Not Ready To Make Nice

('DiggThis’)

I’m not the biggest music fan, but the new Dixie Chicks song, “Not Ready To Make Nice” (a sentiment I fully endorse), is now available on iTunes. At the very least it’ll make a wingnut grind its teeth.

(its already #2 on the Country charts, outdoing my beloved Honkytonk Badonkadonk — shut mah mouth, slap your grandma)

Doesn’t the “Dixie” part of their name make them some kind of hate group? I demand an investigation. The Dixie Chicks have made me UMCOMFORTABLE.

And BTW, it would follow that you are not a big music fan and therefore like something the Bush-hater Chicks have done. (I apologize for the last remark)

  2. And BTW, it would follow that you are not a big music fan and therefore like something the Bush-hater Chicks have done.

    Waaaaaaaaah!

Looks like America is Bush-hatin’ country then since the Dixie chicks are more popular than Chief Clearing Brush; he’s at 35% according to the latest WSJ poll.

  3. elrod says:

Dixie has nothing to do with hate. It’s shorthand for below the Mason-Dixon line, which separates Pennsylvania and Maryland. Yes, Washington, DC is in Dixie.

  4. buma says:

BTW, Neil Young is going to get dixie-chicked way more than the Chicks themselves.

  5. buma says:

Dixie came from the French (horrors!) word for the number ten, dix.

  6. BD says:

It’s all well and good to make ad hominem attacks on people’s politics, Dugger, but if you’re going to disparage somebody’s taste in music you need to step up and admit your own listening tastes.

  7. BD says:

Yeah, but Neil Young is Canadian. And he’ll be dismissed more easily, besides, because he used to belong to the Bush camp on these matters (See “Let’s Roll.”)

  8. Frank_D says:

    Oh, great song!

  9. Frank_D says:

The Dixie Chicks didn’t get their name from “Dixie”, they got their name from Little Feat’s “Dixie Chicken”
And the song has NOTHING whatever to do with politics
    Nice try, though…

  11. Zappa says:

    Frank -

Remember all the songs from when you were young – there were code words for things like sex and drugs that on first listen sound pretty tame…

Just saying that is the wonderful thing about music is that it can mean so many things…

do check out Neko – all kidding aside…

  12. Frank_D says:

And if you saw the video, you’d stop dreaming, and realize that, unlike you, they appear to be involved in other things beside Bush bashing.
It’s a “we broke up, and we’re not getting together again” song.

Did you see, or hear, any indication whatever, that the song was in any political? The web site we were directed to has the lyrics. You can watch the video as many times as you want.

Anybody see or hear anything about Bush, the White House, the war, Republicans, politics, etc.?

  13. Zappa says:

Come on OW we know that Frank has been living under a rock! :)
If you don’t think this song is political you probably think the Phil Collins’ “In the air tonight” is really about his witness to a drowning…

I gave it a good listen – I would say it IS all about the backlash they got from speaking out against the Iraq Debacle – pretty clear to me – people were pretty hateful to them. With that in mind it has that certain something that makes a song more touching.

  14. Zappa says:

The Chicks are ok (I was fond of their cover of Stevie Nicks Landslide) and I am glad that the fans are forgiving after being upset with them for being against the war to begin with – but if you wanna to hear some great Country singing listen to Neko Case – not only is she cute as a button she sings wonderfuly.

  15. Dugger says:

    BD,

On my car CD player you will find the the best of Gilbert and Sullivan, a little Wagner (please no quick conclusions – I like the Bugs Bunny/Elmer Fudd ‘kill thuh wabbit” Wagner), Mozart, 42nd St, Leon Redbone and other such antiquities.

My tastes in music and fiction are admittedly rotten and hugely out of date. I don’t seriously criticize anybody’s music taste.

Zappa, I’m not upset about them opposing the war, merely the (IMO) cowardly and pretentious way they had of making their preferences known. If they are a real country group, why not go down to Warner Robins or Columbus, Georgia or some such place and tell those people all about our horrible CINC etc. – instead of London.

Elrod, thanks for the very literal reminder.

Dugger It is my very humane endeavour
    To make, to some extent,
    Each evil liver
    A running river
    Of harmless merriment.

  16. Zappa says:

Sorry about the typos – I am drunk.

  17. Frank, if you think the song’s got nothing to do with politics, you’ve been living under a mighty big rock.

  18. Frank_D says:

zappa: also a good song, but Leon Russell can do no wrong — musically. He’s another fuzzy headed liberal — damn, there’s a bunch of ‘em.
The early ’70’s were one of rock’s great eras.
Especially for the Allman Brothers Band — the greatest rock band of all time! And they backed Carter!
Because they covered Elmore James’ “One Way Out”, I forgave them all their sins!

  19. Zappa says:

dude – chill out – I was not out to insult you…you are correct – it was a stupid attempt at humor :S

We are talking about a country rock band not anything important like “did dinosaurs roam the earth” or “the pope wears a funny hat”

I don’t take offense to you calling me a sychophant because I don’t believe I am – I have been called much worse (as you can imagine) now I must get back to Leon Russell’s “Beware of Darkness”.

  20. Todd B. says:

I think the song is great, but, while maybe not about politics, I think the lyrics do relate to that whole thing back in 2003. Either way, even if it is political, it’s still a great song (I could care less about political issues of either side in songs.. just as long as it’s got a good tune.).

This one, Cowboy Take Me Home, and Travelling Soldier from Home are my three favourite DC songs.

  21. Frank_D says:

BTW, for the record, I have admitted I was wrong…
Something you will never see a liberal do on this blog…

  22. Frank_D says:

you probably think the Phil Collins In the air tonight is really about his witness to a drowning&
Actually, I have no idea what that song was bout, because I didn’t, and don’t care.
But it was a nice reach for an insult. You should have stuck with “Frank lives under a rock.”
    That was just as stupid.

  23. Frank_D says:

This time, one URL = awaiting moderation.
    1) I don’t “live under a rock.”
    2) At no time, between now and the end of the world, will I take Oliver’s word for anything, without checking it out myself.
    I’m not a sycophant in “Oliver’s Army.”
    3) I was wrong, because the Dixie Chicks said so, on their website.

  24. Yeah, but Neil Young is Canadian. And he ll be dismissed more easily

Maybe. But Neil also threw his support behind right-wing deity Ronnie Raygun in the 80’s. So hopefully some heads will explode before he’s through.

Young has also lived in the U.S. for 30+ years, so it’s not as if he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

And lastly, Americans pretty much gave up the right to bitch about foreigners meddling in the affairs of other countries the moment we stepped foot in Iraq.

  25. duros62 says:

    OMG, OMG, OMG!!!!!
    Frank admitted he was wrong!!!!!

  26. TomY says:

“I m not upset about them opposing the war, merely the (IMO) cowardly and pretentious way they had of making their preferences known.”

Whether that’s true for you or not, most of the outrage was due to them being anti-Bush. Cowardly, pretentious? What the hell are you talking about? They’re performers who said some shit on stage, no different than any other non-politician using their venue to express themselves, whether it’s the pulpit, the editorial page, or the blog comment. Don’t hide behind criticizing their method — just admit most people knee jerked against the content and were stirred up by Fox News, just like any rioting cartoon protester (in spirit if not in degree).

  27. Zappa says:

I thought we had more in common musically then politically – and we can’t always have doom and gloom…

I do think God smiled on Steve Jobs when he came up with the iPod – I love shuffle…

  28. Nimrod Gently says:

“So it turns out they are just air – headed pop singers.”

Wait, where did that come from?

  29. Frank_D says:

I just bought hundreds of dollars worth of CD’s — she’ll have to wait.
But I noticed on the Amazon page, it said “people who bought this CD, also bought:
Rabbit Fur Coat ~ Jenny Lewis with The Watson Twins
    That I do have.
But in the last few years, the greatest female voice I’ve heard is from Evanescence

  30. Frank_D says:

Nimrod: They wait three years to make a song about the uproar caused by their actions?

Zappa: I can t listen to those portable thingies – walkmans, CD players, IPods, and such.
I like my music in the air , not in my ear .

  34. Bushwacked says:

Never mind the Dixie Chicks. When Bush screws up so bad he loses Merle, that’s a sign he really losing middle America.
    http://www.sanangelostandardtimes.com/sast/news_local/article/0,1897,SAST_4956_4616767,00.html
Who does he have left ?
Singers like Toby Keith. That’s not saying much unless you like “Whiskey for My Men, Beer for My Horses”.

  35. Frank_D says:

When Bush loses Merle, that s a sign Merle’s really losing middle America {Merle says as he prepares to leave the country}.
    Buh – bye, Merle.

  36. BD says:

Zappa – What do you think of Neko’s work with The New Pornographers?

I love her solo country stuff, but I really like knowing that she can rock out with the best of them.

  37. Zappa says:

The New Porrnographers have something wonderful going on with Neko singing backup. Their songs are a quirky punk pop mix – very catchy. They are a treat live (all the more so because you get to see Ms. Case in the person).
From Blown Speakers and Chump Change on their Electric Version album just make me happy when I hear them. There is not a bummer in the bunch – I have listened to Carl Newman’s solo stuff as well – recommended!
