Con Attack?

Professor beaten; attackers cite KU creationism class

A professor whose planned course on creationism and intelligent design was canceled after he sent e-mails deriding Christian conservatives was hospitalized Monday after what appeared to be a roadside beating.

University of Kansas religious studies professor Paul Mirecki said that the two men who beat him made references to the class that was to be offered for the first time this spring.

Originally called “Special Topics in Religion: Intelligent Design, Creationism and other Religious Mythologies,” the course was canceled last week at Mirecki’s request.

The class was added after the Kansas State Board of Education decided to include more criticism of evolution in science standards for elementary and secondary students.

“I didn’t know them,” Mirecki said of his assailants, “but I’m sure they knew me.”

The modern conservative movement is just one beat removed from the right-wing militias, here’s more evidence.

I would say that is a huge stretch Oliver. I am a liberal, but I would have to say that people in the modern conservative movement would not generally resort to violence. Nor would any “sane” person regardless of their political ideology.

  2. I don’t agree. [Background] You may also remember G. Gordon Liddy advocating the murder of federal agents.

Don’t these guys qualify as domestic terrorists under the Patriot Act? They used physical violence against somebody for political purposes.

So you admit that violence done in the name of a political ideology represents evidence that those in the mainstream of that particular ideology are “one beat removed” from the violent fringe?

    Hey, Smith.

You at home or in the field? If the latter, anything you need from home?

  6. JWG: this is the republican mainstream, it isn’t the fringe.

    Thugs. They are thugs.

In the 60’s and early 70’s, it was the lefties who were throwing rocks, blowing shit up, beating people up, and generally wreaking this kind of violent mayhem. In the late 70’s we all mellowed out and got into meditation and shit, I don’t know what. I’ve only seen a few blac block anarchists at protests, and they seem to limit themselves to smashing Starbucks windows. They do tend to be on the receiving end of a lot of brutal beatings though– from police.

Since the 70’s, it’s been the wingnuts who’ve been leading the violent charge– actually beating up and/or killing people. McVeigh was no liberal. Neither are the abortion clinic bombers, the guy who sent Anthrax to Daschle’s office, and these creationist clowns.

“Ever notice that people who believe in Creationism look really un-evolved? Eyes close together, big eyebrow across the top? ‘I believe god created me in one day!’. Yeah, looks like he rushed it.” — Bill Hicks, RIP

Currently at home…sort of….I’m TDY right now, but CONUS happily enough, I will be back on the clock around February time frame.

  9. JD says:

So, Oliver, is this “one beat removed” from the Republican mainstream, or “this is the republican mainstream” ? Either way, you are full of it, but I suppose spewing this garbage enables you to somehow feel better about yourself.

  10. JWG says:

Unfortunately for everyone, a large portion of democrats hold a creationist view as well. Just becasue they’re creationist thugs doesn’t mean they’re republican. Do we have any evidence of their political ideology?

  11. JD says:

Dkelsmith : Glad you are CONUS, and more importantly, that you are well. You honor everybody with your service. I am proud of you and everybody else that gives such a service to our country. When I left for the first Gulf War, my father told me to keep my head down, and my chin held high.

I really don’t care how OW spins it etc…at the end of the day it was a stupid and horrible act and I hope they find the cowards and toss them in a hole for 5-10.

  13. Quaker in a Basement says:

    Smith,

    OK. Thank you. Stay safe.

Check in with us once in a while so we know you’re allright.

“Do we have any evidence of their political ideology?”

Since when does Oliver need any evidence to make sweeping accusations and blanket generalizations?

A Republican State senator condemned the attack but I’ll bet she’s just in the “violent mainstream” too…

They also do reside in one of the most notoriously red states in the union. And the professor sent out emails deriding “Christian conservatives” as noted above. While there may not be concrete evidence (not sure if they were wearing Bush/Cheney 2004 shirts at the time of the beating), I think we can make a pretty safe assumption.

A Republican State senator condemned the attack but I ll bet she s just in the violent mainstream too&

Wowee! One state senator huh? Come to think of it, i believe my county freeholders condemned the attack as well.

  16. Dugger says:

Well, count me as one who doubts it ever happened. This guy is something of a hot head loose cannon and the details of the attack just fit to well. thre have been plenty of faked hate crimes. This has that same smell. I refuse to believe until I see more, much more.

I’m trying to imagine two guys in suits and ties — you know, “Republican types” — beating up on a college professor:

“Trying to say Genesis is a myth, eh?” ::Pow!::

“You say you don’t believe in Intelligent design? Take that! ::Bif::!

“What’s wrong with creationism, professor?” ::Ker – Blam!::

    Nah, I don’t think so…
