Moment Of Irony
Tweet
In discussing the cartoon riots (which are in fact, so ridiculous they’re ripe for ridicule), David Brooks makes an ironic statement (the “you” in this case is a reference to the muslim world):
Our mind-set is progressive and rational. Your mind-set is pre-Enlightenment and mythological. In your worldview, history doesn’t move forward through gradual understanding.
I would say the same thing of the conservative mindset, which always seems to be stuck – sociologically, idealogically, etc. – somewhere back in 1950-something.

Try 1850.
“you?” as in the entire muslim world? what planet is he from? the extreme, fundamentalists… sure. they’re still protecting muhhamed in mecca circa 650 AD. but there are over a billion muslims worldwide and a vast majority are very moderate.
Oh, yes — Oliver. 1950. Oh so long ago. But wasn’t after that “really cool War that FDR and Truman won singlehanded without any help from non – Democrat Americans”?
It think it’s more like 1920-something. Before the New Deal. Before the idea came to life that the federal government should serve all the people, should rein in unbridled corporate power and should ameliorate the inhumanity of the capitalist system.
Yes, Mr. Powell, before the United States government abandoned its founding principles to flirt with Utopianism. Thank God some of us have seen the error of FDR’s left wing “brain trust.”
Brooks is right. So many leftists are still tied to outdated Marxist and socialist theories. You would have thought that the lessons of history, the record of bloodshed and poverty, the collapse of the great Soviet Union, their would be Utopia, would have sobered them up. But who’s to say.
Dugger, I remember Marx Well
My, don’t all you lefties get ignorant when you try to be funny. “War against Science”, “Pre – Enlightenment.” Side – splitting.
Considering their “War Against Science”, I’d certainly define the conservative movement as possessing a “pre-Enlightenment” mentality.
In fact, I said this very thing in a comment on OW.com the other day.
Bush’s “War on Science” has been more effective than his “War on Terror”.
Really wilbur, can you show where exactly Bush’s “war on science” has been effective? Can you quote where bush demanded that “intelligent design” be taught in science classes….
I’ll wait for the answer right here…..
Here ya go, peed’:

That is not a demand Quaker – I specifically said where did he demand.
I don’t understand. He said he was gonna wait here….
I said…
Can you quote where bush demanded that intelligent design be taught in science classes
Cracker in the cellar responds with a non-quote referencing Bush “saying that schoolchildren should be taught about intelligent design,
Anybody see any important words here?
I don’t care if they teach about ID, immaculate conception and the Flying Spaghetti Monster (by the way, thanks for that link OW, I love it…seriously), just don’t do it in a SCIENCE CLASS
You can stop looking for more quotes, they don’t exist….but my point remains
Perfect.
I’m sure he meant for it to be taught in religion class. You’re right.
and damn Oliver, why did you wipe out my “moment of irony” quote with Harry reid?
Glad you have come around….
Regardless of the specific wording, Bush and his minions have encouraged the zombie-like hordes of ID’ers in their crusade against rational thought. They have showed a singular lack of leadership in encouraging the improvement of science eduction and have encouraged policies that threaten to make the US lag behind countries like Finland and Slovenia in genetic research.
I’m not sure how to gauge exactly how effective this war on science has been, but I do know this:
Bush’s War on Terror has increased the amount of terrorism in the world.
Bush’s War on Science has not increased the amount of science in the world (except perhaps in places other than the US).
ipso fatso, Q.E.2, my point stands.
You’ll not find me backing ANYTHING strongly supported by religious fundamentalists.
That being said….why is it that the lefties always return to the Dan Rather defense….” It may be a forgery, but it reflects the (unproven)truth!”
You guys are morons…
What the heck are you talking about pedro? Nothing I said, apparently. Probably just flapping your gums again….
morons, eh? I hope whatever it is that’s making you into such a bitchy queen these last few weeks gets better. Seriously, man. An enraged reactionary armed with a scalpel and skull saw is no laughing matter!
Its called a “craniotome….” hey wilbur, doesn’t the Slurpy machine need to be cleaned or something…?
