Annapolis

This new movie Annapolis is about the tough as nails guys at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. So who do they pick for the scary-ass drill sargeant? Male supermodel Tyrese Gibson. What the hell?

“Drop and look fabulous”
“Sashay, you m-fers!”

C’mon.

Maybe it should have been him

  2. Quaker in a Basement says:

“Tough as nails guys at the Naval Academy”?

Haw. I grew up in Pensacola. The officer “schoolboys” didn’t exactly have a reputation for toughness.

Look out for the enlisted guys, tho.

  3. BD says:

Your mildly homophobic comments aside, OW, Tyrese Gibson recently appeared in the crime drama Four Brothers and in 2 Fast 2 Furious. He certainly hasn’t made a movie career out of being metro.

He’s got a physique, and the rest is acting.

One could point out that supermodels generally aren’t know for their acting any more than their toughness

Drill seargent? At the naval academy? Wearing whites?

Oh, yea, your a leftist. What would you know about the rank structure of he US Armed Forces. Unless of course it was printed in the NYT or some Media Matters pamphlet…

  6. rainlion says:

Pedro… give us all a break, this movie isn’t even an attempt at an accurate portrayal. Heck – it wasn’t even shot in Annapolis – it was shot in Philly. As for OW’s obvious disagreement with casting… hey, we all have opinions.

  7. drpedro says:

Yea, ok rainlion. I guarantee they won’t be portraying any “navy drill seargents” in the pic.

It just goes to show the sort of lip service the lefties give to the military is just that, lip service (maybe I shouldn’t make that reference with our male “supermodel” involved….)

  8. BD says:

Whatever, pedro. It goes to show that some people don’t know the military, it doesn’t go to show that all lefties don’t know it.

Tell you what–if I find a Bush voter that thought the film Stealth was an accurate representation of the Air Force, do I get to say that the right doesn’t know anything about the military?

  9. BD says:

(For the record, I’m not even sure if the pilots in that film were supposed to be Air Force; I didn’t see the film. My point should be clear, regardless.)

  10. rainlion says:

Pedro… you miss the point – and manage to pull some rather deft logical gymnastics by convoluting the lack of realism into something politically motivated.

There are drill instructors (marines mostly, but a few navy as well at the academy).

Guess you thought “Black Hawk Down” was an accurate representation of the Rangers?

    LOL

  11. rainlion says:

BD – the pilots and planes in Stealth were part of the “Pacific Fleet”

  12. drpedro says:

I made no point about the film. I made a point that the lefties who claim so much kinship with the troops know virtually nothing about the military. Not that this seems to keep you from commenting on it however.

Of course there are drill instructors and in fact, drill sergeant at the academy. I was trained by a USMC Master Gunnery Sergeant while in the Navy.

Unfortunately the lefties here miss the point on a regular basis, and this is no exception.

  13. BD says:

pedro, as I see it, your point was that Oliver’s lack of understanding about the inner workings of the military makes him and all other “lefties” suspect when they claim to support the troops.

So I have to presume that if you like music, you know how to write a song, how to perform it, how to record it, how to market it, and possibly how to remix it.

No? Then you must not really like music.

  14. Dkelsmith says:

    Pedro,

You really don’t like Oliver do you? When he makes a non-political post about a movie, you jump all over it. Bottom line, I don’t really know that much about the Naval rank structure, and I am sure that I don’t know the names of many offices. Does that make me stupid? I’m a “lefty” as you put it, but I do know about the military. There are all sorts of things to debate about, but you are making a burro out of yourself trying to press this point.

  15. drpedro says:

You know Dkel, I actually DO like OW. The problem is, I hate hypocrisy. I hate it when guys like OW wave a flag and explain how they are “supporting the troops” when it suits them, but the rest of the time ignore them.

I don’t know if you were active during the Clinton years, but it was an abysmal time to be in the military, exactly because of that hypocrisy.

OW throws down so much imaginary tripe here, making assumptions that simply aren’t supported in fact.

But again, I think my point is better made pointing out his ignorance during a non-political post because it demonstrates the lack of knowledge on a subject that he likes to give his opinion on.

I also hope that you know enough about Naval rank structure to recognize that there are no sergeants in it. I know I made an effort to learn the rest of the services structure. It was a sign of respect, and part of my officer’s training, I have to assume the Army does the same….Hoo-ahh?

  16. Frank_D says:

While DrP may be overstating things, it is generally true that liberals are woefully ignorant about the Armed Forces. This shouldn’t surprise any one: The left doesn’t like the military, never met a Military Appropriations they agreed with, they’re the first to label the military as “bad guys” (see Abu Ghraib and Gitmo), and the first to complain about their performance (see Rep. Jack “Sgt. Fury” Murphy).
Yet they expound on counterterrorist tactics, positing that a regular Army can’t beat a guerrilla force, when it has happened before in American history, once in British history, and doesn’t include the defeat of the “undefeatable” Afghanistan.

They pretend to knpw why we “lost” in Viet Nam, when we didn’t.

I could go on and on, but it suffices to conclude that where the Liberals vaunted educated views fail mightily is in the area of the Armed Forces. They know very, very little, but they never stop talking.

Well said, and my point exactly…..
