Wacky NFL Weekend
Tweet
I went from picking 3/4 games last week to getting 0/4 games right this week. That’s why I go to Vegas for the cheap food and fun shows.
You know the NFL and ABC have got to hate the idea that Seattle or Carolina are going to be in the Superbowl (as opposed to cities like DC or Chicago with wider appeal).
MOVIE: I really liked Glory Road. You know exactly where the movie is taking you, but it’s a fun sports movie ride. The theater I was in was cheering and applauding and I’m positive there was some Rudy-style crying by the guys in attendance.
BY THE WAY: Dallas sucks.

It’s too bad Chicago lost.
A Steelers/Bears SuperBowl would have been incredibly old school. However, I’m pleased that my Broncos live to see another weekend–at home, no less. With the Colts and the Pats out of the way, the Donks have a shot at it.
One football thing we totally agree on:
Dallas sucks.
Ok Oliver, Ill say it. Im glad the Redskins lost. Not only because they have an owner who is an even bigger asshole than Jerry Jones, but because they are Washington Redskins. By the way, why aren’t you pushing for them to change their mascot?
I think the championship games should be pretty good. At least there are fewer games for me to guess wrongly on.
Yeah, DC has a wide appeal.
Hoo-ray, Happer, the whole world will weep with gratitude when the Skins make the Super Bowl.
OW,
I thought Shanahan is a playoff choker! LOL.
I’m ecstatic over the Broncos’ victory over the Pats and the Steelers’ win over Indy. Pittsburgh will be tough and they are on a roll. But I’ll take the Broncos at Mile High any day. If we had to play at Indy the only suspense would be over the margin of defeat.
Gee, too bad it’s not at Mile High.
I’m not nitpicking. I’m just pointing out that “home-field advantage” seems to have eluded the Broncos since the dismantling of old Mile High. Believe me, I’m glad to see the Broncos doing well and that Jake has resurrected a somewhat underwhelming career.
Alright, “Invesco” at Mile High. Sigh…
Glory Road was a really good movie, but since, according to Oliver, all Republicans are racist, i didn’t like the ending because i really wanted the all-white Kentucky team to win.
Give it a rest PSU. I am actually rooting for Seattle since my Bears were so arrogant that they believed they could shutout the Panthers. Smith was awesome, but he did benefit from some players slipping. Alabama’s best Shaun Alexander will be back and go to win the Superbowl. I bet my all powerful reputation on this wager!:)
Trakjoe,
Are you aware that the Broncos’ home record this year is now 9-0?
In fact, since they opened the new stadium in 2000, this is their home record.
In 2004: 6-2
2003: 6-2
2002: 5-3
2001: 6-2
2000: 6-2
Total: 38-11
Yeah, that’s home field advantage. Remember, in 2001, their overall record was 8-8, and 9-7 in 2002, so they were MUCH better at home than on the road.
Brother. The Broncos played well. But the Pats handed them that game. Home field had nothing to do with it.
1.) The normally unflappable Troy Brown drops a kickoff.
2.) The kicker knocks the ball out of the hands of Ellis Hobbs. The Kicker.
3.) Horrific bad call by referee on Asante Samuel Pass Interference. Boomer Esiason, this morning, called it an “awful call.” Last night, they even referenced that call during the Colts/Steelers game.
It was our turn to have a bad turnover game. Most analysts say the Pats dominted the game physically. Brady puts up 370 yards passing and finally proved he was human by throwing a pick to the best corner in the NFL in Champ Bailey. (Yes, he’s the best corner in the NFL.) Pats shut down Denver’s vaunted running attack. 60 yards?
Turnovers kill you. Not sure how much that has to do with home field.
I’m pulling for the Seahawks. I hate the Steelers, I hate the Panthers, and I hate the cheap-shot, chippy, knee-cutting, Broncos.
JK
I too am rooting for the Seahawks – they will be taken for granted come sunday and all the hype will be on Panthers. The end of the day it will be all about our QB Matt – you can’t compare the two kids that the Panthers beat up on the last two weeks. Matt is a stud and will make the plays to win this game! It will be a great day in Seattle I wish you all was here to enjoy the rain of the Hawks!
Either P-burgh or Denver should have little trouble with whoever ends up on top of the B-conference, so the real superbowl is next Sunday.
If it weren’t for the altitude sickness I’d say that the Steelers would pick apart the Broncos like bellybutton lint. As it is, toss-up. Plummer has more experience passing in zero-g than Big Ben does.
The NFL needs some new rules: no indoor stadiums, no stadiums where the cheerleaders are sherpas and the international space station is a local call.
The Asante call was terrible. And the Pats outgained the Broncos. But turnovers are usually a product of intimidation. For some reason, the Pats were unusually intimidated. Usually they scare the hell out of their opponents into coughing up the ball or throwing a duck to a DB.
The reason the Broncos only ran 60+ yards is their game plan. They put the game on the shoulders of Plummer because they knew that Anderson and Bell wouldn’t be able to break through the healthy Pats front 7. I suspect Shanahan will do the same thing against the Steelers. They won’t run against the 3-4 because they can’t. But Plummer will pick it apart, or dump a lot of screens to the flat as Polamalu overpursues. Actually, I think Cowher will do the same thing in reverse, having Big Ben throw a ton in the first quarter.
I think that unless the Hawks come up with a game plan to stop Steve Smith, it won’t matter how good Hasselbeck is. He’s better than Delhomme, and Jackson is a decent target, but Smith just wants the ball more.
I’m a Bears fan and I’m willing to call Smith our D’s daddy. He made Peanut look foolish out there.
Smith is hot – fact – he will need to catch for 200+ yards to carry the team…lets see what the unsung Seattle D can do about it – I am excited!
I think that Sea or Carol can wipe up the Steelers…Denver seems to be a little more solid to me.
Zappa – That’s exactly what he did on Sunday. I am in awe of the man and was very happy indeed that he ended up on my FF team this year.
