Gingrich indicated that if Panetta and Company would have worked with them on the plane, that the job of sending a stopgap bill would have been easier. “Rep. Chris Shays (R-Conn.) said Clinton’s failure to open budget talks on the trip was “more than a snub. It was a missed opportunity for dialog.”

The shutdown was indeed the result of a failure to compromise from many parties.

That having been said, Gingrich is way too partisan to have his comments be taken seriously.

Interesting how no one on the left challenges your ‘people’s’ history. The government shutdown in question was caused by many factors but certainly a large share, probably the largest share, of the blame goes with Bill Clinton and his veto.

“The most recent shutdowns occurred in FY1996. There were two during the early part of the fiscal year. The first, November 14-19, 1995, resulted in the furlough of an estimated 800,000 federal employees. It was caused by the expiration of a continuing funding resolution ( P.L. 104-31) agreed to on September 30, 1995, and by President Clinton’s veto of a second continuing resolution and a debt limit extension bill.” (Sharon Gressle)

But by all means ignore real history and go back to your comic book villains. The chorus here knows no better and is not curious.

Yes, this is the same Newt Gingrich who shut down the government because he didn t get to fly on a plane with President Clinton.
Dugger has the details — I was going to say, “The only truths in that statement are that Newt Gingrich was Newt Gingrich, and Bill Clinton was Bill Clinton.”

I seriously think he wants to make a run at the nomination. He’s making face time constantly on FOX News, he’s saying “moderate” things like the NSA tapping is bad and he’s trying to set himself up as a leader from back in the prosperous 90s. There’s got to be more up his sleeve other than he needs attention…

Newt just trying to de-marginalize himself, by playing off the partisan atmosphere he did do much to create. He probably thinks he can look like a moderate, but we remember him for what he is and was.
