Little Ben’s Pathetic Excuse

Are you serious?

Domenech said today he resigned because “if the firestorm gets past a certain level, there’s nothing you can ever say that will be taken seriously . . . It’s reached the point where there’s nothing I can really do to defend myself.”

He said most of the allegations of plagiarism, from the William & Mary student paper, were from his freshman year, and that while he believes the unattributed material was inserted by his editor, he cannot prove it. “When I was 17, I was certainly sloppy,” Domenech said. “If I had paid more attention, none of these problems would have happened.”

If you’re 17 and you don’t know copying is wrong, you’re an idiot. And who are these roaming bands of editors, willy nilly adding entire paragraphs to the words of poor conservative writers?

UPDATE: Oh God, and now he’s playing the victim and the RedStaters are lapping it up. Back to the cocoon with ya!

UPDATE: And now he’s attacking the Post. Everyone but Ben is a problem. It’s a vast conspiracy!

While I appreciated the opportunity to go and join the Washington Post, Domenech said, if they didn t expect the leftists were going to come after me with their sharpened knives, then they were fools.

  • As if the idea that editors would actually copy whole paragraphs and paste them in articles for him wasn’t ludicrous on its face, Ben’s former editor has, in fact, confirmed that Domenech is a liar.

This should seem obvious, but no one on the editorial staff was going into Salon (or wherever) and pasting whole sections into his reviews. We were more concerned about getting the paper done so we could get home at 2 in the morning instead of 5. We may have put additional words in the story, but it would never have been completely foreign content. It was just editing.

  • Racist, plagiarist, liar, coward

Finally breaking the silence of his actions, Ben Domenech has snivelled his way back to RedState to accuse liberals en masse of unwarranted abuse. More stunning, however, is his near-complete refusual to admit he is a plagiarist. I’ve wasted enough…

  • so this “blame everyone but myself” fest he’s having would be “dugger”s “another conservative voice silenced”?

what a bunch of jokes these freaks are

  • What’s amazing is that Box Turtle Ben, having been caught with his hand in the cookie jar, still refuses to man up and apologize.

He’s over at RedHateState, blaming everyone but himself and offering excuses so lame, he probably plagiarized them from Jay Caruso.

Since I’ve been perfectly accurate about this entire matter, who wants to bet BoxTurtleBen winds up with a well-paying gig at a conservative “think tank” or media outlet?

  • Box Turtle Ben:
My critics have also accused me of plagiarism in multiple movie reviews for the college paper. I once caught an editor at the paper inserting a line from The New Yorker (which I read) into my copy and protested. When that editor was promoted, I resigned. Before that, insertions had been routinely made in my copy, which I did not question. I did not even at that time read the publications from which I am now alleged to have lifted material. When these insertions were made, I assumed, like most disgruntled writers would, that they were unnecessary but legitimate editorial additions.

So according to him, the editor inserted a line to his copy, which (coincidentially) made his review EXACTLY THE SAME as a published review.

More passing the buck from the “personal responsibility” people. It gets better- check this comment!

“I knew you would step up and take responsibility for your actions, rather than blame others without admitting any misdeeds yourself. Lefties can always pretend nothing’s their fault and pass the buck, but if “conservative” means anything ethically, surely it means unflinching honesty and willingness to confront our own errors.”

BTB spent 12 paragraphs blaming everyone and everything from a college editor to his youth, and this asskissing sycophant calls liberals out for “passing the buck”

    Priceless.

  • And I’m sure he was not 17 for his entire freshman year. Just another example of him bending the truth out of convenience.

  • It’s back up now. I jumped the gun. I wonder if anything was changed in it without noting the change.

  • “If you re 17 and you don t know copying is wrong, you re an idiot.”

And what is he now, 24? Ah the wisdom one acquires with age.

  • The link to Benny boy’s response is now down. Any chance he is backpeddaling on some of his “justifications”?

  • briotopia has a copy of BTB’s resignation letter:

  • No comment that Michelle Malkin called for him to step down?

If only slick willy had the courage to step down when caught in a falsehood eh? Most of us wouldn’t care what excuse he made…

(just threw that in there to incense you lefties…One mention of clenis and your systolic blood pressure goes up twenty points…I love it..)

  • I might add that this dipshit has yet to actually admit that he did anything wrong — despite all the evidence to the contrary. He’s currently playing the victim card for all it’s worth. What character.

  • “your systolic blood pressure goes up twenty points”

Way to throw in the lingo doc! Convincing.

  • “If only slick willy had the courage to step down when caught in a falsehood eh? Most of us wouldn t care what excuse he made& ” dr. pedro

Since you like blasts from the past, can you identify this gem?

“the following proposal has evolved which the Iranians today said they wd like to discuss in detail on Saturday: — The total “package” from the Israelis wd consist of 50 HAWKs w/PIP (product improvement package) and 3300 basic TOWs. — Deliveries wd commence on or about 12 December as follows:
    H hr: 1 707 w/300 TOWs = 1 AMCIT
    H+10hrs: 1 707 (same A/C) w/300 TOWs = 1 AMCIT
    H+16hrs: 1 747 w/50 HAWKs & 400 TOWs = 2 AMCITs
    H+20hrs: 1 707 w/300 TOWs = 1 AMCIT
    H+24hrs: 1 747 w/2000 TOWs = French Hostage”

Take a chill pill yourself, doc.

  • Oh, and if you didn’t know Doc, AMCIT is shorthand for “American citizen.”

  • Sorry, I thought you could do html on this site. The guy’s name was Steve Kangas, http://www.post-gazette.com/regionstate/19990314suicide1.asp. You can read his paper at http://www.aliveness.com/kangaroo/CIAtimeline.html.

You can read about my ordeal at http://www.indybay.org/news/2006/03/1806390.php.

  • Yep, you got ‘im fair and square on the plagiarism charge. Here ’s his latest redstate post:

“I want to apologize to National Review Online, my friends and colleagues here at RedState, and to any others that have been affected over the past few days. I also want to apologize to my previous editors and writers whose work I used inappropriately and without attribution. There is no excuse for this – nor is there an excuse for any obfuscation in my earlier statement.

I hope that nothing I’ve done as a teenager or in my professional life will reflect badly on the movement and principles I believe in.

I’m deeply grateful for the love and encouragment of all those around me. And although I may not deserve such support, it makes it that much more humbling at a time like this. I’m a young man, and I hope that in time that I can earn a measure of the respect that you have given me.

    Regards,

    Ben”

Congratulations. I wonder what made him do it? It’s weird that most of the allegations I’ve read concern movie reviews. Movie reviews are easy to write, the only reson I can think of why a writer would plagiarize a review is that they never bothered to see the film.
Because I vote republican I just can’t this comment on plagiarism without writing the name . . . Joe Biden! Don’t want y’all to think plagiarism is a GOP signature crime.

  • “There is no excuse for this – nor is there an excuse for any obfuscation in my earlier statement.”

Awesome. Ben got found out as a plagarist and then “obfuscated” about it. Then resigned. What courage. What character. What an idiot.

  • Like I said, I will take a resignation and obfuscation over dragging in the justice department, impeachment “wag the dog” wars and staying in office and apologizing any day…..
The guy did the right thing, maybe the lefties will take a lesson from it….it is a theme with us “wingers”….

  • “The guy did the right thing, maybe the lefties will take a lesson from it& ”

Ya, after he got caught. Great lesson for the kiddies. And Pedro, WTF is the Clinton connection here? This guy wasn’t under oath and doesn’t have the power to order a war. As far as I can see he did do everything within his power to avoid responsibility, including letting his friends and colleagues go to bat for him even though he knew he was in the wrong. Nice.

  • Congratulations. I wonder what made him do it?

Probably the fact that the National Review, his former school paper, and P.J. O’Rourke himself all refuted everything he said about them in his previous statement- you know, the one where he said he did absolutely nothing wrong and it was all their doing.

Whatever. He apologized, and managed to do in a shorter amount of time than he was actually a Post blogger, so good for him on that. Admitting the problem is the first step toward recovery, so maybe it’ll be a wakeup for the RedState loonies as well. I never imagined an incident like this where Michelle Malkin comes out looking like the rational one.
