Will America Fight Back?

Progressive government – economic security, relative peace, massive prosperity, effective government

Conservative government – massive deficits, wars of choice, government negligence leading to mass death, prosperity confined to the upper classes

It is a pattern that keeps repeating itself – FDR, Reagan, Clinton, Bush. Are we sliding back to sanity?

Public confidence in Republican governance has plunged to the lowest levels of the Bush presidency, with Americans saying they now trust Democrats by wide margins to deal with Iraq, gasoline prices, immigration and more, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll that underscores the fragility of the GOP’s grip on power six months before the midterm elections.

Dissatisfaction with the administration’s policies in Iraq has overwhelmed other issues as the source of President Bush’s and the Republican’s problems. The survey suggests that this increasingly pessimistic mood about the direction of the country — 69 percent said the nation is now off track — as well as the Republican Party and congressional incumbents have dramatically improved the chances of Democrats to register significant gains in November.

I can’t shake the feeling that a few solid Dem gains in the senate – PA, MT (maybe TN) and some governorships – MD, MA will be overshadowed by the Dems fumbling on the 5 again.

Of course not. I am discouraged not a moron. I will hope for the best and prepare for the worst. I did a lot of campaign work in 2003 and 2004. I thought for sure Kerry would win despite being a weak candidate who shot himself in the foot too many times and did not fight back against the swiftboat liars. He soundly defeated bush in all three debates and somehow he still lost. I spent the night of the election at the Dem’s party and was just stunned; it was like someone died. So, you can understand my lack of hope. It is kind of like being a Cubs fan, just not quite that bad.

Much to my disappointment, I have little faith that the Dems will gain any significant ground in November, nor do I have much faith they will capture the WH in 2008. I am not seeing any cohesive message from them, they are wimps when it comes to criticism on Iraq and they just seem weak and spineless to me. Past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior, so it does not look good.

Which means you’ll be voting Republican?

Spoken like a true neocon republican.

The Roosevelt Administration was characterized by “economic security, relative peace, massive prosperity”?

    I’m holding my sides laughing.

And as I mentioned in a previous thread, the infamous “Bush at 29%” poll also gave only a 23% approval rating for Congressional Democrats.

    But ABC News insists,

“… with Americans saying they now trust Democrats by wide margins to deal with Iraq, gasoline prices, immigration and more…”

Mmmmkay … something ain’t adding up here.

  8. Let’s see – Roosevelt won the war, ended the Depression and led to the 50s boom.

I think you would have to include Eisenhower in this assessment, the Cold War and Korea notwithstanding.

Democrats are seen as better on these issues right now, but that’s because mostly we aren’t talking about them. We are benefitting from Bush administration missteps.

When national Dems get face time on TV, what we get almost without exception is a watered-down rehash of the GOP position. And this goes to a previous post of yours, Oliver, that voters want the Dems to fight. They can’t fight. It would be like fighting the mirror.

We see it on vote after vote, on issue after issue. The Democratic position is that we are better managers, not that we have better policies or that we are better for America.

“I’m a better manager” is not a rallying cry. We will fumble on the 5. Cause we don’t want to score.

  11. sooperedd says:

Agreed. The Dems are far better managers. The republicans hate government, why WOULD they be good at it?
