"I still say that President Clinton showed a great deal of class when he brought it all back to Mrs. King- where focus needed to be."

Its almost worth listening to all this phony outrage from conservatives to hear them praise Bill Clinton. I didnt get to see the funeral so I wont comment on what was said other than the part I heard about weapons of mass destruction. However, to be blunt I dont think it was the time or place to discuss such matters, when you're supposed to be honoring someone's life. And especially when you know that anything said will be blown out of preportion by the media and used to the full extent by the spinmeisters on the right.

How tough is this to understand?

I know- how about if I let one of Oliver's like minded friends explain it to you. Maybe then you'll understand. (I was raised the same way.)

That goes for you too, then, Marty.

Are the only choices "Mud Wrestling" and "Inoffensive to His Highness"?

No space in between those two?

"A black preacher (with lefty credentials stretching back over his entire lifetime) calls for less money spent on war and more money spent on poor people."

Yeah- see. That's all it was. Everyone is just too sensitive. He wasn't really taking shots at one of the guests on the stage at a funeral. He was just being his ole lefty credentialed self. No problem. He kept his remarks strongly focussed on the dear deceased and made no political statements aimed at anybody else.

It was just oh so natural.

I still say that President Clinton showed a great deal of class when he brought it all back to Mrs. King- where focus needed to be.

the King family is free to turn the funeral into Mud Wrestling match

Just amazing.

A black preacher (with lefty credentials stretching back over his entire lifetime) calls for less money spent on war and more money spent on poor people.

That's "turning the funeral into Mud Wrestling."

Holy mackerel, what a clown you are.

Works both ways.

Like I said- just my opinon.

But I don't think it really wasn't up to Coretta, and I doubt if the family pre-approved the text of any of the speeches, nor should they have to even think about it.

"But the time probably isn t during a funeral when he is an honored guest of the deceased woman s family."

That's up to Coretta and her family, not you or Kate O'Beirne. Period.

Uh- Oliver- The indignant Black man thing doesn't work for you. I too can play indignant black man with the best of them but it isn't necessary in this case. My comments were race neutral.

I wasn't referring to Black people Oliver. I was referring to the people at this funeral who also happened to be black. I think that President Carter's brief, poorly veiled focus on President Bush was inappropriate for a funeral. I had the same thoughts about the Wellstone funeral/Democratic Pep Rally.

But I know Oliver- your need to paint everything you disagree with as race issue overwhelmed you again.

But fear not young Oliver. This black man is not laughing at you this time. I'm just sorry you felt you needed to go there with me.

And Cleo- While Mrs. King may have differed greatly with our President on many various issues, she was a beautiful dignified woman who showed much greater class on the occasions when she accompanied the President in laying wreath at here husband's memorial. Did she use the time to pillorize the President? Nah- the occasion wasn't about the President; it was about her husband.
I feel the same about this wonderful woman's funeral. A few partisans chose to focus the funeral on George W. Bush. And who saved the day? I have a great respect for President Clinton for bringing the focus back to Mrs. King, the woman, the mother, the wife, the activist.

There is a time and place for focussing politically motivated shots at the President. But the time probably isn't during a funeral when he is an honored guest of the deceased woman's family. Whether they complain or not.

But hey- that's just my opinion.

What is this with Republicans bitching every time a liberal dies and all his friends remember how liberal he was at his funeral? First Paul Wellstone, now Coretta Scott King. In the case of Wellstone there was no genuine controversy, but the local Republican party managed to whine so much that the news reported there was a controversy and folks were offended. Nobody else in Minnesota cared. Now we have the same thing with Mrs. King (does this make Sen. Wellstone "The Scarecrow"?).

Can the GOP skin get any thinner? Really, this is trivial shit compared to Ann Coulter openly sympathizing with a foe of America and wishing he blew up the New York Times building.

The comedy here is that Kondrake was arguing based on that clip that the funeral was NOT as much of a political pep rally as some were saying. That the people were respectful to Mrs. King and the invited guests of her loving family and that the politics were muted.

Thanks Oliver for showing that the moments where people forgot why they were there were just as disrespectful as we thought.

The Republican manufactured response to the funeral depends on people not knowing two things 1) that any hint of liberalism in anyone's remarks was done with the full approval of King's family; and 2) that the audience, being representative of black Americans, was going wild for it. Otherwise the curtain gets pulled back on their real reaction: that they simply object to the political opinions held by black America.
