The Dirty Bomb Scenario
Tweet
(APReuters) — At first people thought the smell was a simple gas leak of some sort, but mere moments after the odor overwhelmed the lunchtime crowd in downtown Baltimore, it became clear that this was something much worse. Almost simultaneously thousands of gallons of irradiated materials were exploded in “dirty bombs” in major American cities including Baltimore, New York, Miami, and Philadelphia. Hundreds died in the initial blast, with the death toll expected to number in the thousands as the numerous radiation-infested clouds sweep across America.
“We never saw it coming”, said President Bush in a press release issued from what sources close to the administration describe as a “secure” location, “I have appointed Vice President Cheney to head up an elite task force to investigate who exactly was asleep at the wheel during this tragedy.”
The information was preliminary, but experts have already mapped the sites of all the dirty bombs to be in close proximity to ports recently put under the control of the United Arab Emirates, a middle east nation with some ties to Al Qaeda terrorism. “It’s pretty easy to connect the dots,” said Philip Granger, a chemical weapons expert who consults with the Department of Homeland Security, “once they took over the ports, it was child’s play to get these bombs inside the border. Positioning them was a bit tougher, but once they were on American shores they became ticking time bombs.”

Pfft! Fiction can’t be any more scary than reality these days.
Time for some real leadership: Shake the pillars of heaven: Burton & Wang in 2008!
Very good indeed Oliver,I don’t know if it will hold but even ole Frist came out against this one,I mean they fund terrorism and a couple of the 9/11 bombers
they allowed nuclear devices from Pakistan into Iran and North Korea. This is a little of info. we have on the U.A.E,it seems that Bush has finally sank to a new low and now threatened a veto against I might add a lot of his own party, that is some of his best worshipers,I could be wrong but I believe the right wing might have made a few phone calls today. This takeover of our ports by U.A.E.,can not be defended yet he persists, basically telling his own party to take a hike, hail king George!!!
Oliver,
Whilst I agree with the thrust of your argument against foreigners not guarding one’s borders and ports, the whole effectiveness of the dirty bomb as a weapon is severely exaggerated. Those not actually caught by the actual blast are very unlikely to sustain any radiological damage. That said, if you have untrustworthy people guarding the ports a proper nuke could feasibly be deployed….
HA HA HA HA HA HA!

No, but once a nation with terror ties, always a nation with terror ties.
No, but once a nation with terror ties, always a nation with terror ties.
I guess its time to bomb Iran, then.
Because all people from the Middle East just simply must be terrorists.
Can somebody rational please explain to me how the Coast Guard and Customs will not be running our security, whether or not this goes through ?
Yeah, the real tragedy here is that now there might be some weak spots in port security, whereas presently port security is like a damn steel trap.
nudnik: didn’t know we were giving Iran control of our ports.
JD: I think the coast guard/customs have enough on their plates without also having to worry about this Dubai company also being involved.
A silly scenario. It assumes that port security would be the responsibility of the operational contractr rather than the entity that owns the property. The ports have already been operated by foreign nationals. We lose no jursidiction at all of the property.
Your argument and that of some conservatives (actually a lot) boils down to: we are OK with Brits but we don’t like them Ay-rabs. And you guys were berating Ann Coulter for her ‘raghead’ comment.
Strange bedfellows us all.
Dugger
Oliver plays the fear card. Whoda thunk it? And the race card for that matter.
Yeah, Oliver…this is really bizarre to see coming from you. There’s wariness and then there’s paranoia, and this crosses that line without looking back.
I suppose it wouldn’t really happen, though, because all we’d have to do is torture somebody until they told us where the bomb was. And then Jack Bauer could disarm it.
It was only a matter of time before opponents to this were called racists. Severe projection, if you ask me, given the fact that the Iraq War was enabled by tapping into the anti-arab/muslim bigotry of many war supporters. You can’t claim that “they attacked us on 9/11″ to justify war in Iraq or racial profiling, then call others racist for voicing concerns about whether the UAE should be involved in this.
I’m not sure where I stand on this, but I am damn sure that Iraq War supporters have no credibility on this issue.
Yea, I forgot, it’s fear mongering when someone OTHER than Bush does it. For shame, Oliver, for shame…
Is this really the best you guys can come up with? You see nothing wrong with a terror-connected state dealing with our most vulnerable import/export point? They could be green people for all I care, but Baltimore is just up a ways from me and I’ll be damned if a country who seems to be so blase towards them will control our ports.
Not slick at all OW. “Terror connected state”. What in the hell is that. Are terrorists from that state. Have terrorists gotten funds from individuals in that state? If so, we are a terror connected state, so is Britain.
And you do FULLY MISunderstand. They will not ‘control’ our ports. They will manage the port operation. The company doing this is labelled Dubai but it is the British company that did the job before and had been purchased by Dubai. Security and cargo inspection is in the hands of the Coast Gurad/US government/local authorities. Other than that a few guys running around in suits may be employed by Dubai and a few (pull your tighty-whities snug!) may be Arabs, so what?
Dugger, Admit it, More Bush hate on the left here (and xenophobia on the right)
Dugger : You, of all people, should know that those pesky little things otherwise referred to as facts will not get in the way of Oliver being totally and completely wrong about most topics.
Oliver : The Coast Guard and Customs do those jobs right now, you dumb ass. Will that change with the transfer of ownership of this British company? Not one single solitary bit.
