<i>What he said to his friend has nothing to do with public policy, nothing to do with his office, and despite your desire to know what he said, it is none of your damned business</i>

How come he didn't get the answer I got? It's obvious, Paul, that you wait for me to post so you can fire on me.

You are really coming off as a class - A asshole.

Are you a really tough guy? Because, if you're not, unless you save this attitude strictly for keyboard commando tactics, you must be getting your ass kicked on a regular basis.

I know we've been through this nonsense about how you don't respect me, so you feel free to continually barrage me with insults, but there's a saying about holding on to resentments: It's like peeing in your pants: the only one who feels it is you.

Get help, Paul. Soon

The imagery simply oozes penis envy. My gravatar shows the hamster

link in the unholy alliance.

"Your link was referencing the hunt that I referenced, the one in December 2003 in Pennsylvania. Is there any evidence the one in Texas was similar?"

Oops. I was posting from work on and off all day today and didn't check the dateline. Clearly, he didn't have a problem with taking all the sport out of it in the past, maybe he's changed his mind. I'm willing to give the guy the benefit of the doubt that he was actually hunting this time.

But listen, the apology thing is not necessarily some kind of partisan attack on Cheney (that was the gay comment, explained below for the slow witted). It's absolutely bizarre that, in this day and age, Cheney's office hasn't responded with a statement about his feelings on the incident. I'm not looking for some kind of mea culpa, just the standard boiler plate: "The Vice President regrets the incident and expressed his regret to his good friend who said, no big deal." Whatever, totally innocous crap that celebrities and noteworthy people issue all the time when the screw up. In this case, a personal statement from Cheney's office ends the specualtion and, here's the bonus, humanizes Cheney, a guy who could do with a PR make over right about now. A public statement of regret is a win win for the Veep. That is unless you are absolutely batshit terrified that a public apology will make you look weak. Which is what brings us to the gay comment.

Bush/Cheney O4 and its minions did everything they could to code Kerry as an effeminate, Frenchified wuss. The cheap shots over his hunting style was just one attack in a long series of veiled assertions to suggest that Kerry wasn't man enough for the job. By contrast Bush/Cheney, supported by the media, painted themselves as the codpiece twins: dick swinging, macho terrorist killers who knew how to carry a gun and "work" a ranch. Bush/Cheney's more mushed brained supporters like Frank and Dugger swallow this macho image hook line and sinker because so much of their own identities as men depends so heavily on a slavish idolatry of authoritarian daddy figures, cowboys preferred. Now we have a situation in which, Cheney's own rhetoric has backed him into a corner where any public statement of regret or apology threatens the whole macho, tough guy facade. And if Cheney's facade crumbles so to does the macho facade of his supporters. That's why the White House, and you guys in turn, are so damn defensive about what was only accident. But god forbid that Vice President should be fallible or vulnerable or, worse yet, sorry. That would bring the whole damn thing crashing down.

Dana;

It is bolonius kerfluffle unless you see the consistency of the behaviors
as symbolic of the WH state of mind.

What we are discussing is not some accident which is only news because
the Veep is the perp; rather it is about the handling, and I mean the
Micro-Managing of the information, as any group run by control freaks
would.

I guess it wouldn t bother Dana and most wingnuts that the pResident would appoint his own brother for the 2nd highest office in the country.</blockquote>

Actually what it means is that it would be intensely amusing to see the contortions of rage the leftists would have to see another member of the Bush family moving toward the presidency. :)

I'd rather there was another Republican, other than Jeb Bush, elected President in 2008, because this is a republic, not a monarchy. But if it were a choice between Jeb Bush and virtually any Democrat of current note, I'd vote for Mr Bush.

Actually, the most natural reaction in the world would have been for Mr Cheney to have run up to Mr Whittington and said, "Oh, man, I'm sorry!" It's about as certain as anything could be that that happened, and that would be far more genuine than any apology given for the benefit of the press.

Had I posted on my own website about his issue, I'd have had to create a new filing category: kerfuffles, because while this issue is serious on a personal level, it's trifling as a national political issue.

frameone, you're really reaching for excuses to call me a moron, aren't you? I must really piss you off. Are you sure you don't think I killed your dog?

Let's go over it again, shall we?

An apology? What? A <i>public</i> apology? For <i>you</i>? You are delusional. [emphasis added - fd]

Get it? I was saying, to the average reader (not you, apparently), that for you to require a public apology, or, for that matter, public information to the effect that there was an apology, was a rather grandiose demand.

Anyway, you can always call me a moron again, after my next comment, but surely this bitterness and resentment is wearing you down a little, isn't it?

"public information to the effect that there was an apology, was a rather grandiose demand."

It isn't a grandiose demand. It's human interest basic to any story of this nature. We heard about Russel Crowe's apology when he hit that hotel clerk:
<a href="http://www.femalefirst.co.uk/celebrity/44682004.htm" rel="nofollow"><a href="http://www.femalefirst.co.uk/celebrity/44682004.htm" rel="nofollow">http://www.femalefirst.co.uk/celebrity/44682004.htm</a></a>

What, the VP can't release a statement saying he's sorry it happened? He can't have a PR flack come out say "The Vice President met with his firend and victim and apologized for the incident"? Come on man, it's like standard PR practice. Use your brain you idiot.

"Exactly how is it that you know he has not done so?"

But that's exactly it. I don't. I'd like to now what he said as a matter of public interest.
As for the style of "hunt":

"The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported today that 500 farm-raised pheasants were released yesterday morning at the Rolling Rock Club in Ligonier Township for the benefit of Cheney's 10-person hunting party. The group killed at least 417 of the birds, illustrating the unsporting nature of canned hunts. The party also shot an unknown number of captive mallards in the afternoon."

frameone : Your link was referencing the hunt that I referenced, the one in December 2003 in Pennsylvania. Is there any evidence the one in Texas was similar?

Is that if you voted for Bush / Cheney you are gay thing supposed to be some kind of put down ? Thought you leftists were the tolerant bunch ...

What he said to his friend has nothing to do with public policy, nothing to do with his office, and despite your desire to know what he said, it is none of your damned business.

I think I know why the wingnuts here are so defensive about this. If it turns out that Bush and Cheney aren't authentic he-men it means that every guy who voted for them is actually gay.

Ha....."the administration that couldn't shoot straight." Good one.

In that sense, Cheney's actions serve as perfect symbolism for the last 8 years.

Sometimes, truth is indeed stranger the fiction.

As OW said in his opening salvo..

"The Vice-President shot a Guy."

What more is there to say?

Oh man you guys are defensive about this. Frank, I didn't ask for a personal apology you moron. I just want to know if Cheney is the kind of stand up guy who apologizes after making such a grievous error or if he is, as so many of his sycophantic supporters seem to be, the kind of guys who shoots someone and then blames the victim. It's a question of character, you remember that thing Republicans used to go on and on about?

And Scratch, the next time someone who orders a lobster out of a tank turns around the brag about his fishing prowess I'll remember Cheney shooting the shit out of a bunch of farm raised birds that were released right in from of him. Are you the idiot you went on to add:

"The discussion with Kerry was about his image as a sportsman, belied in the eyes of some by how he handled his weapon in front of the media that was invited to the event."

Okay, so if thatwas the discussion then, now we have the veep shooting someone while hunting farm raised stocked birds that were released right in front of him. What a sportsman. The hypocrisy is just astounding.

frameone : Exactly how is it that you know he has not done so? How do you know that VP Cheney did not apologize immediately, at the scene?

I personally love how you on the left have gone from mere conjecture that people were drinking to asserting it as some nasty conspiracy.

I do recall there being an instance where VP Cheney was previously at a quail shoot where the animals were released right in front of them. Is there any indication that was the case in this instance ?

This is going to be fun for Leno and Letterman for a few days, unless Rove threatens to break their kneecaps. Who knew Cheney could be so humorous?
So has the NRA issued any comment on the vice-president's shoot first and ask questions later approach? They should send Eddie the Eagle to the WH to teach gun safety.

Something is amiss here. I have hunted quail, pheasant and other flushing birds. It is a rare event that you can just drive out, get out of the vehicle and walk up some birds. Were there dogs involved? Or, were they driven out to location number 9, invited to get out of the vehicle, instructed to approach the designated shooting zone, and then wait for the proprietor to signal the electromechanical release system to send the birds on their way. That "they spotted another covey" is unlikely. They more likely walked in the direction of where the now freed birds settled after a short flight and would walk-up singles. A rule of thumb here is to know where everyone in your party is at every moment, and never track on a bird that crosses back over your line of approach. Some bone head mistakes were made in that party.
