I have found that in every case people I think of as "good people" who support Bush, regardless of their political persuasion, just aren't paying attention. They're people who don't watch the news, don't read the sections of the newspaper that matter to their lives (not the entertainment...their lives), and who don't tend to think about these things much.

One guy I know found out, for the first time, that GWB's administration was censoring scientists and preventing them from doing their job or publishing their works (NASAgate) and he was *shocked*. Absolutely shocked. I sent him about a dozen articles starting back around the energy crisis to show him that this was a habit.

He's not a Bush fan anymore.

I think that these people are numerous enough to account for 10% or so.

So we're only dealing with -2 - 6 percent stupid people. :-)

Interestingly, while Bush's numbers seem to have stabilized on Rasmussen and other polls right around historical lows from 34-39%, there are two groups whose numbers are alarming GOP strategists:

Bush's previously-untouchable support from his deep-red GOP base is dropping, from 90% to 80% to under 70% now in some polls, and

The number of people who strongly disapprove of Bush and his policies has also been steadily increasing, to over 50% of Americans now in some polls.

Bush and Cheney continue to be powerful draws at fundraisers where deep-red Republicans come with checkbooks, but GOP candidates who need to get independent or moderate votes to get elected are running away from them at every public campaign occasion.

I will be happy to watch Dems hang Bush around every GOP candidate's neck in both 2006 and 2008 like a dead albatross. They mostly owe their Elections to him, and it's only right he take them with him on his trip down to the dustbin of history.

Funny, Farris. Let's see how many Republicans get elected or re-elected in 2006 by chumming up to Dubya.

If Bush's numbers remain this low, there's no way he gets re-elected in 2008.

For the second day in a row? Another anniversary, Oliver? Oh, no!
Netromancer outlines the liberal response to dissent -- but it sounds vaguely familiar { a .pdf doc }.

"Amazingly 16% of Democrats approve of Bush. I would like to meet these Democrats and find out what exactly we can do to cure their mental disorder."

Just like the Chicoms eh? Don't agree with the outmoded 19th century ideas of Karl Marx or 'peassant communism' , then you get 'treated' for mental illness.

Is it possible for someone to disagree with you from the right and not be (a) mentally ill (b) evil or (c) stupid?

Dugger "Extensive documentary evidence makes it clear that the political use of psychiatry was much more common in China during the Cultural Revolution (1966-76) than in either the former Soviet Union or China today. During that turbulent period, the official view was that virtually all forms of mental illness were caused by politically deviant thoughts."

Zell Miller.

Rasmussen is the only polling outfit to find 16% of Dems who support Bush. Most polls have Dem support for Bush at around 8%.

"Amazingly 16% of Democrats approve of Bush. I would like to meet these Democrats and find out what exactly we can do to cure their mental disorder."

They've obviously already been lobotomized. The only effective post-lobotomy treatment is confinement in a rubber room while restrained in a straight jacket, and a strict diet of thorazine pudding.

It's not a cure, but at least they won't be able to vote.
