Bob Ehrlich, who’s politicization of Maryland government is already under investigation for dirty tricks has hired one of the GOP’s hit men.
Gov. Robert Ehrlich has hired a political director for his re-election campaign known for helping unseat a former Georgia senator and crusading war veteran four years ago.
Democrats in Maryland and Georgia criticized the hire of Bo Harmon, who managed Saxby Chambliss’ 2002 campaign against then-Sen. Max Cleland. They say he attacked the patriotism of Cleland, an Army veteran who lost three limbs in Vietnam.
“Bo Harmon ran one of the most despicable campaigns in the history of Georgia, if not the nation,” Georgia Democratic Party Chairman Bobby Kahn said in a statement. “Senator Chambliss’ campaign was the worst example of the politics of personal destruction, defaming the character of a man who gave up so much for his country in Vietnam.”
Expect for Ehrlich to try and salvage himself with smears early and often.
Yes, Bobby Kahn the old ‘brawler’ in a bloody knuckle world’ - so described by the uber liberal AJC. Chambliss beat Max even up. Max decided to cast his lot with Daschle and try to protect union influence in a procedural vote re homeland security. For some strange reasons Georgians didn’t like that. Zig Zag, his fellow Dem., warned him against it, but Max listened to the left. He forgot he was from Ga. and lost. Since then it’s been sad to see him become a pawn of the Democratic power tructure - somewhat verifying the judgement of the people of Ga.

Too bad the Bush Administration deliberately installed the union-busting plank to screw over Southern Democrats. Cleland was too principled to sell out to the union-busters. Oh, and I thought Republicans hated the Homeland Security Department. Or was that before they were for it?
The real reason he lost was because of the Confederate flag issue, which propelled Sonny Perdue to the Governor’s mansion in the same vote. The increase in white trash rural Republican votes for Perdue translated quite easily to votes for Chambliss. Without the flag issue, Roy Barnes would still be governor and Cleland would be Senator.
The people of Georgia chose their Senator on the basis of union issues?
Sounds like folks have changed their ways quite a bit since I last visited.
Elrod,
Sorry Cleland was the opposite of principled. He ran as a conservative blue dog Democrat but then turned against those who elected him. Max did what he did at his own risk. And it had almost nothing to do with the flag. The governor’s race did. The senatorial race didn’t. Georgia is very patriotic and responded very strongly against 9-11. Max Cleland casting a procedural vote to please his Party, but one against Homeland Security was idiotic and unprincipled and very unpopular in Ga. His democratic senator partner knew better. Max has himself to blame, no one else. Gonna run for statewide office in Ga., don’t mess around with national security.

If Georgia is so patriotic, why do they still fly the rebel flag? To what country do Georgians have their loyalties?
“Erlich Goes Smear Early”
Just picking nits, but that stands in direct contrast to your last sentence which indicates that you expect him to utilize smears.
factcheck,
Actually it isn’t the rebel flag. The flag was a popular issue in rural Ga. with Republicans and old style Dem.s. But it has receded. In fact many rural Georgians are upset with Gov Perdue for not , in their eyes, making a bigger deal out of the old flag. They feel a little betrayed.
As a conservative Ga., I don’t care for that flag and hope Gov Perdue continues to put it behind him.

Dugger, I trust that Perdue has put the rebel flag issue behind him, at least until the next election, in case he needs to motivate Jim-Bob and Jethrine to go to the polls.
Go easy on Jethrine. If I catch her, she’s mine.
