Drawing The Line

Martin O’Malley on Bush’s sellout of our ports

Baltimore Mayor Martin O’Malley says, “We want to turn over the Port of Baltimore, the home of the Star Spangled Banner, to the United Arab Emirates? Not so long as I’m mayor and not so long as I have breath in my body.”

Amen.

And all these trolls think they have the market on playing poltics with balls? Please! Good for O’Malley. Being that Bush is a narcissist, he does not care about the Republican party nor the American people, much less the Democratic party. I can’t wait for people to start defending this idiocy. Narcissists should not be trusted to run this country.

  2. Hedley says:

Does the Mayor know that the Port of Baltimore is already run by the British?

If I understand correctly, the ports are already run by a British company P&O, which is in the process of being bought out by a UAE firm. It is up to the President to basically bless the sale and I assume if he does not, the P&O contract would not pass to the UAE firm, likely (again, I am assuming)killing the sale of P&O.

If this is correct, then to say that the President is selling out our ports would not be accurate as they have long since been sold out. Rather, this is an anti-Arab issue (and, perhaps, rightly so if there is a compromise in security).

More importantly, this means that if the contract goes to halliburton or Bechtel, we can expect applause from the denizens of the Left, right?

  4. White Whale says:

Misdirected bootlicking? Oh you guys are good! I don’t see how we sell our ports out to any other nation period, but that is just me. I forget how the British support terrorism? This British company is doing a disservice by allowing this to happen. This UAE “company” is controled by the government in UAE! The sad part is that the cons on this site don’t understand that Bush doesnt care about conservative values and quite frankly the Republican party. Any conservative worth thier salt would disagree with this idiocy. However sadly we do have some who would rather love a narcissist(who doesn’t love them back) than to actually love our country.

Oliver, come on …… you are the one who gets on these crappy phrases all the time.

  6. drpedro says:

So whale, in this case it is ok to profile by a companies race/ethnicity?

I am just trying to get a handle on the lefty philosophy and its
    (in)consistency

  7. White Whale says:

Huh? And this adresses my point how? This has nothing to do with thier race, though I can only speculate that you wish Dem’s were anti-Arabic and this is fueling thier opposition.

  8. drpedro says:

Dugger stop with that crazy talk!

Don’t you know these guys are Aaarabs? They live in the middle east?

Shoot, we don’t need a better reason than that to boycott them!

Dr. P , uncomfortable with the bizzaro world of the liberal, where some racism is ok……

  9. Dugger says:

    WW, Cool down.

Are you saying there are no legitimate reasons to support the contract as proposed? What if secuirty measures are written in to it. What if the contract is not for ownership but just for operation of the port and the facility is leased. What if the local governments still have complete authority over the facility? What if the Dubai entity has operated port facilities in other areas with no problem. What if no other entity other than the Dubai entity is interested in the contract? What if the government of Dubai is judged as an ally in the WOT?

  11. Bushwacked says:

Common sense would seem to be that it is not a good idea for ANY foreign government or company to be operating something as sensitive as our seaports, anymore than we would want them running the security of our airports, period.

And apparently Bush didn’t even know about the deal until it was already approved by his administration. Whew, what a relief. That makes me feel sooooo much safer! http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11494815/

  12. Dugger says:

    BW,

Common sense might also tell you that if the market has moved this way, there must be a dollar and cents decision for it being as it is. And why necessarily do we care who manages our port operation if we own and controla ccess to the land, handle security, inspect the cargo and get a better deal in doing so (so the market says). I mean, is there some other reason than generally not liking Arabs running the operation of the port. (nobody complained when it was other foreign entities).

Dugger, My Life-Long Bud and Bestest pal ever, Jimmy “misery index’ Carter, says its the right thing to do

  13. White Whale says:

Pointless. The cons on this site desperately want this to be a race issue, but in my opinion it doesn’t matter if they are British, Pakastani, CHinese, etc…. We aught to control our ports completely. As for “nobody complained when it was other foreign entities”, Dugger does have a point, but is grabbing at straws. If I knew about the British I would have said that its bullshit. Hmm… wasn’t it Kerry who harped on this issue, and Bush decided to change the subject at any cost? Most on this site should have caught Washington Journal on C-SPAN. Seems nobody can defend this issue adequately.
