Sub-Strata

Heck of job, Bushie.

President Bush s job-approval rating has fallen to its lowest mark of his presidency, according to a new Harris Interactive poll. Of 1,003 U.S. adults surveyed in a telephone poll, 29% think Mr. Bush is doing an excellent or pretty good job as president, down from 35% in April and significantly lower than 43% in January.

If Karl gets indicted, I bet Bush falls to 25%.

bush gave a commencement speech at my alma mater last week. http://www.ocolly.com/ For today’s trivia question, at which university did Richard Nixon give the commencement address three months before his resignation?

    It’s pony time!

  4. JK says:

Wow. That is historic. 29%. Not in my lifetime have I ever seen a U.S. President hit that kind of low.

I just read that a reeling GOP Senate just voted today for a $70B tax cut, mostly to wealthy families and investors.

Tonight, on the way home from work, I heard Laura Ingram explain to her minions why an NSA database of our outgoing phone calls was a good thing.

    Pause………………….

If I were to type, at this moment, what I thought of the GOP, conservatives, and Red state America…I would never welcome back on this blog. It’s not hate…but it’s damn close.

If bush hits 25% I think the prize ought to be something other than just another damn pony.

  6. elrod says:

29% should set off panic alarms. Republicans in Congress have no idea if they should circle the wagons (as Rove has instructed) or declare independence. I think they’re screwed either way. Bush is now at a point where a major external event – like a terrorist attack – would actually make people hate him more, not rally around him. The only thing that can help is pulling troops out of Iraq and a sudden plunge in gas prices. I bet that would only get him back to 39% though.

Peggy Noonan said it for me yesterday:

    Power is distancing.
When you’ve been in Congress for a while, or the White House for a while, you both forget too many things and learn too many things.
You forget why they sent you. You forget it’s not that you’re charming and wonderful. You forget it’s not you. You become immersed in a Washington conversation, a political conversation, that is, by definition, unlike the normal human conversation back home. To survive and thrive, national politicians have to speak two languages, Here and Home. Actually it’s more than two languages, it’s two cultures. It’s hard to straddle cultures.
But even as you forget a lot, you learn a lot. You get crammed into your head the political realities on the ground around you–how big the minority Democratic bloc in the House really is, how many votes the other team has in what committee, where to go for legal money, how the press will react to any given decision or statement.
In time you know a lot of things the people who sent you to Washington don’t know. And you come to forget what they do know. It used to be easy for you to remember that, because it’s what you knew too.

That’s why I don’t trust politicians. And, until I can trust politicians, I don’t trust government.

  8. Nimrod Gently says:

So where are the Republican trolls up in this piece?

  9. Frank_D says:

Nimrod Gently: Trolls are not “people not liked by Nimrod.” You are all glorying in a number…

Is there an answer, or response you were expecting?

There is, however, some interesting news from the Not – Very – Conservative Brookings Institute

    http://www.brook.edu/fp/saban/iraq/index.pdf

You can file it in the “Why won’t the Bush administration go away?” file…

  10. Wilbur says:

I think that was probably the response that Nimrod was expecting: sh*t-eating poohpooh-ing of the poll numbers and 57 pages of “oops, change the topic!”

If it looks ike a troll, talks like a troll, and spews partisan hackery like a troll…

  11. Frank_D says:

Of course, Wilbur, your response was as lacking incontent, as it was predictable.
Maybe I can clear up your obvious confusion.

    1) My first comment more or less agreed with Nimrod that the Republicans were messing up, but not because they were about to get booted off the political equivalent of American Idol. Obviously such a direct and intelligent response threw you for a loop.
    2) My second response indicated yet another string of successes for the Bush administration, obviously a better kept secret than the counterterrorism tactics of the NSA — yet another indicator of the MSM’s anti – Bush bias.

  12. factcheck says:

With the decreasing poll ratings of Bush, his supporters are looking more and more like a focus group, not to be taken seriously.

  13. Dugger says:

So when will Democrats start an effort to enact a constitutional amendment to make poll results cause for removal from office?

‘Now, Mr. Dugger, take your choice. You can have these bright and shiny JimDandy poll results, reinforcing your strongly negative prejudices about the opposition or you can have 8 years of real power by controlling Congress and the Presidency while doing things like appointing conservative supreme court justices (with the connivance of conservative Democrats) and passing tax cut legislation.’

Dohhh. I think I’ll take those JimDandy poll results.

    Dugger

  15. O.Y.E. says:

    Frank is absolutely right.
Think about it — This is the only liberal blog in the entire world where the right wing moonbat commenters have completely taken over and the liberals are the trolls!!

    Way to go, OW!

    Either, or?

That implies that holding power results from NOT having good poll results.

Let us put that to the test, shall we?

LOL … Beans, I TOLD you we shouldna disagreed with him!! He knows better just beCAUSE. Still can’t find Frank’s website and its wealth of facts and superior knowledge.

  18. TomY says:

The only thing I’m not looking forward to is the right wing pushback. The “Dems=Nuclear Traitors” and bible banning idiocy and anti gay whatnot. That’s going to suck. Otherwise it’s hard not to be excited about the potential for a Democratic House.

  19. Dugger says:

Yes Quaker, and now that I think about it, Jim Dandy makes grits and doesn’t do polls.

    Dugger

“I was riding on a submarine
Got a message from my mermaid queen.
She was hanging on a fishing line.
Mr. Dandy didn’t waste no time!
    Jim Dandy to the rescue!
Go, Jim Dandy! Go, Jim Dandy!”

  20. Frank_D says:

Great song, Dugger! One of my faves!

  21. factcheck says:

“Hint: relaxing border security, giving illegal immigrants amnesty, and relying on the UN to prevent nuclear proliferation have never worked. Try something else this time.)”

    Nice strawman.

  22. Mike says:

Actually the more interesting results are further down in the poll.

Congressional Republicans got only a 20% approval rating. Dems did just as bad, only 23%. And the overall approval rating for congress is just 18%. With numbers like those, I would find it hard to imagine that Bush could score anything appreciably higher.

It’s also interesting to note that 68% of self-identified liberals gave Congressional Democrats a disfavorable rating and 64% of self-identified Conservatives gave Republicans a disfavorable rating.

If anything, these ratings show that neither party is making their base happy.

You also have to look at the direction of the country. Those numbers are bad too — only 24% are positive about the direction of the country. But those numbers have also steadily fallen for years, and according to the historical polling data it is very rare for this number to ever rise above 50%.

I think a lot of people are worried about oil, gas prices, and a looming war in the Middle East. They are also worried about illegal immigration and our ability to deal with large-scale disasters, whether they be from terrorists or nature.

We are also terribly, terribly bored with Washington.

If the Democrats want to win, then they need to push good, historically proven solutions to these problems. (Hint: relaxing border security, giving illegal immigrants amnesty, and relying on the UN to prevent nuclear proliferation have never worked. Try something else this time.)

  23. midderpidge says:

That was a phone poll. I think the NSA had the results before Harris did.

  24. buma says:

That s why I don t trust politicians. And, until I can trust politicians, I don t trust government. — frank, who endorses NSA wiretapping, ‘data-mining,’ the criminalization of abortion, etc.

Yo frank — bush is government.

  25. Frank_D says:

Thanks, buma. You’re a veritable font of information.
I favor the elimination of abortion, because I do not favor the willful, arbitrary, and capricious termination of pregnancies. It need not be “criminalized”, whatever that means (Strike one for you).

Either the NSA is wire – tapping or they are “data – mining”; they are not doing both. They are not engaged in warrantless wire – tapping, to the best of my (and your) knowledge; they are engaged in data – mining, which is not illegal, and which is helping to track down terrorists. Are you opposed to “speed guns” on highways, baby seats, or seat belts? (Strike two for you.)

And, Bush will be out in 8 years maximum. Most Congresshumans are there for life. (Strike three for you)

    My name isn’t “Yo Frank”.

    You’re outa here!!
