comprehension the first time, I will indicate for you the salient* points:

Does that sound like the kind of Democratics, and liberals, we’ve been hearing from lately? (The “God is coming!” God is coming!” crowd)

Unlike you, TomY, I see the world in greater than 24 hour units, and I get my news from all over the world, not just Krypton Central, DU, and DailyKOS.

There are few things that get liberals more exercized than getting close to outlawing abortion, and getting even remotely close to acknowledging the existence of God.

If the Islamofascists we were fighting were Roman Catholics from the South, the left would be clamoring for President Bush to go nuclear.

  11. Frank_D says:

And Melanie Morgan plays what role in the Republican Party?
    Besides none?
And of course if duros62 says it’s wrong with no support, documentation or evidence, then it must be wrong.
    Or not.

If the Islamofascists we were fighting were Roman Catholics from the South, the left would be clamoring for President Bush to go nuclear.

Frank, that’s a terrible thing to say and you know it. Do I need to cite evidence? Are you seriously suggesting that you believe no one in the Democratic Party believes in God or are Catholic?

You went OT on this thread about extremism to say something about Obama, positive or negative, I still can’t figure out. I happen to agree with Obama; that while I may not subscribe to the same beliefs as others, it won’t hurt me to respect those beliefs. A statue of the 10 commandments in front of a courthouse is not going to be the end of our society, nor is a creche at town hall.
Seriously, I don’t know how you manage to function in society

  13. duros62 says:

Next you re going to tell me it doesn t bother any Democratics or liberals you know.

    No, actually it doesn’t.
Frank, that is the most racist and intolerant rant I have ever seen you post here, and that’s saying something.
Of course, none of the Repulcians or conservatives you know wouldever make fun of a southerner or a Catholic, the Kennedy’s notwithstanding.
So, to sum up, you’re anti-semitic and you don’t like Italian Republican conservatives. Do I have that right?

I believe that liberals and Democratics know you can’t go wrong making fun of southerners (dumb rednecks), and Catholics (read “child molesting priests”, even though teachers molest way more children than priests.)
Coming up a close third are Italians. That’s why we’ll have a black woman President (C. Rice) before we have an Italian President (R. Giuliani).

Wm F. Buckley revealed the left’s dirty little secret years ago: Anti – Catholicism is to the Left, what anti – semitism is to the Right.

  15. Frank_D says:

I am a Catholic Italian Republican conservative Right – to – Lifer, you half wit*…

*Nice try, pulling the anti – semitism crap out of your rectum… What’s your stand on Israel – Plaestine?

  16. duros62 says:

Hey, man, you said it, I didn’t. Don’t go puttin’ words in my mouth, Frank. (and just for the record, you have called me a name unprovoked)

My stand on Israel-Palestine? Really don’t have one, to be honest. They both have the right to exist.
    Any other questions?
