Cheney: Uncle

11:02 am EST February 15th, 2006 | Politics | 38 Comments

CNN reports that Dead-Eye Dick will be talking about his accident sometime today (probably a softball interview on Fox, I bet).

UPDATE: Yep, he’s talking to Brit Hume. It’s good to have a propaganda outlet in times like these.

  1. The only reason Cheney is talking now is because the man had a heart attack. But go ahead, sip more kool-aid.

  2. TomY says:

Fox News on sunday night was just laughing it up about the incident. So humourous. Whittington just got PEPPERED! Can you believe those wacky hijincks! Just like on Jackass! Back to you, Shep!

  3. Semanticleo says:

This is not about the accident. It is about the way this Admin likes to
control/manipulate information. Get over apologies made/not made.

  4. …on FOXNEWS? Fudge. Only I didn’t say “fudge.”

FOXNEWS really lost me when they had the flying eagle shooting missiles from under its wings in 2003. Comics are great when they’re on ink and paper and all melodramatic… they suck in real life, though.

    …FOXNEWS?!

  5. JD says:

This is a perfect example of what I described in a prior thread. Oliver and his ilk as so disingenuous in their calls for a public acknowledgement of this matter. As I predicted, which was along the lines of predicting that the sun will set this evening, Oliver does not really want a public acknowledgement, unless he gets to write the script, select the messenger, etc … The only person VP Cheney is responsible to in this matter is the injured party.

  6. Frank_D says:

Think of the left wing’s uncomfortable silence, when the Vice – President comes forward with an apology, and a plausible explanation for the delay in reporting the incident to the press.

Of course, then there will be “questions” about why he delayed his explanation of the delay.

    You lefties crack me up.

  7. Actually, I didn’t care if Cheney came out and talked about this. I never said he should, and I’m frankly surprised he cracked so quick.

  8. frameone says:

I don’t think there’s any kind of conspiracy going on behind the delay in reporting the incident or Ceheney’s delay in making a personal public statement. I think it just shows, again, how incompetent these people are because of the ideological straight jackets they’ve bound themselves up in. Even a junior level PR hack knows that you have to get in front of a story, get your side out first and hammer away at it against all comers. But that doesn’t just mean straight spin. You have to humanize your client to build sympathy which is what public statements are all about. Nothing does that faster and better than accepting responsibility, expressing regret and hoping for the best. And I’m not talking about insincerity. I’m talking about what you have to do especially when your guy is sincere. Instead, the VP and his staff are so obsessed with maintaing a paritcular, ideologically determined image of the VP that they went into panic mode instead of what should have been standard PR procedure mode.

  9. frameone says:

Everybody knows that, to do this right, Cheney has to go on Oprah.

  10. JK says:

OW…any chance you can use the power of the blogosphere to organize a “Wear Orange Day” in honor of the Vice-President?

Of course, we now hear that the poor Mr. Whittington has had a heart attack, because some of the Vice-President’s buckshot has entered his heart. Not anything funny about that. If that were my Dad, I’d be very upset at the guy who shot him. Accident, or not.

    JK

  11. JD says:

So frameone’s biggest problem with this is the fact that the PR people for Cheney were not up to his standards? You should be happy about that.

Simple fact is that the left has made this out to be some kind of grand conspiracy, in some cases attempting to imply that there was some kind of criminal action here, or that alcohol played a role.

The left is simply using this as yet another excuse to bash Cheney and try to make some political hay out of it.

  12. rainlion says:

JD – sorry, but the last time I checked… shooting someone was indeed potentially criminal. Not reporting said incident in a timely manner is certainly criminal – as Jayson Blair found out when his driver was “accidentally shot in the head” with a shotgun, and no one thought it necessary to call the cops until the next day.

Drinking involved? If so, again – criminal behavior.

All Cheney had to do was issue a quick statement publically acknowledging the incident, and his culpability shortly thereafter… and none of this would be an issue.

But no, he opted to not call the cops, not inform the public… and confab with his lawyers.

    Get over it.

  13. Leroy Brown says:

Dude, there was a criminal action. He was hunting without the proper license. I’m not saying he should be sent to Siberia, but it is a crime.

As for why we’re keeping up with this, I love it because it is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard. A VP who’s constantly angry, loves big weapons and talking about what others shouldn’t do shot someone? Are you telling me that you didn’t at least have a “WTF?” moment when you heard? If you didn’t, then I can only conclude you are a soulless robot.

  14. Hedley says:

    Hardly a crime.

Statement by the Office of the Vice President

    © 2006 WorldNetDaily.com

It has been brought to the Vice President’s attention by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department this afternoon that, although he had acquired a 125 dollar Texas non-resident season hunting license, he lacked a 7 dollar stamp for hunting upland game birds. To address any questions about the licensing:

    – A member of the Vice President’s staff wrote a check for 140 dollars understanding that this would purchase a Texas non-resident season hunting license that would permit the Vice President to hunt quail in Texas. It appears now that the license itself cost 125 dollars, and an extra 15 dollars covered the cost of a Federal migratory bird stamp. The Vice President did not need the Federal stamp, as he already possessed one.

    – The staff asked for all permits needed, but was not informed of the 7 dollar upland game bird stamp requirement.

    – Because the requirement is new, the Department has informed us that it is issuing warnings, and the Vice President expects to receive one. He will take whatever steps are needed to comply with applicable rules.

    – In the meantime, the Vice President has sent a 7 dollar check to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, which is the cost of an upland game bird stamp.

  15. Jadegold says:

Sorry, Frankie, but Britt Hume–that liberal pinko–said Cheney admitted to having a beer.

Of course, most folks pulled over for DWIs also claim to only having a glass of wine with dinner.

  16. Jadegold says:

    JD is consistently wrong.

He argued long that Cheney hadn’t been drinking. We now find that Cheney had been hitting the sauce. Additionally, I suspect somebody’s who has had 4 heart attacks is probably on a number of medications that don’t mix too well with booze.

And what is JD wrong about today?

The only person VP Cheney is responsible to in this matter is the injured party.

Not quite. A drunken man with a shotgun blasts someone? I can think of several criminal charges.

  17. lawguy says:

well living in southeastern ohio, i can understand — i think it is required to drink heavily and shoot at anything that moves to be able to hunt deer. at least where i live.

  18. Quaker in a Basement says:

Wonkette reported it removed from MSNBC

And now replaced, along with an account of how Cheney’s spokesman tried to finesse the issue and mislead the reporter.

  19. Frank_D says:

Youi mean this?: “There may be a beer or two in there, but remember not everyone in the party was shooting.”. …
Wonkette reported it removed from MSNBC (you thank may be because it was unconfirmed?)

  20. Frank_D says:

We now find that Cheney had been hitting the sauce.
    We did?

  21. Frank_D says:

JadeMold’s logic: Most folks pulled over for DWI’s also “claim to only having a glass of wine with dinner” (Not true, but let’s go on.)
Cheney admitted to having a beer.
Ergo, Cheney was “hitting the sauce.”

I presume you learned logic at that military academy you attended.

  22. scratch says:

    Rainlion…

All Cheney had to do was issue a quick statement publically acknowledging the incident, and his culpability shortly thereafter& and none of this would be an issue.

Um, yeah, right. No, of course it wouldn’t be an issue. Nope.

Also, please tell me where you got your information about the alcohol involvement, unless it involved pulling it out of your ass, in which case I don’t want to know.

  23. JK says:

Day 3. The Vice President of the United States, shot a man. The man he shot, had a hear attack. 36 hours later, the Vice President breaks his silence.

Dugger, Jay, Dr. Putz, and Funky Frank continue to make excuses for him.

    You’re pathetic people.

    End of story. Disgusting.

    JK

  24. scratch says:

    JK…

Is your problem with this episode the fact that Cheney accidently shot someone while hunting, or that nobody told the press for almost 24 hours?

  25. Frank_D says:

I’m not making excuses for him, JK the The Tin Foil Hat Man, you’re making up stories about it, and you expect us to be all exercized about it.

As Ahnold might say (from Kindergaten Cop) “Scandal?” “It isn’t a scandal!”

Besides, Sen Charles “Sleazy” Schumer has provided you with your adjective: “Troubling”

    Now, think as you’re told!

  26. scratch says:

    Rainlion…

last time I checked& shooting someone was indeed potentially criminal. Not reporting said incident in a timely manner is certainly criminal

You should notify the authorities in the county where this took place, and let them know that you think they have a crime to investigate. Because so far their public statements indicate that they think there was no crime. Give them your facts and let’s get this cleared up.

Also, I’m not a lawyer, so perhaps you could explain to me: when something must be “reported” (not like an accidental shooting while hunting, which according to the sheriff in this county is not a required report,) does that refer to notifying the press? You know, telling the “reporters.” Is that how that works?

  27. JD says:

“JD – sorry, but the last time I checked& shooting someone was indeed potentially criminal. Not reporting said incident in a timely manner is certainly criminal – as Jayson Blair found out when his driver was accidentally shot in the head with a shotgun, and no one thought it necessary to call the cops until the next day.”

Sorry, but that is flat out BS. The Secret Service had already spoken with the local County Sheriff, and had arranged to meet the following morning.

“He argued long that Cheney hadn t been drinking. We now find that Cheney had been hitting the sauce.”

Having a beer at lunch, almost seven hours before this incident occurred falls woefully short of hitting the sauce.

“Not quite. A drunken man with a shotgun blasts someone? I can think of several criminal charges”

If that is true, you should have no difficulty in proving that to us. Until then, it is nothing other than pure unadulterated horse manure.

JK attempts to show that people are making excuses for VP Cheney, when in fact, that is not what is happening. An accident occurred. VP Cheney publically accepted responsibility for it on TV today, and likely immediately accepted responsibility for it with the injured party at the scene. All the people on the right are doing is pointing out the incredibly flawed “potential” theories that the moonbats keep throwing out there.

  28. Quaker in a Basement says:

or that nobody told the press for almost 24 hours?

Or the President. Or his press secretary.

Nothing fishy here, folks. Go about your business.

  29. midderpidge says:

He had one *ahem* beer for lunch. He later shot a guy. He immediately mixed a drink. A deputy was turned away from interviewing Dick that night. He has a history of DUIs.

    He was drunk.

  30. Bushwacked says:

Think of the left wing s uncomfortable silence, when the Vice – President comes forward with an apology, and a plausible explanation for the delay in reporting the incident to the press.

Frank, you should apply at Fox News. Your certainly as qualified as Neil Cavuto.

  31. Frank_D says:

midderpidge: your lack of knowledge of drinking and drunkenness is astounding.

Bushwacked: That’s right. I am, and you’re not. But I don’t want his job, I’ll settle for his ties.

  32. JSA says:

“The left is simply using this as yet another excuse to bash Cheney and try to make some political hay out of it.”

How much hay did Republicans get out of Michael Dukakis’ riding in the tank or John Kerry’s windsurfing? It’s the not the incident per se but the perception it generates that’s important. The shooting was an accident. Perhaps criminal negligence was involved, perhaps not. But the perception is growing that the Vice President is more a dimestore cowboy than a real one.

  33. midderpidge says:

    Frank D, amen to that.

With that infomercial, I am sure we can now put the matter completely to rest.

  34. Frank_D says:

midderpidge: we can put it to rest whenever the left (read “press”) is ready.

    A week, tops

  35. buma says:

The pollyanna wingers posting here seem to believe Shotgun Cheney had only a single beer, hours before the incident. Whatta loada crap.

  36. Bushwacked says:

Geez Frank, take a chill pill. Your opinion counts no more or no less than mine or anyone else. And in the end that’s all that matters.

  37. Frank_D says:

buma: I’m glad you found a blogger you agree with.
