Steele Panderer

Michael Steele has been a good little boy and muted his position on the death penalty in deference to Gov. Ehrlich’s position in favor of the practice, but all of a sudden now when he realizes – oh, there may be problems with the death penalty among black voters – he speaks… sort of.

Breaking a long silence, Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele said he believes there is reason for concern about racial, economic and geographic disparities in the way people are sentenced to the death penalty.

“Our system does have flaws,” he said. “The racial component is a genuine, legitimate concern. That’s something that needs to be addressed.”

“Three and a half years to suggest nothing but further study?” said Derek Walker, the spokesman for the Maryland Democratic Party. “For an issue he claims to care so deeply about, there’s been a startling lack of principled action.”

Personally I support the death penalty, as well as installing as many safeguards as possible. But Steele won’t say what his position is, just that it needs more study as if that should do the trick with black voters. It’s like how he plays down the fact that he’s a Republican or a conservative on his website (Strangely this recent picture of Steele fundraising with Bush is nowhere to be found. Hmmmm.).

Somehow he thinks he can pull the wool over Maryland’s eyes.

Where have I seen that strategy before…

For those of you keeping score at home, it’s a-ok to call a grown black man a “little boy”, just don’t call him articulate.

A wish list of platitudes != a position.

Yeah, I’m for affordable health care, safety, and frolicking puppies in the meadow. But that and $4.50 gets me a cup of coffee. Your link doesn’t list any policy positions (w/ two exceptions, one being increased CAFE standards), merely hoped-for outcomes.

The other exception is a call to increase Pell Grants. Which, ironicly enough, is directly underneath the section that bashes Republicans for increased spending!!!

Bush’s position on Global Warming, perhaps?
