Yes, the AFC was a joke during that time period. You have no argument from me about that. But that was then, this is now. The NFC of today is not as pitiful as the AFC was back then, but most of the action now is on the AFC side of the league. The only hope the NFC had of late was Philly and they imploded when T.O. showed his true self and McNabb when out with injuries.

For the record, I hate the Steelers and truly wished for them to mopped up by the Seahawks. It didn't happen. Big Ben was a major flop and the Seahawks didn't capitalize. The officiating was horrible. Big Ben DID NOT score that touchdown. The pushing off penalty called on Darrell Jackson was bogus. The blocking below the waist call on Hasselback was just plain wrong. But I still feel with all those bad calls, Pittsburgh was playing poorly enough for Seattle to win.

The officiating decided that game. The Hawks TD that got flagged, Big Ben's TD that wasn't. Hasselback called for blocking below the waist while tackling that dude? The officiating was egregious and an embarrassment to the NFL. The Hawks did make a lot of silly mistakes; that fact and the poor officiating proves that the AFC is not as dominant as many believe. The Hawks had a great game plan; they totally disrupted most of what the "Stealers" were trying to do.

I guess being a Cowboys fan had got me used to seeing the AFC as a bunch of tackling dummies for the NFC for too many years. The AFC was a joke. The NFC of today is competitive. 7 of the last 9 doesn't match the streak by the NFC. If the Hawks played the Stealers this week they could beat them. If the Bills played the Cowboys every week back in the '93 the Bills record would be 0-16.

The AFC has won 7 of the past 9 Superbowls. A pretty decent streak by any measure.

As far as the last Superbowl, the officiating was horrible. But the Seahawks still should have been able to beat the very beatable Steelers.

The NFC did win 13 in a row from 1985 to 1997, but that's soooo yesterday. As it stands now, the NFC should be know as the "Noncompetitive Football Clowns".

But you are right on one point, "the Hawks never had a chance". Only because they are an inferior team from an inferior conference.

Dominance is winning 14 or 15 straight Superbowls like the NFC did, the Almost Football Conference ain't even close; and this last one...the Hawks never had a chance, just ask the Refs.

"I only watch the Fox pregame because I don t care about the AFC"

Oliver, I am a frequent reader of your site and I generally agree with you on all things politcal. But your comment about not caring about the AFC is odd.

I said it's odd, not because the AFC has been the dominant conference for the past few years, but because your strong devotion to the Washington Football Team implies that you are a strong fan of football in general. The Washington Football Team doesn't exist in a vacuum.

Your passion for the Washington Football Team is undeniable and admirable, but the best football may be played in division or conference outside your local area of interest.

Enjoy the game wherever it's played...

Phil Simms sucks as a commentator.

Not as bad as his son does as QB.

Please not Joe Buck... Please not Joe Buck...

My guess is they'll steal a back-bench ESPNer (Sal Palantonio, Karl Ravech, Jon Anderson) or use the one they already stole (Chris Myers).
