Gallup: In Shift, More Americans Now Call Themselves Democrats

In a (perhaps) historic shift, more Americans now consider themselves Democrats than Republicans, the Gallup organization revealed today.

Republicans had gained the upper hand in recent years, but 33% of Americans, in the latest Gallup poll, now call themselves Democrats, with those favoring the GOP one point behind. But Gallup says this widens a bit more “once the leanings of Independents are taken into account.”

I long for the days when extra-curricular fellatio was all we had to worry about.

Republicans have ruled for 20 out of the last 28 years. During that time, we’ve had wars, recessions, a bitterly divided electorate, corruption scandals, and weapons scandals.

The eight years Democrats were in charge were marked by peace, prosperity and blowjob scandals.

I mean the American people, eventually, had to figure this out.

I’m not sure which was funnier… Trevor’s comment about longing for the good old days…

    Or Farris Gallup concerns.

They both inspired a cynical smirk though…

    Thanx!

I think it’s your logo man. Now is the time to push those tee shirts once again. It is in fact, a very cool donkey, and I would happily place that on the bumper of my car.

This is not surprising to me. What is surprising is that the identification with the Republican party surpassed identification with the Democratic party. I recently (December) finished taking a Political Science course. My Professor’s area of expertise and study was in voting behaviour and statistics. He worked for a few years in D.C. for the House of Representatives tracking this type of information for them. I had a couple lengthy chats with him after class about party identification as it was pertinent to a chapter we had on Voting. They were interesting conversations and one of the things I found fascinating was that historically most people when asked identified themselves as Democrats. However that didn’t change the fact that we had so many Republican Presidents in recent history. Long story short it was one of those issues that baffled the Political Scientists a bit.

I find it funny that Gallup, in earlier times, found more Republicans than Democrats and STILL weighted their polls to show more Dems than Reps.

Given this news, Gallup has a lot to answer for.

Just goes to show that Red State America is out of step with the realities of life in tax-paying, trend-setting, Blue State America. Their radical religious agenda is becoming more and more out of the mainstream, and scares real Americans from the heartland of America (where the people actually live, not places like Kansas).

I’m begining to think that maybe “Real America” isn’t where the Republicans keep saying it is. More and more it seems that the ideology of their Real America is completely out of touch witht he rest of the civilized world.
Unless Real America is in here.
    Party like it’s 1599, everybody!

I meant “should” offer an intelligent alternative.

All this means, is that the next Presidential election, will be about winning the hearts and minds of the 30% of the American public that doesn’t associate themselves with either party. I like to call them the “mushy middle,” but I do have a profound respect for how these mushy people can influence the course of history.

Bill Clinton got it right in 92. He sold “change.” Democrats shouldn’t offer an intelligent alternative in 06 and 08, and not be soley, the “anti-Bush” party. (Although that MAY be enough to win.) We see today, Harry Reid offering an alternative Iraq strategy, even if short of specifics, it’s an alternative to the failed policies of the last 4 years.

When one stops to think about where the GOP has gone, since Bush was elected in 2000, it’s not hard to envision a Democratic payday coming. We’ve got the Christian-Right, in D.C., yesterday….arguing that America is in the middle of a “cultural-war.” Scary stuff. That same scary stuff that put the kibosh on the 92 GOP election when Pat Buchanan said pretty much the same thing.

The thing about conservatives….eventually, their anger gets the better of them. They always manage to implode under the weight of their own intolerance.

History will repeat itself. The Emperor is no longer wearing any clothes.

Or maybe the “creamy center.” More to the point, the next election will be about winning the hearts and minds of the 30% of the American public that actually frikkin’ vote!

The Daily Show was just talking about the elections in Israel. They had their lowest voter turnout ever. Only (ONLY) 63% OF THE POPULATION!
    WTF?

I’d be more reassured if most of the Republicans I’ve known hadn’t always identified themselves as “independents.” I mean, sure they’d voted Republican in every election they’d ever participated in, but they were independents. If a Democrat ever ran on exactly the same platform as a Republican, they just might have voted for him. Probably not, though.
