Man, it feels like the Challenger accident just happened. When it occurred I was 8 years old, and obsessed with going into space and the entire process involved in doing so. They were people who died in the pursuit of science and furthering human knowledge of the universe – very noble indeed.

I was watching it on HBO, and for a moment it looked as if perhaps one stage had separated from another. Then came that moment when you realized that something had gone horrribly wrong.
As is usual in the United States, there was a bunch of investigations and accusations, and the program shut down for a while.
I won’t disclose my age at the time, but the feeling was akin to hearing
JFK was dead. I’ll never forget the look on Christa McAuliffe’s parents
faces as they watched the descending remnants of the shuttle.

What, Frank can’t even acknowlege a solemn tragedy without taking a snide, offhanded smack at the space program?
