The vice-president shot a guy?

So here’s a legitimate question: do you think that if Al Gore had shot someone that the media wouldn’t hear/report it for 24 hours? And were the police called – is there a police report of this incident of the Vice President shooting someone? Questions swirl.

Lest we forget what this is about: the vice president of the United States shot somebody.

James and Sarah Brady Comment on the Vice President’s Hunting Mishap

“Now I understand why Dick Cheney keeps asking me to go hunting with him,” said Jim Brady. “I had a friend once who accidentally shot pellets into his dog – and I thought he was an idiot.”

“I’ve thought Cheney was scary for a long time,” Sarah Brady said. “Now I know I was right to be nervous.”

Dems:

Following the incident, Cheney reportedly claimed that Whittington’s ties to the quail were “pretty well established”. Despite hitting only Mr. Whittington with his shotgun blast, Cheney was heard to be insisting hours later that the quail, since flown away, was in its “last throes”.

Achenblog:

Cheney is a man who doesn’t just talk the talk. No, if he’s going to send American soldiers into harm’s way, where they might be shot at any moment by a deranged fanatic, he’s also going to do the same thing to his close personal friends. He’s giving his hunting buddies a taste of life in the Cheney Era, when you count yourself lucky just to get out alive.

Ok, who wants to make a WMD joke? Anyone?

  2. I think this shows a pattern haphazard slap-dashness.

  3. BD says:

I’m just waiting for the usual suspects to claim that Cheney isn’t responsible for this–it is instead the fault of (a) the liberal media, (b) Texas state officials, or (c) Clinton, who in some way did this first.

(Actually, I’m waiting for the usual suspects to claim this is no big deal because Andrew Jackson did it first…on purpose…and killed the guy.)

  4. tiponeill says:

This just in: Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia has reversed his previous opinion and now says he considers it an ethics violation to fraternize with the veep. He will no longer join Mr. Cheney on future hunting trips.

  5. Best line I’ve seen so far, (from DailyKos comments);

“You know, maybe those five deferments were for the best.”

    Classic!

  6. Is the Ted Kennedy thing an official talking point now? I’ve seen it on at least three con blogs, and if pedro is parroting it it usually means its official response time.

The vice president shot someone, not an incident that occured 30-40 years ago. The vice president shot someone yesterday.

  7. drpedro says:

    ooooppppssss……..tee,hee…..

Hell, the press gave Teddy a pass and he KILLED a woman….Cheney just winged the old guy….

  8. doug r says:

It’s the upper-class twit of the year! You know, Cheney’s just showing he’s a true Aristocrat:

  9. cellulose says:

This administration is making humor not funny.

    Pardoy can’t compete with this!

  10. TomY says:

Wow, Pedro. Well, if you get to say that Ted Kennedy *killed* someone, then I guess we get to say it about Laura Bush, too…

  11. Jay C says:

The vice president shot someone, not an incident that occured 30-40 years ago.

Chuckle….a murder is now an ‘incident.’

  12. Jay C says:

Oh and bringing up Kennedy is pointless because only a big time ASS would try to score some political points off this matter.

The donkey is a freaking perfect symbol for Democrats. Nothing better represents them than an ASS.

  13. Semanticleo says:

It is reported, in Cheney’s defense, that his intended target was the
    Bill of Rights, but poor intelligence appears to have saved the day;
    for now.

  14. cypher says:

Hell, the press gave Laura a pass and she KILLED her former lover. Cheney just winged the old guy& .

  15. Jay, did you come up with that one all by yourself? Pretty amazing work! You should take your act on the road.

  16. cellulose says:

    From the *FoxNews* article:

“The shooting is unlikely one of a dispute over politics as Burka said Whittington has strong Republican credentials. However, he is also known as an exemplary individual.”

    I love the “However.” Classic.

  17. Jay C says:

6 years later, he s the constant butt of jokes on the Leno/Letterman circuit.

Wow. A sitting Vice President, the butt of jokes on late night talk shows. Will wonders never cease?

and this latest episode will provide a lifetime of well-deserved fodder.

    Can’t disagree with that.

  18. Diamond LeGrande says:

The vice president shot someone, not an incident that occured 30-40 years ago.

Chuckle& .a murder is now an incident.

Oh, give it up. The guy was acquitted. Is it disgraceful? Sure, but there’s no evidence he did this intentionally, and none he actually left her to die. (Intent is part of the corpus delicti of murder.) We’re not talking O.J. Simpson here. This is manslaughter, not murder.

The solutions are simple. Don’t give Dick Cheney a gun, don’t give Teddy Kennedy a drink, and don’t give Freepers the time of day.

  19. JK says:

Oh how the mighty have fallen.

Dick Cheney is a guy who was supposed to have all of this “Gravitas” crap back in 2000. Remember how calm, cool and collected he seemed in front of the world when debating Joe Lieberman?

6 years later, he’s the constant butt of jokes on the Leno/Letterman circuit. These days, he’s largely seen by the American public as a spiteful, bitter, angry, and arrogant old man…and this latest episode will provide a lifetime of well-deserved fodder.

Oh…by the way, here’s to a speedy recovery for the victim of Cheney’s stupidity…. his “friend,” Mr. Whittington.

    JK

  20. Wilbur says:

According to the right wingers we can’t even talk about Libby, Rove, Cheney in Plamegate; we can’t even mention any of the Republican sleazemonkeys tangled up in Abramoffgate. None of those guys have been convicted of anything, they say. Innocent until proven guilty, they say.

But Kennedy? The wingnut Konservative Kangaroo Kourt has met in executive session and the verdict is guilty! guilty!! guilty!!!

    ..of murder, no less.

  21. drpedro says:

Hey OW, it was an accident.

  22. Frank_D says:

Oliver, you’re not trying to say that, relatively speaking, the reason Cheney’s shooting was worse because he’s the Vice – President?
    Jeebus, you are losing it.

Adlai Stevenson shot and killed his cousin by accident. He was the Democratic Presidential Candidate in 1952 and 1956.
    Thus endeth the thread.

  27. The vice president shot a guy.

  28. Frank_D says:

cellulose: Maybe Cheney shot because he was an exemplary individual.
    Hehe

  29. Teddy Kennedy? Is that all you guys can do is wave the “soggy shirt”?

    .
    .
    pathetic.

  30. midderpidge says:

Time to call in Bob Barr’s gun safety inspector.

  31. Wilbur says:

Frank, Pedro, Jay, tell you what:

You let us make fun of Cheney now and we’ll let you time travel back to 1956 to make fun of Adlai Stevenson. Hell, we’ll even let you go back to 1969 and mock Teddy Kennedy.

    Deal?

Oh, and tell us where your time machine is. We’ll take reeeeealllll good care of it to make sure that you can get back safely.

  32. Big Gay Al says:

Best line from a commenter at Atrios: Five deferments, and we wants to start shooting NOW?

  33. TomY says:

They guy’s been in the ICU for two days. But the spin I saw tonight on Fox was: no big deal, totally routine, it was the victim’s fault, kinda funny actually. Witness the power of the Republican spin machine. ICU. Two days.

  34. I think its hilarious that folks are getting so political (especially on the right) over what is going to be in the top 5 all time of comedic homeruns.

    The vice-president shot a guy.

  35. Wilbur says:

Does anyone know where he got shot? What part(s) of the anatomy I mean?

  36. nursepam says:

That was the report I heard on Air America TomY. It was the old guy’s fault. He’s 78 years old for crying out loud. Do ya think they might have been watching out for him? He bent over to pick up his quail. Granted it was an accident. But Teddy wasn’t next in line for the presidency.

  37. Frank_D says:

Wilbur, if you’re juvenile enough to make fun of the Vice – President because he had a hunting accident, be my guest. Trying to make political hay out of it will get you “Shotgun” Adlai and Ted “The Swimmer” Kennedy.

Have fun, Wilbur, it’s your dime, as they say.

  38. withinreason says:

It took 24 hours for the United Soviet Media to report this, that is quite long enough to come up with a viable story on this accident,or maybe Cheney slipped who knows, with the media the true story will never come out.

  39. Mouse says:

After giving a moment of silence for Cheney’s victim recovering in ICU…

…gotta pick myself up off the floor trying to stop laughing because only the most die-hard, partisan, hackneyed, idiotic nincompoops would feel the need to defend what at first blush appears to be an accident by bringing up events from 30-50 years ago. The term “knee-jerk reaction” takes on a whole new meaning (with emphasis on the “jerk”).

Man oh man, if it wasn’t for Frank, Peedro and their ilk I’d miss my daily dose of the giggles. Thanks guys, you never disappoint.

  40. scratch says:

Yawn. This has been done before, only better.

Sorely disappointed that no one brought it up.

  41. frameone says:

Cheney duels with a shotgun? How sporting.

  42. Leroy Brown says:

I think we need more elected officials with weapons. Hell, Andrew Jackson beat a man to death with his cane. Think of how great the 2008 election would be if Obama and Cheney had knock down, drag out fight on Penn. Ave. I’d pay to see that!

  43. Wilbur says:

Wilbur, if you re juvenile enough to make fun of the Vice – President because he had a hunting accident, be my guest. Trying to make political hay out of it will get you Shotgun Adlai and Ted The Swimmer Kennedy.

I don’t know about political hay, but I will make political humor about it. Meanwhile you will keep showing yourself to be the humorless, petulant Frank Burns we all know and love.

If a death had been involved I would have reacted with less glee, out of respect for the vicitm and his family. But Dick Cheney has governed the last five years with no respect or compassion for anyone apart from fellow oil executives, so he’ll get none of either from me.

  44. (: Tom :) says:

I asked this question in the wrong post, but I would like to get some input on it from those who support this adminstration onw that I have found the right place to ask the questions:

I m just wondering – what would happen if some ordinary everyday american accidentally shot one of his hunting buddies like this? Police records, booking and bail, etc?

Anyone want to make bets on what will be happening to Pencil Dick, legality-wise, on this one? Think it will show up on his permanent record?

Has anyone seen any of the police reports about this? Has there been any bookings, court documents, bail hearings, etc., about this incident?

It has already been established that a sitting president can be brought into court about extra-cuuricular activities engaged in while in office. Will we be seeing any of the inside of the court room where Cheney’s trial etc. will be held?

  45. frameone says:

“… Obama and Cheney had knock down, drag out fight…”

Knock down drag out? I call it Obama, first few seconds.

  46. scratch says:

    Tom…

I answered in another thread. Sorry to disappoint you, but it is not uncommon for accidents like this to be accepted as accidents, with no criminal charges. That goes for ordinary folk as well as politicians.

  47. JK says:

    Jay misses point.

My point was that I’ve never seen a Vice President go from such highly regarded stature, to the constant butt of jokes. Dan Quayle was an idiot before he became Vice President, and continued to be so afterwards. Al Gore was a “wooden, tree-hugging stiff” before he became VP, and the perception of him as such didn’t change much as a result of him running for President, although the case can be made that Al appears a bit less “stable” then we might have thought originally.

Cheney was the guy who was going to make sure the frat-boy didn’t screw up, right?

    JK

  48. Joe Schmoe says:

Is there a Republican talking points web site I can go to to find out the proper arguments of the day?

I could save a lot of time not having to plow through the bad grammar, poor spelling and general snarkiness of the umemployed basement threaders.
