Personally, I think this whole “Republicans are racists” thing is code to Afro – Americans: “Stick with us Democrats, we know what’s best for you. How are you going to get by in life if we don’t take care of you?”

Remember Nixon’s Southern Strategy? That was how the party of wealthy Northerners managed to take in the Dixiecrats, and eventually many working- and middle-class whites all over the country.

The reason so few blacks vote Republican isn’t because Democrats somehow manage to fool them. Contrary to what seem to imply, Frank, most blacks aren’t ignorant children looking for a government nanny. However, most blacks likely have an understanding that the party of erstwhile Dixiecrats, the party of Strom Thurmond and Jesse Helms, isn’t exactly looking to give them their tax dollars’ worth. Any doubts about that should have been erased by the ‘response’ to Hurricane Katrina.

That is the relevance of the original post: no one believes that all Republicans are racists, but an open and unapologetic racist (like Helms, Thurmond, and apparently Allen) can hold high office as a Republican, and even seriously consider running for President. That says more about the Republicans and their constituency than any perceived condescenion toward blacks might say about the Democrats.

Oh, and by the way, that’s why Giuliani doesn’t stand a chance. He’s far too urbane and >ahemethnic, among other things, for the heartlanders in flyover country to take him seriously. Why do you think the Kennebunkport draft-dodging trust fund baby set up a dude ranch in the middle of Texas? His handlers knew he had to have weedbender cred for him to sell in the red states. It worked like a charm; is it still condescension when it works that well?

Sphagnum is correct; the polls you see now are largely about name recognition. When campaigning begins in earnest, Giuliani will be a non-factor especially when the Southern ignoramuses find out he’s pro-choice and pro-gay. Then you’ll hear about how he elevated the very criminal Bernie Kerik to use his job as NYPD Commissioner to extort money. And the affairs–especially with the one who was on city payroll.

Ian, I have never seen Oliver say a bad thing about white people. Accusing someone of rascism is not rascism. Pointing out that someone has a rascist symbol (yes, the “rebel” flag is a rascist symbol just like the Nazi flag is) in his office is not rascism. Yes, George Allen has every right to display a confederate flag in his house. And we have every right to call him on it and ask why he has a noose and confederate flag on display in his home and office.
And not every white person votes Republican. By the use of code words like “welfare queen” and trying to reverse the gains made by the civil rights movement, they have won the votes of a certain crowd who think they are entitled to a certain position in society because of their skin color. Not every Republican is rascist, but when Trent Lott remembers the “good old days” of Jim Crow, you have to ask, WTF?

Guiliani will never get the GOP nod, and if he did he’d lose because Conservatives would stay home. Allen will emerge as a very serious candidate because of his strong Conservative principles and experience both as Senator and Governor. He’s a strong candidate, even if he isn’t widly known now.
