So what is it we are allowed to do with despots? If we invade N. Korea will you show us pictures of us at the negotiating table with N. Koreans and say “see, you were TALKING to them!”

Pedro, Ronald Reagan sent his man Donald Rumsfeld to Iraq, and Ronald Reagan’s man shook hands with him over the weapons technology deal Ronald Reagan wanted to make with Saddam Hussein. Donald Rumsfeld reported back to Reagan that he had concluded the deal, and Reagan was pleased.
But Reagan didn’t make common cause with Saddam Hussein, even after the nerve gas attacks in Kurdistan. Of course he didn’t. To do that would be to do wrong, and Ronald Reagan never did wrong.
Pedro, don’t pretend that Hussein didn’t have the backing of America against Iran. That’s a basic historical fact that even the most diehard Republican has to admit.

At NO time did the US support the use of chemical weapons by Iraq. Period.
We absolutely support Iraq beating up on Iran, AT ONE POINT. Just like Germany and Japan were our enemies at one time (Britain too if you go back far enough).

So you agree Saddam had WMD’s, and in fact, we should have gone in EARLIER than we did to take them out?
You give great credence to my argument that by removing Saddam we prevented a much larger disaster in the future.
And you agree that

PD what do you call 12 years of UN negotiation, sanctions and resolutions. Are those not “diplomacy”? Is 12 years not enough?
And with the Iraqi’s buying off our allies with oil money, how effective do you think diplomacy was going to be?

Hussein had an abundant amount of CW and other military support from us, Britain, France, Russia.. -anyone who was willing to sell since Iraq was off the list of terrorist states despite his monstrous record. Does the USS Stark bring back any memories in between those misfiring synapses of anti-progressive belligerence? -the Stark missile attack was an attack on an American vessel, why diddn’t we go to war with Iraq then? Why diddn’t we attack Iraq when it was at the peak of it’s military power?- both in it’s convential and WMD capabilities?
Why? Because he was killing the right people at the time, namely Iranians -and anyone who was getting in his way, as in the case of Halabja. Piss and moan all you want but the record speaks for itself, despite W’s effort to reclassify those embarrasing realities or Powell’s half-hearted regrets. Sadly, much of his fathers record remains cloaked, proably more for Iran-Contra than anything else (paging Mr. Weinberger..).
But, if you want to bang the “”imminent threat” “Take him out” drum with looming mushroom cloud fanatasies brought to you by a gap-toothed imbecil who fails her way upwards the ladder..
During Gulf War One, Hussein had golden opportunities to use chemical warfare anywhere in the Persian Gulf and on Israel but clearly knew it would be suicide if he had done so. Iraq would have been nuked into a pane of glass the very instance if he had dropped as much as one CW shell. The threat of that kind of coaltion response remained up until the day he was captured, get it?
At he end of the first Gulf War, nearly all of Iraq’s major WMD facilities were demolished -much to the risk of the population and occupying coalition forces, but that’s another story, which remains largely ignored. Any remains of Iraqi WMD programs were later dismantled to by UNSCOM. -You still with us Peedro?
Is this to say that no WMD programs no longer existed in their entirety? Quite the contrary.
There were still a few moth-eaten Nuclear and CW programs that were still on the radar but later secured by the IAEA, Blix and others during the run-up to the second gulf war. Those secured and sealed sites (as in the case of Tuiwatha, which the Pantload Media still wets their pants over) remained that way right up until the second invasion, when looting immediately begun and Rumsfeld opined that “stuff happens” -along with material that could potentially be used in a terrorist attack. Forget that anyone who watches their loved ones or friends get blown to bits might harbor any animosity to their liberators.
What were our priorities again?
But, inspections were taking too long and the “imminent threat” that loomed (as far back as 1987, officially) was ready to happen any minute – diplomatic options, y’know -the kind that are free of um, death, be dammed.
Take him out, kill ‘em all, it’ll solve everything. Right?
