Great source for you:
There is a general fear and anxiety surrounding adolescent sexuality. The question is why? Must we fear adolescent sexuality? This question, the title of the following article, is one that Amy Schalet, PhD, has spent the past decade investigating. It has culminated in a masterful doctoral thesis and a book to be published by the University of Chicago Press in 2006. More specifically, Dr. Schalet has asked how is it that 2 countries similar in terms of wealth, education, and reproductive technologies have had the highest and lowest rates of teen pregnancy, respectively, in the Western world. The countries, of course, are the United States and the Netherlands, and the answer has surely been illuminated by her sociological inquiry into the construction of adolescence and sexuality within the white, moderately religious or secular middle class of the 2 countries–the sector of the population that in both countries has a dominant influence on healthcare, education, politics, and the media. In a series of articles for Medscape General Medicine, Dr. Schalet will discuss the results of her research. In this first article she shows us that the construction of adolescent sexuality is an active process of dramatization in one society and normalization in the other. Ultimately, the results of her research suggest a course of action for the American healthcare profession as it regards adolescent healthcare.

Good discussion;
I detected a general thematic tone to the comments in general responding to your urging education of children.
Although I have not researched the data on this I believe it is very much
a holdover from the Fifties and Sixties before the sexual revolution.
Sexuality is a powerful force and containing it is no easy task.
When it is pent up, or stored it must vent itself in some other form.
Violence often attends when sexual frustration peaks.
The fear that youngsters will be empowered to experiment with
sex because they were taught about it might have some basis
with small numbers of kids. But the emerging sexuality and
role and identity issues that arise at puberty don’t need to be
exacerbated by lack of information. Far more damage is done
by withholding information than by dispensing it. Kids also need
to feel they can discuss with an adult, preferably the parent, and
that climate of openness beats the fearful approach anyday.
BW;
You hit it. It is definitely the reality vs unreality syndrome.
Semant, the gun analogy was enough for me:
“Sex education in schools is the sexual equivalent of giving a kid a loaded gun. Sooner or later, someone is going to get hurt, maybe killed. Giving the kid a gun and then telling him or her not to use it isn’t as effective as not giving them the gun in the first place.”
They already have the “weapons”, albeit still in development. However, you are correct, the ignorance is bliss mindset of the 50’s and 60’s is very obvious here. Somehow they believe if the protect their children from reality the “bad” things just wont happen.
“I find the gun analogy hilarious because their using gun ownership as an example of the danger of something Sex education in schools is the sexual equivalent of giving a kid a loaded gun. Sooner or later, someone is going to get hurt, maybe killed. Giving the kid a gun and then telling him or her not to use it isn t as effective as not giving them the gun in the first place.
So… they’re in favor of gun control then?
Things I learned in handgun class:
Always treat a gun as if it were loaded.
Separate the ammunition from the gun, lest the bullets shoot somewhere they shouldn’t.
Never take out your gun and point it unless you intend to shoot.
Corrollary: You shouldn’t just whip out your gun for any old reason.
Your gun is about protecting your life, not material things.
Know what’s in front of you– beyond the immediate target, what are the long term consequences of firing your gun?
Keep control of your gun at all times.
Now why would anyone be against teaching people stuff like that?
Something relevant that I read in a sig: “Never argue with the insane. They will only drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.”
I can’t believe they started off the discussion as to why Planned Parenthood doesn’t provide contraceptives. Uh..duh a quick visit to their website would have told you that they do. What morons. And of course “there’s no evidence that educating kids about sex and contraceptives will reduce teen pregnancy”. Um yeah, what about the lower teen pregnancy rates in Europe? And why do the blue states have lower teen pregnancy rates than the red states? Hmmm, could it be that comprehensive sex education works in Europe and the blue states? No, it’s only a coincidence, that doesn’t prove anything.
