I like to call them the "mushy middle," but I do have a profound respect for how these mushy people can influence the course of history. Bill Clinton got it right in 92. He sold "change." Democrats shouldn't offer an intelligent alternative in 06 and 08, and not be soley, the "anti-Bush" party. (Although that MAY be enough to win.) We see today, Harry Reid offering an alternative Iraq strategy, even if short of specifics, it's an alternative to the failed policies of the last 4 years. When one stops to think about where the GOP has gone, since Bush was elected in 2000, it's not hard to envision a Democratic payday coming. We've got the Christian-Right, in D.C., yesterday....arguing that America is in the middle of a "cultural-war." Scary stuff. That same scary stuff that put the kibosh on the 92 GOP election when Pat Buchanan said pretty much the same thing. The thing about conservatives....eventually, their anger gets the better of them. They always manage to implode under the weight of their own intolerance. History will repeat itself. The Emperor is no longer wearing any clothes. My Professor's area of expertise and study was in voting behaviour and statistics. He worked for a few years in D.C. for the House of Representatives tracking this type of information for them. I had a couple lengthy chats with him after class about party identification as it was pertinent to a chapter we had on Voting. They were interesting conversations and one of the things I found fascinating was that historically most people when asked identified themselves as Democrats. However that didn't change the fact that we had so many Republican Presidents in recent history. Long story short it was one of those issues that baffled the Political Scientists a bit.
