The Republican Party Platform for 2006

There is a distinct possiblity that if the Democrats somehow gain the majority they could… shudder… provide congressional oversight of the executive branch.

GOD. DAMN. THEM.

OVERSIGHT? OVERSIGHT? In the era of Our Lord Bush The Second And His Mighty, Mighty Brass Ones?

Why don’t you just let Bin Laden march down Pennsylvania Ave. if we’re going to allow “oversight”?

I think this is going to backfire on the Pugs. Sure, it’ll scare some people. But most people — liberal and conservative — actually like the idea of divided government. That’s why this is a message they’re only distributing to their base, not the general public. Bring it on, I say.

  2. TomY says:

I think the public would be interested in an investigation into the extent to which Republican appointees in various agencies hand out contracts to companies who, in turn, make political contributions, and are then awarded government contracts again. Also the wiretapping nightmare. The more attention paid to these issues, the better.

i’d love it if someone took a hard look at the undeniable FACT that every time a “conservative” tried to govern, they failed abjectly. no “conservative” has governed by alleged conservative standards.

they don’t spend less, just differently. they don’t hand out less money to cronies, it’s just different cronies. they don’t do a damn thing different than any other majority has ever done.

now they’re sinking under the weight of their own perfidy…and no one seems to know.

    meh!

It’s why the Hedonists are so desperate to keep control. I mean, aside
from all the cash that can still be wrung from the working stiffs

  5. bryan says:

“We don’t care about making your dreams come true, we are just offering to protect you from those nightmares we’ve been telling you about”

  6. TomY says:

Your link was more of the same, tired, conservative conventional “wisdom” from the 31 percenters. And it’s not even an argument against oversight; it’s just anti Democrat. Yawn.

  7. Semanticleo says:

every time a conservative tried to govern,

According to “The Jonah” Goldberg, true conservatism hasn’t really
been tried yet. Bush is really a Liberal.

  8. bryan says:

Oh, and we can also catch a good fish. A bad day fishing trumps a good day screwing up the country (or world).

  9. Frank_D says:

Tommy: The “people” don’t do what you lefties want…

    They do they want.

And they are not going to vote for the Party whose campaign slogan is, “Vote for us, and we’ll investigate the Republicans”

Or maybe, “Remember the Watergate Summers? They’re baaaacckk!

  10. The Watergate era – another Republican with low approval ratings that, thanks to congressional oversight, was thrown out on his ass.

Yeah, “Vote for us and watch us screw the pooch for two more years” is clearly a more compelling election year slogan.

  11. Frank_D says:

I didn’t promise that the Republicans would be investigated if the Democrats won — Nancy Pelosi did. Several people, from different parts of the political spectrum, have questioned the wisdom (that’s putting it mildly) of this move.
    But not you.
That’s OK with me — I like it when Democratics lose.

  12. Bill L. says:

Nah, they’ll vote for the party whose campaign slogan is “vote for us and we won’t investigate Republicans…ever.”

    or

    “We’re scandal-icious!”

    “You don’t know Jack!”

    “We’re constitutionally slimming!”

    “Clenis!”

I’m sure there are plenty of winners to go around. Of course, the Dems did come up with “we can do better,” so there’s no guaranteeing they won’t f*ck up this slam dunk, too (especially by rolling over for an Iran attack).

  13. midderpidge says:

I don’t know if I’d call it the “investigate the president” platform, I think I’d call it the “restoring responsibility in government” platform. Then I would come up with some legislative initiatives against current abuses (wiretaps, corruption, lobbying abuses, Iraq etc) and bring that up first when talking about investigating the president. That puts it in a context of doing something about a reprehnsible political trend embodied by the white house instead of in a context of revenge.

Make investigation one step in a process of governmental reform.

  14. duros62 says:

    Bill L.:
    You forgot: “9-11!”
Semantic: If George Bush is a liberal, then Oliver Willis is Lex Luthor. :-)

  15. Bushwacked says:

“The Democrats big problem is they have no ideas other than to blame Republican for everything. That s not leadership and it certainly doesn t inspire votes,…”
The democrats definitely need to better express their vision for America instead of just oversight of Bush.
With the majority of the country sick of the Iraq war, disgusted with the ineptness of FEMA and opposed to the policy of prying into the personal communications of American citizens without obtaining or even seeking a warrant from the FISA court, just to mention a few, I believe such a strategy would only help elect democrats. But if the republicans want to make the “threat” of Congressional oversight of the executive branch their primary issue in the fall campaign, I say go for it, since it has been virtually nonexistent since Bush has been in office. Please do.

  16. mikebdot says:

Democrats are running on a platform that says they’re actually going to do their jobs and provide oversight? That should screw up their chances!

What kind of logic is this? Oversight is one of the many functions of congress. They have not been doing it recently. Throw the bums out.

  17. Rounds77 says:

Anyone ever notice how conservatives are so against oversight when it’s them being investigated? When it’s a democrat, they’re willing to spend tens of millions for such crucial, necessary oversight. In Clinton’s case, it probably would’ve reached the billions if there were no Monica. What monumental hypocrates!

As far as the Democrats blaming the Republicans for everything. I heard that mantra in reverse day after day when I used to listen to Limbaugh and other conservatives (when I had that strong a stomach).

  18. Frank_D says:

Are you kidding? I love oversight!
It makes your lip stick out ever so slightly, and…
    Oh, wait! That’s overbite!
    Never mind.
