Go Harris!

Who says I don’t say good things about Republicans? This is two posts in a row. I want to thank Katherine Harris for sticking to her guns against the warnings of the naysayers! The latest poll has her a mere thirty percent below Senator Bill “I Went To Space” Nelson. Even though Florida went Republican in the last election, they deserve the strong and steady leadership of Senator Nelson for another six years. With Ms. Harris in the race, that seems like a slam dunk. Florida salutes you Katherine Harris, as do I.

    I’m not sure why you’re so excited about this. First of all, despite the fact that the state leans Republican, it’s not unheard of for Democrats to win statewide elections. The GOP would have had a very difficult time unseating Nelson with even the most popular GOP pol. Mel Martinez benefitted greatly from the fact that he ran in an open election and did extremely well with the Hispanic vote. If he were running against Graham were he to have run for another term, I don’t think Martinez would have won.

    So while you’re having a good time, realize that:

    A. The GOP probably already wrote off beating Nelson and are glad that Harris will spend her own money, leaving them to spend elsewhere.

    B. A win by Nelson just keeps the seat in the hands of a Democrat. It’s a push. Big deal.

    I’m not that excited about it because the seat has always been Dem. But it intrigues me because I like Katherine Harris falling flat on her face, and because this was one of the senate seats that was targeted early for being picked off and is now pretty safe. The only shaky Dem senate seat left is probably Ben Nelson, and I’m cautiously optimistic about that one (MD is a GOP pipe dream).

    BTW, only two Democratic senators have lower ADA ratings than Nelson (B Nelson and Corzine). Fla Nelson votes about like R Linc Chafee. He’s just about one of us. I predict Nelson will becoame a Lieberman non-person shortly – wiped out of the progressive history books.
