How could there possible be 1 and one – half million abortions on demand, and more than 10 times that many spontaneous abortions?
That is absurd…
And irrelevant.
You can’t solve every thing with education, you know. That’s why there have always been laws, for the rich and poor, the educated and uneducated alike.
And schools were not teaching children right from wrong when I was a kid, except incidentally, by punishing children who “misbehaved.” Take it from someone who took education courses in the 90’s, misbehaving and punishment were not popular topics then, and as a parent of two school age children, I can tell you, they are not popular school topics now.
Even you disapprove of “moral assertiveness”while trying to make a case for school’s “teaching right from wrong.”
How do you propose to teach children “right from wrong” without “moral assertiveness”?

Frank, how many spontaneous abortions occur in the U.S. every year (you know, the abortions a female body performs without help from a doctor/punch in the stomach)? I bet it’s close to 20 or 30 million. Probably more. That’s obviously an esimate, but I bet it’s close. Do you know of statistics on this issue? Anyone?

I think greater access to the day after pill would decrease the number of abortions by quite a large amount. Education will solve the abortion issue, not laws and moral assertiveness (saying things like “I’m right and you’re wrong and this is the way it has to be”). Education will also solve the violence issue too, but schools are too busy prepping their students for math and reading tests (and not science or social studies, especially low income schools who are “competing” for those federal funds) as opposed to teaching children right from wrong.

There was a time when if you killed someone when you committed a crime, you were virtually guaranteed the death penalty. Now, that’s not true. What has changed?
There was a time when “pulling the plug” on someone was a last ditch, last resort thing to do. Now, you simply file a “DNR” paper. What has changed?
There was a time when 30 something states outlawed or limited abortion. Now, abortion on demand, up ’til the midst of childbirth, is legal.
Now, It takes about 10 to 11 years, on average, to execute a death penalty. What has changed?
I’m not sure where to put the dots, but they are connected.
I just saw a “special” Oprah, with Elie Wiesel, filmed at Auschwitz.
A few interesting observations:
1) They said about 10 times that 1 and one – half million Jews were killed, without saying how many people were killed there: Catholics, Jehovah’s Witnesses, homosexuals, Gypsies, mentally ill, etc. {1 and one – half million pregnancies are terminated each year, in the US.}
2) At the end, they said we must always remember. Then they zipped through the sources of the footage, including memorials, museums, and websites, to get to — the commercial for Stanley Steemer!
3) How many Jews were killed by Palestinians today?

I m sure there are countries with more liberal abortion policies than our own, that have completely outlawed the death penalty, and don t have our murder rate.
You’re sure? I’m not. Even in Britain, where once only the Flying Squad was armed, has an escalating murder rate, and now even the Bobbies want guns.

I’m truly sorry if you small minded dolts can’t connect the dots from abortion on demand to elimination of the death penalty, and then restoring it again under limited circumstances — an indicator that taking a life is not the big deal it once was. [Which is why crooks murder everyone in the place during a simple hold up.]
For example, we have District Attorneys in NYC who have declared that they will not pursue a death penalty under any circumstances. It has been years since anyone was executed.
Still no dots?
How about Terri Schiavo, and X amount of plugs pulled?

I guess I’m an idiot, and you’re all smarter than I am. It’s a good thing I have enough self – esteem to realize that you’re in an invulnerable state of denial.

One more thing, real quick. Frank, if you were using the abortion on demand/cheapens life argument in regard to one of those stories about a 17yr old throwing her newborn in a dumpster, i’d say it MIGHT have some merit.

I actually don’t think you are going to find a 1:1 relation on concealed carry laws and crime rates…it is much too complex for as simple an answer as that.

Common sense would dictate though that if you were a criminal, you might think twice about robbing someone if there was, say, a thirty percent chance that person was armed.

We live in a world that contains true monsters…and as I am sure Cyrus can attest to, the police cannot be there all the time. What is wrong with a well trained populace carrying a weapon? Arizona is definately not in anarchy….

Frank, maybe the types of thugs that commit a lot of these crimes are far more enlightened where you live, but speaking as someone who spent seven years with the Philadelphia Police Department, yes, i can say emphatically that abortion on demand has absolutely nothing to do with crimes like the one Oliver linked to.

But there has been an increase in shooting everyone at a crime scene, even on videotape, so there won’t be witnesses.

It’s is in his neighborhood now. Now it matters.

JSA…there is a book out there by John Lott, “More Guns Less Crime” based on a study funded by the Olin Foundation. That’s the stuff Pedro is probably getting at.

Can you say “conflict of interest?” Most of the people who work in the business I do know that you can’t ignore obvious COI issues, or even the appearance of COI, without managing them.

Can Lott’s research be called into question because he was founded by a foundation that has loose ties with a gun manufacturer? IMO, yes, that’s a reasonable criticism of John Lott.

This whole argument is tired.

Guns are only part of a larger problem.

P.S. By the way…if OW doesn’t want a conceal carry law in D.C., he lives there, his view on this certainly trumps ours.

Using Drpedro’s site, NYC appears to have an overall violent crime rate virtually identical to Phoenix’s (1.23 times the national average vs. 1.16). Rates for Houston and Dallas (Texas allows concealed handgun permits) are higher, though not as high as Baltimore. This begs for a study (if it hasn’t already been done) of the amount of variance in violent crime rate explained by carry laws.
