Nobody is more shocked and outraged by the arrest of Claude Allen that the president himself. Allen, for those who do not know, was arrested after receiving refunds for more than $5,000 worth of merchandise he did not buy.

The Target Loss Prevention Manger contacted Montgomery County Police and through the police investigation it was learned that Allen had been receiving refunds in an amount exceeding $5,000 during last year. Some of the fraudulent returns were made at Target stores and some at Hecht¹s stores. He would buy items, take them out to his car, and return to the store with the receipt. He would select the same items he had just purchased, and then return them for a refund. Allen is known to have conducted approximately 25 of these types of refunds, having the money credited to his credit cards.”

Senior Administration Official Resigns

Claude Allen, President Bush’s principal domestic policy advisor, has resigned. A White House spokesman told the Chicago Tribune that Allen wanted to spend more time with his family.
Republicans who know Allen are uncertain why he stepped down so suddenly. Late last week, he was in good spirits as he briefed allies and surrogates about the President’s State of the Union message. On Tuesday, he attended a conference in PA on the president’s faith based initiative.”

Claude Alexander Allen, age 45, of the 7200 block of Cliff Pine Drive in Gaithersburg, was charged with theft scheme over $500 and theft over $500. He was released on his own recognizance.”

At least the arrest happened after he resigned! Do you think he informed his superiors about his ‘troubles’ earlier? Or maybe the police informed them that a White House staffer with access to the POTUS was under investigation for Grand Theft? Considering the depth of analysis and followup they do in foreign policy and Homeland Security probably not. And If you believe that you’re pathetically unaware. This whole thing was stretched out for deniability. The issue is the level of judgement and vetting done by this ‘I’ve got a friend whose son needs a job’ administration. This guy was in charge of coordinating the Bush administration’s Katrina response for Christ’s sake.

Um, that’s not what I said. Lewinsky was a scandal in the same way that this is a scandal: someone in a position of trust and authority broke the law. Jay C. doesn’t seem to get that.

And Pedro, no one said the guy was guilty. Just being charged with a crime is a scandal.

Of course in Allen, we get a two-fer. First, he’s a Repug–part of the AWOL George administration that swore they’d bring honor and dignity back to the WH. Second, he’s part and parcel of the religious right wing extremists that back this illegitimate administration; Allen is out there telling America its problems are because we’re not Christian enough–that we’re too tolerant of gays and the like—even as he’s standing in the return line at Target waiting to commit another crime.

Can anyone here repudiate that statement?
