Haw. Not just a resort. Not just a Swiss resort. An “exCLUsive Swiss resort.”

I just love that little emphasis she adds.

  2. Gravatar Icon 2 drpedro

Sorry, where did he fly in from?

    Did he?

    Isn’t that called “reporting”?

Even CNN can’t help it that Kerry is an East coast brahmin that married into a gazillion dollars and winters in Gstaad…..

  3. Gravatar Icon 3 factcheck

At least Kerry was working. Not like Bunnypants at the Crawford pig farm. Oh, that’s right, clearing brush is hard work.

  4. Gravatar Icon 4 cypher

Ann Althouse can’t stand that Kerry was in Davos either.

  5. Gravatar Icon 5 Brandon

    Well…

Are you challenging the notion that Kerry’s a limosuine liberal?

  6. Gravatar Icon 6 Semanticleo

Why is it wingers only disdain wealth in the hands of liberals?

Is it the concept of ‘noblesse oblige’ you object to?

  7. Gravatar Icon 7 SaveFarris

I can see how liberals would be upset if people report actual facts about them.

  8. Gravatar Icon 8 sooperedd

CNN sucks..just a little less than FOX. It is TV for morons.

  9. Gravatar Icon 9 The Wurmser Turns

Better an East coast brahmin that married into a gazillion dollars and winters in Gstaad than a brain-dead grandson of a Nazi sympathizer who tanked THREE companies, only managed to survive St. Albans and Yale woth a lot of concealed help, and now looks to have put three innocent people to death during his do-nothing (but sign death warrants) “reformer with results” (including a greatly increased deficit) stint as governor of Texas.

I’ll take the brahmin over the baboon any day.

  10. Gravatar Icon 10 The Wurmser Turns

…and, oh, yes, I almost forgot — Michael Chertoff’s in Davos too. Where’s the sarcasm about that, Wolf?

  11. Gravatar Icon 11 The Wurmser Turns

Quaker in a Basement pointed out that the corrupt press whore emphasized “[n]ot just a resort. Not just a Swiss resort. An ‘exCLUsive Swiss resort.’”

Gee, aren’t Senator Saxby Chambliss, Jack Welch and Paul Wolfowitz at that very same exCLUsive Swiss resort? Funny how you don’t hear the Conservative News Network treating those three in the same sneering, cheap-shot, smarmy, corrupt-press manner as they do Kerry.

  12. Gravatar Icon 12 Leroy Brown

I gotta be honest here, I’m with ian on this one. This seems pretty straight forward. Is it not an exclusive resort in Switzerland? Is it not a last ditch effort? What exactly did they say that was incorrect? They didn’t bring up the others because the story wasn’t about them…

It might be a little over the top, but this is hardly enough to stake a claim on.

  13. Gravatar Icon 13 Echidne

I gotta be honest here, I m with ian on this one. This seems pretty straight forward. Is it not an exclusive resort in Switzerland?

Well, imagine if Bush went to visit the Pope and the CNN said that “Bush is basking under the Italian sun”. It is very wrong to omit that the World Economic Forum is held in Davos, Switzerland, and that Kerry is there because of the conference.

  14. Gravatar Icon 14 spazmo

It’s inflammatory and completely irrelevant to the story they were “reporting” on. I mean, my God, “gulfstream liberal”? Next time they plop Bush’s mug on screen why don’t they caption it “lawless murdering bastard”? It’s just the facts, right?

  15. Gravatar Icon 15 tiny

Not just a resort. Not just an exclusive swiss resort. But the meeting place of the World Economic Forum, where Kerry is representing the US on the Senate Finance Committee (and where he is the ranking Dem on the Debt-reduction and Long-term Debt sub-committee).

Look at it this way– McClellan and his ancillaries in the media have to work to wring a little love from the chest thumpers. Forget Scottie’s smirk and his frat-boy insults. The fact that they have to play it this way shows deep, abject desperation. They know they’ve lost the moderates. Now they’re struggling to hold on to the morons.

  16. Gravatar Icon 16 tiny

Not only is “elite Davros” angle inflamatory and irrelevant, the coverage of Kerry’s remarks contrast sharply with the way that the media treated statements made by Saxby Chamblis and others who spoke out from Davros against the filibuster. Republicans speaking from Davros aren’t treated as elitists commenting from a vacation resort.

    Kinda odd contrast, doncha think?

  17. Gravatar Icon 17 ahem

I can see how liberals would be upset if people report actual facts about them.

Sure. Just mention that ‘maverick’ John McCain and chickenhawk Saxby Chambliss were performing their Senate duties in Davos as well.

Is it not an exclusive resort in Switzerland?

Is it not the World Economic Forum? When the G8 held its summit at Sea Island, S.C., did CNN make a big deal about Bush being at an exCLUsive resort?

  18. Gravatar Icon 18 drpedro

Oh….now it’s the “Bush did it too!” argument.

The worm DOES turn, n’est pas?

  19. Gravatar Icon 19 AlanDownunder

It might be a little over the top, but this is hardly enough to stake a claim on.

I claim murder by 1000 cuts.

  20. Gravatar Icon 20 stick

Maybe the CNN reporter should have refered to it like the BBC: “for five days in January, the bunker-like congress centre of Davos and the surrounding luxury hotels turn themselves into a high-intensity think tank.” http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4201551.stm
Isn’t it odd that that when multi-millionaires get together to talk about how to ease poverty the subject of spending their wealth doesn’t come up, but the subject of spending other people’s wealth does?

  21. Gravatar Icon 21 Say Anything - North Dakota s Most Popular Political Blog » Liberal Bias?

[...] is thinks he s found himself a bit of right-wing media bias from CNN. Watch the clip here. I m not sure what the big deal is, myself.  I mean, Kerry [...]

  22. Gravatar Icon 22 ahem

Oh& .now it s the Bush did it too! argument.

Yawn. No, it’s the tedious truism that big summit meetings and their equivalent don’t take place in trailer parks or housing projects.

Of course, there are also people who protest the fact that these gatherings involve discussing world poverty take place in expensive resorts, whom the wingnuts have typically smeared and derided as smelly tree-hugging hippie communists. Those protestors actually have a very good point, but Davos, for all its exclusivity, isn’t as sequestered as some summits. If anything, it’s a victim of its own success; as more bigwigs attend, the public access diminishes. After all, there are Bad Guys out there.

And it’s funny how no-one describes Dick Cheney as a multi-millionaire who winters at Jackson Hole, isn’t it?

  23. Gravatar Icon 23 chezgle

it s funny how no-one describes Dick Cheney as a multi-millionaire who winters at Jackson Hole

And that’s just his disclosed location.

  24. Gravatar Icon 24 Wilbur

I have to agree with those who say this is trivial– but this is exactly the kind of thing that conservatives complain about when they complain about liberal bias in the media.

  25. Gravatar Icon 25 SaveFarris

No, conservatives complain about things like this.

  26. Gravatar Icon 26 SaveFarris

    Or this.

  27. Gravatar Icon 27 Avedon

Oliver, it might have been useful if you explained for your less alert readers that Kerry is not in Davos on vacation.

  28. Gravatar Icon 28 Wilbur

Thanks for providing me with excellent examples, SaveFarris:

The conservatives on this thread are telling us we shouldn’t complain if what is being reported about Kerry is factual. What are the factual inaccuracies in the first article you link to? The article did not claim that the government subpoena of google records put user privacy at risk, the article simply stated that this subpoena -and other government moves- have made many users uneasy. Are you saying that is not true?

Your source’s crtique of the article is what is wildly biased, in that it misrepresents the nature of the article and takes no account of passages in it like the following:

The government and the cooperating companies say the search queries cannot be traced to their source, and therefore no personal information about users is being given up. But the government’s move is one of several recent episodes that have caused some people to think twice about the information they type into a search engine, or the opinions they express in an e-mail message.
The government has been more aggressive recently in its efforts to obtain data on Internet activity, invoking the fight against terrorism and the prosecution of online crime. A surveillance program in which the National Security Agency intercepted certain international phone calls and e-mail in the United States without court-approved warrants prompted an outcry among civil libertarians. And under the antiterrorism USA Patriot Act, the Justice Department has demanded records on library patrons’ Internet use.

Those actions have put some Internet users on edge, as they confront the complications and contradictions of online life.

In other words, the information that your source claims that the times “hid” (until they published another article about it the next day), is right there in the article.

As for your second link, again, a wildly biased critique: ABC claimed to base its report on “local officials and al aaeda videos” The critique ignores the “local officials” part and rags on the report as if it were based on nothing but al qaeda videos.

  29. Gravatar Icon 29 ian

White Whale …. or they are just trying to balance their far left anchors?

  30. Gravatar Icon 30 White Whale

How about we agree that CNN is shilling to the far-right with hiring wingnuts like Bill Bennet and Glen Beck. I once agreed with my conservative freinds that CNN was indeed the Clinton New Network or even the Communist News Network as they agreed Fox was the Facist News Network. Now it seems to me that media is not liberally biased but literally tows the party line of those in power, which is more pathetic than being partisan. This video clip shows that news networks can’t be bothered with real news reporting but rather more Entertainment weekly demonstrations.

  31. Gravatar Icon 31 Hattie

Hey, I’ve been in Davos. It’s pretty nice there. Great scenery. Used to live in Switzerland.
But wasn’t Kerry there to work?
Call me a cheese eating liberal if you will.
    Swiss cheese, fondue, raclette.
    Oops. Getting hungry

  32. Gravatar Icon 32 SaveFarris

Wilbur, you missed the point. The entire article was a 100% refutation of the previous day’s article that whipped up a frenzy about the Bush Admin “spying on people” by supeonaing Google records. The orginal story was the jumping off point for all the evening news shows, other newspapers, and a million blog posts. Today? None of these other outlets are reporting the update of “We just made the s**t up”.

    THAT’S Liberal bias.

And if you can’t tell that treating al-qaida as a non-biased source of information is not a good idea, well, no wonder Dems are losing elections.

  33. Gravatar Icon 33 White Whale

Oh please. Every network out there doesn’t report “news”. 90% of the shit is speculation(my god do they go on forever about shit they do not know!) and news as entertainment value.
    Ian,
Far left? I mean seriously. Ted Turner is not giving talking points anymore to the network(back when CNN was liberal slanted). The reason News channels suck is because they have about 2 hours of news and try to stretch it out over 24hours! News orgs care about ratings, and that will change with the mood of the country or the potential for ratings based on a story. This “liberal” media is such a canard because its not the issue. So you are saying that news should be devoid of bias? I would agree but that will never happen. America is more concerned with being entertained than it is with being informed or learning. Face it, you want to hear the news you want to hear as long as it strokes your ideology or entertains you. Until news orgs become informative, this biased media argument just doesn’t matter.

  34. Gravatar Icon 34 Wilbur

    Bullfeathers, SaveFarris.

The second article presented evidence that privacy was not the legal basis on which google was challenging the subpoena (though google was worried about the precedent the subpoena would set for privacy issues). It also presented evidence from various sources that indicated that this particular subpoena would not jeopardize anyone’s privacy.

For this to be a 100% refutation, or even a 1% refuation, of the previous article, the previous article would have had to have claimed that the subpoena DID jeopardize privacy, or that privacy WAS the legal basis for google’s challenge. Read the article. It claims neither of those things.

The article does not take a position on wehther hworries about the google case are justified, it just records the FACT that those worries exist.

By your own standards, what’s wrong with reporting the facts?

To paraphrase one of your own posts above: “I can see how conesrvatives would be upset if people report actual facts about life in Bush’s America.”

As for al-qaeda videos: I sure hope that ABC looks at them, but critically. A good newsman can get a lot of solid information even from the rankest propaganda, whether it’s al-qaeda videos or Whitehouse press briefings. ABC never said it was using al-qaeda videos uncritically or without corroboration. You and the shrill, angry site you link to simply assumed that to be the case.

    Now THAT’s conservative bias.

So thanks, SF, for giving a great illustration of what I’ve long said: 90% of “liberal media bias” is manufactured by conservatives.

  35. Gravatar Icon 35 ian

“Far left? I mean seriously. Ted Turner is not giving talking points anymore to the network(back when CNN was liberal slanted).”

I forgot that you had connections with CNN who told you when and when not they were being fed talking points from Turner. My bad.

The fact is that if CNN does have right-wing reporters, which I see no sign of, then where is the outrage of left-wing reports? Wolf Blitzer? Jack Cafferty? Aaron Brown? Lou Dobbs? Anderson Cooper?

Thank you, doctor, for providing a perfect example of what’s wrong with CNN’s “reporting.” The spectacular headline leaves the viewer with exactly the impression you horked up for us.

In fact, Mr. Kerry was attending the Davos economic summit along with representatives from the major industrial economies of the West. Somehow, it must be his fault that they chose to hold the summit at this tony resort.

  37. Gravatar Icon 37 drpedro

Lots attended, but few in their own G5 Gulfstream…..

  38. Gravatar Icon 38 moonbat monitor

Sorry man. If that is an example of what you see as bias against liberals, you’re in for a very frustrating life.

I suggest you quit making mountains out of…..not even molehills……just completely flat ground.

    Since when are facts biased?

    Sheesh.

  39. Gravatar Icon 39 stwendeler

And the fact that he started his “filibuster Alito” campaign FROM DAVOS (which is definitely an exclusive Swiss resort town) means that CNN is reporting this accurately.

Kerry is no doubt unashamed of his presence in Davos…. why are you?

Perhaps it doesn’t sync with the “We’re for the little guy” meme?

  40. Gravatar Icon 40 Shell

Right-wingers and Republicans are SO uninformed! Did they ever think that Kerry might have been there ON GOVERNMENT BUSINESS? That Republicans were there, too?

No, they are SO overwhelmingly jealous that he is rich, and they aren’t.

    You poor stupid imbeciles.

  41. Gravatar Icon 41 drpedro

Let me tell you , the Dems would have KILLED for one staged photo of Kerry with his hands dirty!

Instead they got pictures of him windsurfer off Nantucket!

    LOL

  42. Gravatar Icon 42 ahem

Perhaps it doesn t sync with the We re for the little guy meme?

Oh, yawn x2. Go jerk off to photos of your King ‘clearing brush’.

  43. Gravatar Icon 43 Quaker in a Basement

Kerry is no doubt unashamed of his presence in Davos& . why are you?

Who said anything about being ashamed? I’d like it a lot better if CNN reported that Kerry issued the call for a filibuster while taking time out from an international economic summit.

    But no.

CNN, pandering hard to rubes like peedro, gives us “an exCLUsive Swiss resort…”

  44. Gravatar Icon 44 Wilbur

    Since when are facts biased?

So it would be okay with you all if every report on something Bush did began this way:

“President and failed businessman George Bush…”

“President Bush, a perennial C student at Yale…..”

“President Bush, who claims to have put his drinking problem behind him…”

Just the facts, right? Who could object to that?

  45. Gravatar Icon 45 drpedro

    Nice try wilbur.

How about some temporally related facts?

We don’t walk around saying “intern-drowing liberal democrat Kennedy” either….or “disbarred, impeached ex-president Clinton”, unless the story is related. How about “Ex-Grand Kleagle democratic Senator Byrd?”

  46. Gravatar Icon 46 Quaker in a Basement

We don t walk around saying & . disbarred, impeached ex-president Clinton , unless the story is related.

    We don’t?

Haw. Are there two peedros posting here?

  47. Gravatar Icon 47 Wilbur

I certainly think that the president’s sobriety and whether he has any grey matter between his ears are pertinent to his present performance, so what’s the problem?
