Ollie has taken to expunging my posts.

That of course is his right.

The funny thing is, he is particularly sensitive to the ones that suggest that most of the stuff he posts here is shameless toady'ing up to the democratic party, in hopes of a job in some future (FAR in the future I imagine) democratic administration.

I guess I am getting a little too close to home eh Ollie? Not all that happy to see your true motivations in print....you just want the Obermeisters in the Party to know that you are a good soldier and "on message"

Kinda pathetic Ollie, kinda pathetic.....

"They can believe whatever the hell they want to believe, but they ve got no right to force that on another woman s body."

Try to understand this. The pro-life movement fervently believes that although a woman has a right to her own body, the right to life of the unborn child supercedes that "right". It is considered murder in the eyes of such folks. Me included.

Trying to argue your point from the premise of the woman's right to choose is a silly place to start when you are trying to convince a pro-lifer that a woman's "right" to her own body is more important than a babies life.

Dkelsmith:

Excellent and thoughtful post as usual.

1) Zambo, no offense dear, but you're an asshole. So if OW decides to leave a post of yours off his website, my guess is its for good reason. Go cry about it on your own damn website.

2) I agree with you, dkel, in that people shouldn't be allowed to conceive until they're good and ready. I still like "contraceptives in the water" and think we should aim science in that direction. :-)

3) Abstinence works about as well as prohibition. Kids are going to fool around and have sex. Incidently, and I'm too lazy to go grab a website in support, teen pregnacy is down, significantly...They're all giving each other blowjobs in lieu of intercourse. Sounds like a great idea to me. :-D

4) How about this: we restrict abortions (a little...I'll give you guys 3rd trimester, but thats it, with caveates), but make all contraceptives free for everyone in the country...and don't let pharmacists refuse to issue them.

As strange as it may seem, I agree with Frank_D. I think that anti-choice is kind of crazy terminology. Personally I am not cool with the idea of abortion. I am a Centrist in a lot of areas, but when it comes to social issues I am a little more conservative than most Democrats. (I was an "oopsie" child who was born to parents who were born during the Great Depression) I think that a woman should have a right to choose what she does with her body, if she wants to have breast reduction, enlargement, liposuction, cheek implants, or what have you then I suppose she is entitled to do as she chooses. I am not going into that "is the fetus a person" dilemna, as it is the most polarizing question in America; but I do contend that my wife is a woman with remarkable intelligence, free will, and all of that other stuff. But, if she were to become pregnant I don't think that my thoughts of what is to become of half of my DNA should be relegated to the wastebasket along with the "fetus". The issue at hand is not simply about "her body". If that argument were true, then I would be chastised for telling my pregnant wife that I will not allow her a double shot of Tequila, or to tell her she can't go bungie jumping when she is 9 months pregnant, or tell her that I won't tolerate her smoking or water skiing or competing in the X games in the half-pipe ramp skateboard competition. If I told my wife those things then it would seem that if the basis behind this was a "woman's right to choose what to do with her body" then I would be vilified as an Archie Bunker, wife-beater tee shirt-wearing nutjob. When in all actuality if I had to tell my wife such things, they would wonder about her mental state. The idea that Conservatives are anti-choice is kind of absurd, as are the Pro-Life, Pro-Choice. Either you support the idea that Abortion should continue to be legal, or you don't. I would like to see a world where nobody gets pregnant without...

A. Desiring to be pregnant,
B. Being Financially and morally responsible to care for a baby,
C. Fully understanding the basic needs of a child.

As that will never happen, we are still faced with the dilemna of right and wrong. I don't personally agree with the idea of abortion except for medical reasons that apply to the woman and the fetus, both singularly and collectively. And as crazy as it may seem, if a woman conceives after being raped, I wouldn't want to see her be forced to bear the child. I would hope that she would have it and put it up for adoption, but I can certainly understand her feelings. (I know the child didn't ask to be conceived in that way.)

But, I will have to say, that to make abortions illegal would be about as successful as Prohibition. I read somewhere that in one state it was once illegal for girls under 13 or 16, (I can't remember much about this) to have their ears pierced at salons without parental consent. Subsequently some girl died and several of her friends became gravely ill with hepatitis when they had a "piercing party" at someone's house. I can imagine the days of backroom hack jobs for women, and especially young women returning. I believe we should have programs that promote abstinence and education, but that also give children the resources to protect themselves from pregnancy and disease. I think it is grossly unfair to label people who are against abortion as just a bunch of wrinkled, non-virile old men who meddle in the affairs of women. It is equally absurd to say that people who support legalized abortions are too lazy to buy condoms or pills and simply want a guaranteed contraceptive measure to eradicate an unwanted pregnancy. There are many reasons, and I don't purport to know the solution.

BTW, isn't "anti - choice" kinda dumb.
Are people who oppose the death penalty, anti - penalty?
I'm opposed to the random, and arbitrary termination of pregnancies, so I'm anti - choice.
Here's my choice -- leave the kids alone!

"Next Monday the anti-choice groups will be coming together in Washington for yet another rally where they insist that they can tell women what to do with their own bodies"

Did it ever occur to you that "pro-lifers" actually believe from the core of their being that abortion kills a human life. You don't have to believe it. But they believe it.

It's not about "telling women what to do with their own bodies".
