Diehard Amish and Socialist Workers Party types on the march don't inspire fear in the ruling class. They look impotent and meaningless. Protests were effective when masses of marchers *scared the shit* out of the ruling class-- before riot control technology and tactics and communication technology, in the days when any sufficiently large crowd could turn into a revolutionary mob. Basically: up until the 1970's. Not so anymore. Nowadays the only thing that talks is money. Don't bother going to a protest. Instead, work an extra job, and send your paycheck to insurgent progressive candidates and to MoveOn and DFA. Or volunteer on a campaign.
