House Republicans reject Democratic resolution on corruption
House Republicans, in a party-line vote, rejected a Democratic-sponsored resolution Thursday denouncing a “culture of corruption exhibited by the Republican leadership.”
The resolution, introduced by Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California, would have specifically condemned the GOP majority’s practice of holding open close votes until wavering Republicans can be won over, sometimes with favors or threats.
Well, considering the bill specifically cited the Republican leadership’s corruption, is it surprising that Republicans would vote against it?
Yeah, my thought exactly. If you’re going to grandstand, then there had better be a reason for it, a point you’re trying to make, or something you’re trying to accomplish. There was nothing behind this crap but snark.
I think the number of Republicans and party operatives/cronies facing investigation and/or prosecution is a pretty clear indicator of the level of Republican corruption in Washington. Pelosi should know better than to waste more time on this kind of thing.
I’m sure that if the Republicans had proposed such a resolution after the House Bank scandal, the Democrats would have soundly rejected it, too.
Pelosi is also an odd choice to sponsor this kind of resolution, since it was recently reported that two PACS tied to her (the same way that Texans for a Republican Majority was tied to Tom Delay) paid $21,000 in fines for circumventing donation limits set in election law. This is kind of like Dick Gephardt grandstanding about Newt Gingrich’s “ethics violations” 8 years ago, when he himself was under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for income tax evasion.
It looks to me like this is a good chance for Democrats to practice their patented compassionate Christianity and start living out Jesus’ teaching about throwing the first stone.
Democrats to practice their patented compassionate Christianity
Ummm, not to burst your bubble, but I believe it’s the Republicans who have been trying to claim ownership of that particular meme.
Voting against a bill that was there to make them look like asses .. gee, what a surprise. Democrats are the minority, and after five years I still don’t think they’ve read the memo.
