By most accounts, Porter Goss’ tenure at the CIA was a mess. Shockingly a partisan political goober ruled as a partisan political goober at our nation’s top intelligence agency. When Goss was up for confirmation these facts were laid out. The media essentially ignored them, but Democratic senators had the information in their hands — yet only 17 voted against his nomination (to her credit, Senator Clinton voted “nay”). That continued this idiotic tradition of voting for Bush appointees that are unqualified or incompetent (ie. Michael “I Likes Da Ponies” Brown, Condi “Osama Who?” Rice) but ignoring that in exchange for some sort of presidential lattitude that never existed between 1992-2000 when the White House resident had a (D) after his name.
Can we expect the same of our Democrats in the Senate when the likely nomination of Michael V. Hayden rolls around? Hayden misled a previous congressional panel and was then rolled out to snow job the compliant press when the president’s domestic wiretapping was revealed (well, after the New York Times delayed the story to come out when the election had passed).
The Democrats in Washington seem to think this fall’s elections will just drop into their laps, but the GOP in the guise of Bill Frist plans to get the blood cells of the right-wing marks boiling again with the same b.s. they’ve pushed election after election (gay marriage, flag burning, etc.). The Democratic base across the nation wants to vote for you guys, but what the heck is the use when you’re just going to rubber stamp another crony to the tune of 77-17 again? If you believe in America, throw his ass under a bus.
>> Hayden might want to brush up on his Constitutional knowledge.
You hate him already?

A Democrat said so Oliver repeats it. The guy went in and cleaned a little house and the internal bureacrats got pissed. Of course Ollie in all of his infinite wisdom claims it’s because Goss was a ‘partisan.’ Please. Everybody to the right of Ted Kennedy is a partisan to you.

Do you ever actually think before you write such ignorant things?
It would have been difficult to find somebody less qualified than Porter Goss to run the CIA. He was recruited by the CIA after spending 2 years in the Army where he worked in intelligence. His ability to speak 4 languages (English, Greek, Spanish, and French helped). He was in the CIA for 10 years. Imagine, an actual CIA agent become head of the CIA! The horror!
Think a little. Get the “Republican=bad, Republican=bad, Republican=bad” out of your head for once.
It would have been difficult to find somebody less qualified than Porter Goss to run the CIA.
We agree, Jay Caruso.
The problem with Repugs is that they think a couple years experience as a mid-level employee of an organization makes someone qualified to run that organization.
Note to Spineless Democrats…
What Oliver said….
I can remember *someone* who chided Greens for saying exactly the same thing about Democrats in 2000, Oliver. They were right then, and you are right now. Glad you could come around.
Was he just unqualified or just unwilling to cooperate with “the plan”?
No, no, I think we should support the nomination of General J. Edgar Hayden wholeheartedly! This is a man who could not even address, let alone deny, that the NSA is spying on Bush’s political opponents. If you thought Goss was a clownish fuck-up, wait till we get a load of what this ass head will do! And when we start getting the news of the criminality and incompetence coming out of Hayden’s tenure, it will be one more noose to hang around the neck of Bush and all his cronies. I increasingly thing the Democratic theme for 2006 ought to be the utter incapacity of GW and the rubber-stamp Republican congress to place anyone remotely qualified in positions of authority. The R’s have said for years that government is the problem, and they set out to prove it by making the government in all its roles worse every day!

Hayden’s unspoken response: I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you.
Well except for the matter that Goss continually said the DCI job overwhelmed him and even said before he had the job that he wasn’t qualified for it. But he had an (R) after his name, so the myth was accepted as fact and he joined the CIA and instead of doing the housecleaning that should have been done FIVE YEARS after 9/11 he thought a partisan purge was the answer.

Oliver
I heard an interesting theory. Could it be that he is going to run against Cruella Harris in the FL republican primary for US Senate? Apparently the filing deadline is getting close and, while it is still very early, she is not looking to good in the polls?
I’m talking about Porter Goss.

“The jobs I’m being asked to do, the five hats that I wear, are too much for this mortal,” Goss said. “I’m a little amazed at the workload.”
— Porter Goss, a man supposedly familiar enough with the workload, according to Jay C’s argument.

It would at least put party above national security.

Sometimes the jokes just write themselves, don’t they?
Selecting Hayden will just add more basis for the theory that bush has a bald head fetish.
